ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY MASS MEDIA 4321 SPRING 2018 Instructor: Tina Doyle Office: LB319 email: Tina.Doyle@angelo.edu Phone: (325) 486-6079 Office Hours: Monday/Wednesday: Tuesday/Thursday: 8:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Textbook Required: A Short Course in Digital Photography, 3 rd edition; London & Stone Also Required: Appropriate memory card AND external storage device for photos Instruction manual for your camera Tripod/reflector/lens cleaning cloth Objectives: Students will become proficient in the use of digital SLRs and apply those skills in the production of quality digital images. An exhibit and a portfolio of work will demonstrate these capabilities. Students will also become cognizant of legal, ethical and archival issues related to digital imaging. Regular quizzes and assignments will reflect progress throughout the semester. In addition, an exhibit of student work will take place at the Coop Gallery on the evening of April 27. Students will be responsible for all exhibit aspects including publicity, set up and exhibit removal. Basic techniques of photography and digital imaging will be reviewed at the beginning of the semester. Photoshop will be used for image processing, and basic editing tools will be discussed. However, the software will be used as a tool rather than a crutch. Proper exposure, contrast, composition, etc. is expected in the original capture. A digital SLR camera with manual exposure and Camera Raw capture capability is required. Students who do not own this type of camera will be issued one for use during the semester. Studying the camera s instruction manual is essential. Additional equipment available for checkout from instructor: flashes and tripods (will fit all cameras). Attendance: For each absence after the third absence, one point will be deducted from the final grade. Two points will be added to the semester average for perfect attendance. If a class is missed, it is the student s responsibility to get the notes from a fellow student. Students must attend 75% of the scheduled classes to receive credit for the course; therefore, 8 or more absences will result in an automatic F for the semester. Approximately four quizzes will be administered during the semester and no make-up quizzes are allowed. Tardy: Being late three times equals one absence. You are tardy if you come into class after roll has been taken, and it is your responsibility to notify the instructor (after class) that you were present. Cell Phones: ANY cell phone use (ringing, texting, etc.) or other class disruption will result in a 10 point deduction from the next quiz or test grade. Repeat offenders will leave the classroom and be referred to the department head. Computer Use: The classroom computers are to be used during tutorials and during times designated for image editing. Monitors should be turned off except during these times. Ten points will be deducted from the next assignment for the first violation of this policy, 20 points for the second violation, and so on. Assignments: Unless otherwise specified, all assignments must be shot in the camera s Manual exposure mode. All photographic work must be produced by the student during the current semester. Students must use their personal camera or the camera checked out from the instructor for all assignments. Serial numbers of each camera is recorded in the instructor s office. Assignments are due in the designated folder 5 minutes before the beginning of class. Assignments turned in later than the specified time on the due date will have 10 points deducted. Late work will be dropped one letter grade for each class period that it is late. Assignments submitted more than 3 class days late will not be accepted and a grade of 0" will be recorded. Assignments turned in on time may be resubmitted for a higher grade, with a maximum of 20 points added to the original grade; i.e. an original grade of 60 can be resubmitted for a maximum grade of 80. A late assignment may not be resubmitted. Portfolio: The portfolio will consist of 8 prints, each at least 80 sq. inches in size (length x width), properly mounted and matted as outlined by the instructor. A CD of the images must be submitted for department files along with the prints. Specific content requirements TBA. Portfolio Due: Tuesday, May 1 at beginning of class. Portfolios will not be accepted late. Assignment Criteria and Due Dates: (Order and/or due dates may be altered if necessary or beneficial.) * Specific criteria will be outlined for each assignment by the instructor. * Unless otherwise noted, photos must be submitted in color (RGB). * All assignments are due in the assignment folder before class begins. Submission criteria: Unless otherwise specified, images must be captured in the camera s RAW format. Assignments must be saved to the appropriate folder on: J Drive Classroom Work Com, Mass Media Doyle Spring 2018 Adv4321. Assignment Grade Criteria 40% Meets assignment criteria (content, resolution, editing tools, etc.) 40% Technical quality (sharpness, exposure, contrast, depth of field, lighting, etc.) 20% Creativity 100% Grade Resubmitting an assignment: Any assignment that is turned in on time may be resubmitted for a higher grade within one week of the graded assignment s return. Maximum grade increase: 20 points. **To resubmit an assignment you must: 1. Save the new version of the assignment to the redo folder. 2. Return the original grade sheet to the instructor. Check your angelo.edu account for class updates and relevant information.

For each assignment: ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY/MM 4321 ASSIGNMENT LIST SPRING 2018 Create a contact sheet of photos shot for the assignment. You should have 20-40 shots per assignment. Choose the photo (or photos, depending on the assignment) that best meet assignment criteria. Save the original/unaltered file(s) in the appropriate assignment folder in the Classroom Work area of the J drive. Copy the original file(s). Make the necessary corrections and/or adjustments only on the copied file. Crop the adjusted photo to 8x10 ; minimum resolution 220ppi. Be sure the contact sheet, the original image file(s) and the modified file(s) are in the assignment folder. Check that the files can be opened. If a file cannot be opened, the assignment will be counted late. **Assignment order subject to change. Specific criteria will be outlined prior to each assignment: 1. Hit Me With Your Best Shot: (JPG; one photo). Your choice of subject. Best use of light, composition and depth of field. Due: Thursday, Feb. 1 2. Creative Control: (JPG; 5 photos of ONE subject) Use a wide aperture and a small aperture to vary the depth of field. Use a high, medium and low angle to show different perspectives of the subject. Due: Tuesday, Feb. 13 3. Low-Light/Night: (Camera Raw; one photo) Requires the use of a low ISO, a tripod and a slow shutter speed (less than 1/15 sec). Due: Thursday, Feb. 22 4. In Their Best Light: (Camera Raw; one photo) Portrait of a person, indoors or outdoors using low ISO. Due: Thursday, March 1 5. The Need for Speed: (Camera Raw) Use ISO of 1600-6400 in a dim lighting situation where a sharp photograph would not otherwise be possible, i.e. indoor or night athletic event. Due: Thursday, March 8 6. Scanography: (TIFF) Use the photo scanner in LB328 to create an image. Due: Tuesday, March 27 7. Studio Portrait: (Camera Raw) Use the studio and lighting equipment in LB 322 to photograph 1-2 people. Due: Thursday, April 12 8. TBA Due: Thursday, April 19 9-10. Coop Exhibit (2 grades): One grade for images exhibited; one grade for participation.
