2 Part 1. Calculating Your Pump Depth, Preparation and of a New Well Seal to Accommodate The Of A Handy Well Pump. All Models. TOOLS AND SUPPLIES NEEDED FOR CHANGING THE WELL SEAL. A 3/16" drill. Enough 1/8" nylon or poly rope to run the length of your installation plus a few feet. Tools to safely remove the water and electrical lines from your existing well pump. 1. Determine Your Water Level. You have probably already determined the static water level in your well. If not, it needs to be known before you continue. To determine your water level you will first need to remove your existing well seal. Read the procedure for removing a well seal below. Then tie a threaded nut onto a long length of string such as a fishing line. Then attach something buoyant to the string about an inch above the nut such as a fishing bobber. Slowly lower the weighted string into the well taking care not to snag on any existing components. When you reach the water level the string will go slack. Mark the string at the top of the well casing and pull it out of the well in a straight line. Measure the distance between the weight and the mark on the string. This is your static water level. 2. Calculate Your Handy Well Pump Depth To determine The Extensions Needed. A good installation will have the Handy Well Pump 15' to 20' below the surface of the water. In some cases this won't be possible because the static level of the water is closer than that to the bottom of the well. The Handy Well Pump will work in as little as 5' of water but it will have a reduced output. When determining the depth of your hand pump, incorporate the length of the pump assembly into the calculation. This will keep you from bottoming the hand pump in the well. It is important to keep the hand pump off the bottom to keep it from pulling sand and other particles into the pump assembly. If you do pull sand into the pump you will have to disassemble it and clean it, so take care not to hit the bottom of the well with it. Also, you want to keep the hand pump several feet above the level of your electric submersible pump or jet pump assembly. Common Depth Example To Calculate Needed Extensions. For example purposes your well depth is 120'. Your static water level is 65'. The Handy Well Pump would sit at around 85'. You would need 78' to 83' of extensions. 80' would work just fine in this installation. You can do a glue together installation and purchase your own pipe or you can purchase ready made extension sets from us. 3. Determining And Installing Your Well Seal. Measure your well casing on the inside diameter. Common well seal sizes are 2", 3", 4", 5", 6" and 8". Casings can vary in size from ¼" under to ¼" over. Our standard size seals will fit these dimensions. Make sure that you have the correct well seal that will accommodate the Handy Well Pump along with your existing pump. The Handy Well Pump will fit in well casings from 2" in diameter and larger. It will fit alongside an existing electric pump in most wells that are 4" in diameter and larger and even some 3" casings. a. Warm And Moderate Climate s alongside an existing pump. In warm and moderate climates, electric well pumps are installed with the water line and electrical line exiting the top of the well. In most residential installations the existing electric pump water line will be of 1" PVC or Galvanized pipe. (Note: Water lines are measured from the inside diameter and marked on the outside as to the correct dimension. This can be deceiving when calculating pipe sizes). Our 4" and larger two hole well seals are built to accommodate this setup. Occasionally the existing water line will be 1 ¼ " (Inside Diameter) and the seal will need to be drilled out to accommodate the larger water line. Procedure For Removing and Installing a Well Seal For Pump Alongside An Existing Pump. **Please have this part done by a qualified service person**. For a well without another pump use a single hole well seal. 1. Turn of the electrical circuit to the pump. 2. Ready the existing seal to be removed by cutting the water line and disconnecting the electrical. The process will vary depending on your setup. 3. Carefully remove the old well seal and prepare the new well seal for installation. 4. Drill a 3/16" hole in the top of the well seal between two of the bolts for the safety rope. 5. Feed the rope through the hole from the top down and then bring the rope end up through the hole for the hand pump with a few feet extra rope coming out the top of the well seal. 7. Feed the existing water line through the smaller hole in the seal and the electrical line through the threaded hole with a cap while lowering the new well seal into position snuggly within the well casing. Do Not tighten the bolts on the well seal at this time.. 2
