BIRD FEEDER Page 5
Overview This easy bird feeder is fun to customize! And it s a good deed to feed songbirds, especially in winter when they can lose one third of their bodyweight in a single cold night! 1. Measure and mark Start your bird feeder by measuring and marking lumber according to the supplies list on Page 3. Use a rafter square to extend each mark into a nice straight line, which will be your cutting guide. 2. Cut The world's easiest hand saw is a Japanese-style pull saw. It cuts on the pull stroke, so it never binds or bends. Kids can easily cut wood if they keep one hand behind their back so they can't possibly hurt themselves. 3. Sand Sand the freshly-cut edges using some sandpaper stapled to a board. Page 6
4. Mark Next, use a rafter square to make diagonal lines where we'll cut the roof line of our bird feeder. TIP Your roof line should look like this! 5. Clamp and cut Clamp the board to your work surface and saw along the diagonal angles. (Don't forget to cut a second board for the opposite wall of the house!) 6. Layout Time to start assembling! Lay out the pieces and start marking the boards where you want to add screws. Page 7
7. Drill Drill pilot holes through each of your marks using a 1/8-inch [3 mm] drill bit. 8. Countersink After drilling the pilot holes, use a countersink bit to carve a shallow hole for the head of the screw so it doesn't stick out or split the wood. 9. Fasten Kids can drive screws using a small cordless drill. Use a pulsing motion to better control speed and aim. TIP You'll notice that one of the walls seems too short - that's because we've allowed a gap at the bottom for the seeds to spill out with the help of gravity. Page 8
10. Fasten Finish pre-drilling and fastening all four walls. 11. Assemble Now put the roof together! Once again, drill pilot holes and countersink holes before driving the screws. 12. Add platform The last step in construction is to attach a bottom platform that the birds will perch on to eat their seeds. 13. Paint Now add some colour to fancy the place up a bit! Page 9
14. Squeeze After you're done painting, it's time to add some landscaping. Start with some blobs of gap-filling adhesive to make a path around the house. 15. Lay a path Add chips of mulch (custom-painted!) or gravel pressed into the adhesive to make a border around the edge of the feeding platform. TIP You can either paint the roof or spread on a coat of gap-filling adhesive and sprinkle glitter all over it. 16. Drill and string Next, drill holes in the gables and pass a piece of parachute cord through so you can hang your bird feeder. Page 10
17. Drill Next, drill a tiny hole in the roof for an eye-hook. Use the smallest drill bit you have. 18. Install Twist the eye-hook to the right until it won't go any deeper. (Don't forget to add an eye-hook to the opposite side of the roof too!) 19. String Feed the parachute cord through the eye hook. TIP Parachute cord tends to fray, so seal the fibres with the flame from a match or lighter. Page 11
20. Fill Lift the roof off to one side and fill the hopper with high-quality bird food like black oil sunflower seeds. Hang your feeder outdoors and wait for the songbirds to thank you with their singing! Alternate design #1 - We glued cut-off wood triangles to the bird feeder and added a tin roof (made with lightweight aluminum flashing from the roofing aisle at Lowe s) that we embossed with an old ballpoint pen that didn t work anymore. For a border to enclose the seeds we plunked pea gravel into a bed of gap-filling adhesive. Alternate design #2 - On this model we added some perches and a round hole (made with an electric jigsaw) so the birds would have additional places to feed. Page 12
