Making the Small Squares Border Assemble the 3 ½" Lattice and Brown Tonal squares, alternating as shown (Diagram A). Make two rows of six squares for the side borders to measure 3 ½" x 18 ½". Make two rows of eight squares for the top and bottom borders to measure 3 ½" x 24 ½". Press as shown (Diagram B). (A) (B) (C) Adding the Small Squares Border Sew the sides to the center 18 ½" Medium Floral square, then the top and bottom rows. Orient the rows as shown so the blocks alternate around the center. Press as shown (Diagram C). The center with the first border should measure 24 ½" x 24 ½". (D) Adding the First Stripe Border Sew the two 2" x 24 ½" Stripe pieces to the top and bottom. Page 4 of 6 Making the Appliqué Blocks Appliqué: Trace the template eight times on the paper side of the lightweight fusible web. Cut apart the shapes leaving about ⅛" around the outside of the drawn line (Diagram E). (E) Tip: Cut out the inside of the fusible leaving about ½". This will minimize the stiffness. Fuse to the WRONG SIDE of the Small Floral according to the manufacturer s directions (Diagram F). Cut out each shape on the drawn line. Remove the paper. Position, on the right side, in the center, of each 9 ½" Brown Tonal square (Diagram G). NOTE: Design is not symmetrical, so make sure they are all turned the same direction. Fuse according to the manufacturer s directions. Stitch around each shape with coordinating thread and a small zigzag or buttonhole stitch. Make eight appliqué blocks. (F) (G) Make 8 Add the Appliqué Block Border (H) Assemble the 9 ½" Lattice squares and the appliqué blocks made in the previous step, alternating as shown (Diagram H). Make two rows of three squares for the side borders to measure 9 ½" x 27 ½". Press as shown. Make two rows of five squares for the top and bottom borders to measure 9 ½" x 45 ½" and press as shown. Sew the sides to the center, then the top and bottom rows. Press as shown. Orient the rows as shown so the blocks alternate around the center (Diagram I). The final measurement of the center with the appliqué border should be 45 ½" square. ( I)
Adding the Second Stripe Border Page 5 of 6 Sew the 3 ½" Stripe pieces together to make two 45 ½" long, and two 51 ½" long strips for the second Stripe border. Camouflage the seams in the stripes. Sew the two 3 ½" x 45 ½" strips to the sides. Sew the two 3 ½" x 51 ½" strips to the top and bottom. Press as shown (Diagram J). The top should now measure 51 ½" square. (J) Adding the Outside Border Sew the two 7 ½" x 51 ½" Large Floral strips to the sides. Sew the two 7 ½" x 65 ½" Large Floral strips to the top and bottom and press as shown (Diagram K). The completed top should now measure 65 ½" square. (K)
Backing Make the back by cutting the 4 yards into two 2 yard pieces. Trim the selvages, and sew together on the long sides. Press the seam open. Press the quilt top and backing well. Layer backing (wrong side up), batting, pressed quilt top (right side up), and baste. Quilt as desired and trim excess batting and backing when quilting is complete. Binding Finishing Cut the ends of the binding strips at a 45-degree angle and sew end to end to make one continuous piece of binding. Fold in half lengthwise and press wrong sides together. Sew the binding to the front of the quilt, raw edges together. Turn the folded edge to the back, and hand stitch in place. Page 6 of 6 2011 Studio e Fabrics