3 Part 1 Continued b. Cold Climate Wells in colder climates are set up with a pitless adapter on the inside of the casing several feet below the surface where the water line exits the well casing. The existing well seal does not have any pipes coming out the top. There will be an electrical line coming up the outside of the well casing and entering the inside of the casing under a protrusion on the well cap. Once the well cap is removed from the casing you can determine how to proceed. Some models of pitless adapters have a support bracket that sits on the top of the casing. In this situation you will need to completely remove the existing well cap framework and install a coupling that is the same size as your well casing in order to get some distance between the pitless adapter support rod and the top of the well. Also you need to be sure that you have a minimum of 1.66" between the casing wall and the body of the pitless adapter that is located several feet down the well. The widest point on the pump assembly is 1.66". The easiest way to determine if the pump will fit is to lower a length of 1- ¼" PVC pipe down between the casing and the pitless adapter. If the pipe fits past the pitless adapter then the pump will fit without having to remove the pitless adapter. If there is less than 1.66" (1 ¼ " pipe diameter) but more than 1.32" (1" pipe diameter) of room then you can install the pump, but the pitless adapter will have to be lifted up while the hand pump is installed and then reinstall the pitless adapter. Pitless Adapters that don't have a support bracket that sits on the top of the well casing are easier to deal with in most cases. Remove the well cap framework and replace it with one of our two hole well seals. The larger hole will be for the hand pump and the smaller hole will be for the electrical. Follow the same steps for setting up the safety rope. Don't tighten the well seal bolts. This will be done after the installation of the hand pump. Make sure that the hand pump opening is over an open area without obstructions. Part 2. Installing The Pump Assembly And Extensions. All Models. Tools and Supplies Needed. 2 pair of locking pliers, ¼ drill bit, 1/32" drill bit, adjustable open end wrench, Teflon tape (Use on all threaded fittings). (PVC cement, ½" schedule 40 PVC pipe and 1" schedule 20 PVC pipe if using Option A.) Step 1. Preparing and Installing The Pump, Riser Pipe and Extension Pipe. OPTION A. Using The Included Threaded Adapter Fitting Set. The included Threaded Adapter Fitting Set will allow you to install your pump by you purchasing 20' lengths of ½" schedule 40 PVC pipe and 20' lengths of 1" schedule 20 PVC pipe equal to the depth of your installation from your local hardware store. 20' lengths of PVC pipe come with bell fittings on one end. These will be used to connect the pipes together. Alternately you can substitute 10' lengths of pipe and purchase glue on couplings for both the ½" pipe and the 1" pipe if you want shorter lengths to work with. Be certain that the 1" couplings will fit through the opening in the well seal and that the ½" couplings will fit inside the 1" schedule 20 pipe. 1. Glue the supplied ½" Male Adapter to one of the locally purchased ½" pipes and glue the supplied 1" Female Adapter to one of the locally purchased 1" class 200 pipes. These will then thread onto the pump assembly. 2. Securely thread the ½" Male Adapter with the ½" pipe attached to it to the ½" stainless steel female coupling on The Pump Assembly. 3. Securely thread the supplied 1" Female Adapter with the 1" pipe attached to it by sliding it over the ½" pipe and threading the 1" female fitting to the 1" male fitting on The Pump Assembly. 4. Tie the safety rope securely between the foot valve at the bottom of The Pump Assembly and the bottom of the cylinder on The Pump Assembly. 5. Lower The Pump Assembly and the extension assembly into the well through the hole in the well seal while feeding the safety rope through the drilled hole in the well seal. Use the supplied Support Bracket to safely support the assembly at the fitting end of the 1" pipe. 6. Glue the subsequent pipes together connecting the ½" pipe first and then sliding the 1" pipe over the top. A second person or support structure may be needed to keep the 20' lengths of pipe vertical. 7. Before installing the last section of ½" pipe, shorten it by 25 ½" and glue the white fitting end of the supplied 24" Riser Adjustment Piece to the upper end of the ½"pipe and then glue the entire ½" pipe to the one exiting the well. 8. Install the last length of 1" pipe over the ½" riser pipe. The distance between the top of the 1" pipe and the top of the ½" stainless steel coupling should be 1- ½ to 2 ". 9. Before gluing the 1" male adapter onto the 1" pipe you need to measure the distance between the top of the 1" pipe and the top of the coupling on the 24" riser adjustment piece. The top of the stainless steel coupling on the 24" riser adjustment piece should be about 2" longer than the top of the 1" pipe. ½" one way or the other won't hurt your pump's performance. 10. Next, remove the ½" stainless steel coupling from the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece and slide the 1" male adapter fitting onto the 1" pipe and glue it in place. 11. Thread the ½" stainless steel coupling back onto the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece. Proceed to Step 2. Drilling The Weep Holes. 3
4 Part 2. Continued OPTION B. Threaded Extension Set. (optional). If you purchased our Threaded Extension Set(s) then the extension pipes and schedule 80 riser pipes are already built to the correct lengths. Make sure you have purchased enough for your project before you start. 1. Locate the supplied bag of stainless steel couplings. 2. Thread the first 4' long gray riser pipe to the stainless steel coupling on The Pump Assembly. 3. Thread the first 1" extension piece onto the male fitting on The Pump Assembly. 4. Thread a stainless steel couping onto the gray 1/2" riser pipe. 5. Lower The Pump Assembly and the extension assembly into the well through the hole in the well seal while feeding the safety rope through the drilled hole in the well seal. Use the supplied Support Bracket to safely support the assembly at the fitting on the top of the 1" pipe. 6. Repeat steps 2, 3, 4, and 5 until you have reached your needed pump depth. 7. Once your last extension is resting in the Support Bracket, measure the distance from the top of the 1" male fitting and the top of the ½" stainless steel fitting. There should be approximately 2".This next step will take care of any variations and get you to the needed 2" difference using the provided 24" Riser Adjustment Piece. 8. If your distance between the top of the stainless steel coupling and the top of the 1" male threaded fitting is NOT 2"draw a short line with a marking pen where the ½" gray pipe intersects the top of the fitting on the 1" pipe. 9. Lift the pump and extension assembly up to the next joint and secure it in the well seal with the Support Bracket. 10. Remove the stainless steel coupling and disconnect the 1" extension from the one below it. 11. With the stainless steel coupling still threaded onto the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece make a line with your marking pen 2" down from the top of the stainless steel coupling. 12. Undo the white coupling from the bottom of the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece. 13. Hold the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece against the side of the ½" gray riser pipe that is exiting the well seal and line up the lines on both pieces previously made with your marking pen. Make a line at the bottom of the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece onto the gray riser pipe. 14. Cut the gray riser pipe at the marked line and glue the white coupling onto the cut gray pipe. 15. Thread the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece into the top of the white coupling. 16. Remove the stainless steel coupling from the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece and install the 1" extension piece over the 24" Riser Adjustment Piece and reinstall the stainless steel coupling. 17. Lower the adjusted riser and extension piece back down through the opening in the well seal and let it rest in the Support Bracket. Proceed to Step 2. Drilling The Weep Holes. Step 2. Drill The Weep Holes. (This is important no matter what your climate) A. Depending on your location, the depth of the weep holes in the outer extension pipe will change. These holes are dependent on your freeze depth. This is because the pump will automatically drain down to the weep hole height since the outer extension pipe is full of water. This is inherent in the pump design. You may have to raise the pipe up to access the right location if you live in a cold climate. In some Northern States they will need to be 5' to 6' below the surface. In warmer climates 1' is suitable. The weep holes also serve to drain off excess water that may be in the pipe during the pumping operation and keep water in the extension pipe from coming to the top of the pump while using it. B. Drill two ¼ holes at 180 degrees from each other on the 1" extension pipe at the appropriate depth for your climate. Take care not to drill too far and puncture the inner riser pipe. The pump will not operate if you do. C. If you live in a cold climate you may need a small weep hole in the inner riser pipe as well. Drill one 1/32" hole in the inner riser pipe at the same depth as the outer extension pipe. This can be done by drilling through a ¼" weep hole into the riser pipe with a 1/32" bit. 3. Prepare To Install The Head Assembly. At this point you should have the top of the final extension set resting above the top of your well seal held in place by the Safety Bracket. Before attaching the head assembly, mix a cup full of vinegar in a couple of gallons of water and pour it down the extension pipe. This will serve to both clean and prime the pump when you start operating it. Alternately you can use ¼ cup of liquid bleach in the same amount of water. Be sure to let it gas off for 24 hours as it can be toxic to breathe. Proceed to Part 3. Installing The Head Assembly And Operating The Pump. All Models 4
