Somehow, BOYT & Woodlot magazine, will be presenting seminars on lumber grading, we will squeeze 19 firewood processors and 5 splitters into the Shoot-Out arena. While space will be tight, the supply of wood won t be. To make sure everyone has plenty of wood to split, we are doubling the log order to 100 tons! Even the splitters will have bigger piles to work through. For some, all this means is pushing a lever a few more times and letting the machine do the work. For others, it will involve more grunt work. But for everyone, it means a bigger pile of wood at the end of the event. Whether you ve seen a Firewood Shoot-Out before or this is your first one, there will be plenty of action. Of course, many familiar machines Automated Biomass Systems, Cord King, Bell s, Brute Force, Dyna, Multitek, and Wood Beaver will be showing off their capabilities. This year, we re bringing in machines from Blockbuster, Japa, Firewood Automation, Eastonmade s new Ultra splitter, Hakki Pilke, as well as a new machine from Tajfun. For those of us preparing for the event, it means more planning as well as more work on the ground. We will be sorting through twice as much wood to make sure everyone gets a fair share, marking out the area to give everyone just enough room to work safely without wasting a square inch of space, and moving the machines and logs into exactly the right place at the right time. It also means more firewood to auction off on Sunday, with proceeds going to charity. Be sure to bring a big trailer if you want a good deal on a lot of firewood! Meanwhile, up on the hill behind the grand- milling techniques, drying wood, and burning wood for heat. There is a fee to attend each of Brian s seminars and they are always filled to capacity, so be sure to register at If all this isn t enough to bring you to Cambridge, Ohio, remember that the Great Firewood Shoot-Out and seminars are only part of the huge Paul Bunyan Show. Manufacturers and distributors from around the world bring in equipment for forestry, logging, sawmilling, and firewood processing. The show will have its own seminars on logging safety and chain saw carving demonstrations. And all that noise coming from the west side of the infield is the Stihl Timbersports competition where lumberjacks compete in chopping, bucksawing, and unlimited class chain saws. And this will be your one chance to get a famous Bunyan Burger don t plan on a big dinner if you have one of these for lunch! With all the planning and organizing, there is always one wildcard the Ohio weather in October always throws in an interesting variable. In the past, we ve had rain, snow, and near 100 temperatures, so come prepared for the worst, and hope for the best! 2 AUTOMATED BIOMASS SYSTEMS AUTOSPLIT Automated Biomass Systems s AutoSplit firewood splitter will be easy to spot at this year s Firewood Shoot-Out. Using a box wedge that makes three, four, or five sticks of wood at a time, the machine shuttles the piece of wood though the wedges and then back for the next split. This splits the logs into uniform blocks without having to handle the wood for re-splitting. Designer Matt Timmins says that he came up with the concept after running a commercial firewood business for several years, but found the split pieces were too big for many of his customers. The AutoSplit uses a 20-hp Honda GX 630, and has a cycle time of 5 seconds slightly longer, if the 2- stage pump kicks in for tough knots and forks. The splitter comes standard with a log lifter capable of lifting up to 500 pounds and allowing the operator to stage several logs at a time. In addition to the splitter, Timmins will demonstrate the AutoFine bark and debris remover and a 12-foot conveyor. The AutoSplit is targeted for commercial firewood producers, but Matt noted that many are sold for residential applications. They are built in Marathon, New York, and carry a 1-year warranty. BELL S MACHINING, WELDING & HYDRAULICS BELL 4000 From the beginning, the Bell 4000 was designed to be rugged and easy to repair in the field. It proved to be so successful that Bell s Machining went on to develop and add five additional models and now offers six machines with the same rugged dependabilty. The 4000 uses a 44-inch circular blade to cut wood up to 20 inches in diameter. The 66-hp Cat diesel engine powers the hydraulics to run the cutoff saw, splitter, conveyor, and live deck. A single joystick controls all functions. The log feed automatically stops the log for the desired firewood length. The splitting cycle is automated. While the hydraulic cylinder is crushing the wood through the wedge, the operator advances the log and makes the next cut, so the machine is constantly cutting and splitting. A sliding shelf supports the firewood during cutting, and makes sure it falls consistently into the splitting chamber. Bell s Machining s exclusive single joystick control is user friendly, and the auto-cycle splitter allows simultaneous cutting and splitting. New this year is the log positioning feature that allows the operator to rotate crooked logs before cutting them. For towing, it includes standard tandem 7,000-pound-capacity axles with brakes and trailer lights to keep you safe and legal going down the road. Maximum log diameter is 23-1/2 inches and maximum log length is 30 feet. It features a 91-hp CAT diesel engine and can produce up to 4 full cord of hardwood per hour. 3 BLOCKBUSTER BLOCKBUSTER BLOCKBUSTER BLOCKBUSTER The Blockbuster is returning to the firewood Shoot-Out! According to Blockbuster, its 74-hp, 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is capable of producing 4+ cords of wood per hour. This machine has a 5-inch splitting cylinder that can split up to 24-inch-diameter logs into firewood lengths between 12 inches and 22 inches with a 4.5-second cycle time. Other standard features include a 3-strand hydraulic folding deck capable of loading 24-foot-plus log lengths and a choice of 4-, 6-, or 8-way splitting heads that are quickly interchangeable to accommodate different sizes of logs and customer requirements. The chain-driven log trough gives you continuous log access. A tip pan supports the firewood during the cut and releases it into the splitting trough when the hydraulic ram is in position for the next cycle. The cutoff saw is a hydraulic harvester chain saw with a 30-inch bar. Tandem axles and electric brakes are standard on this 5-ton machine. 4 BRUTE FORCE DISTRIBUTING HD According to Josh Szydel, owner of Brute Force, the Brute Force HD features rugged design and comes standard with a number of features that are options on other firewood processors. The machine uses a hydraulic-powered chain saw capable of cutting off logs up to 20 inches in diameter. To show it to its best advantage, the machine at the Shoot-Out will run with a 49-hp Kubota engine that gives the splitting ram a 5.2-second cycle time. Szydel also noted that the rounded chute design works well with the crooked logs commonly encountered in his home state of Wisconsin. Standard equipment for the Brute Force includes a 3-strand live deck that is raised and lowered hydraulically for easy loading, an integrated 14-foot hydraulic-operated chain stacking conveyor that swings 3 feet left and right, and joystick controls to operate the hydraulic saw, clamp, live deck, and log infeed conveyor. The HD firewood processor comes with a 4-way, hydraulically-adjustable wedge, with 6-, 8-, and 10-way wedges also available. The standard towing features include torsion suspension with electric brakes, and integrated tail lights. According to Szydel, the HD is designed with the commercial firewood producer in mind. BRUTE FORCE DISTRIBUTING HD Josh Szydel got his start in the wood fuel business building wood furnaces, and recently moved into the manufacture of firewood processors, as well. The company s largest firewood processor the Brute Force HD will make its first Shoot-Out run this year. This commercial firewood processor comes standard with a 56-HP Kohler turbo diesel engine. Using a piston hydraulic chain saw for cutoff, the machine can process logs up to 25-in. diameter. The standard 4-strand live deck can hold logs up to 24-feet long, and converts into a log lift for operations without loaders. The integrated 18-foot, hydraulic outfeed chain conveyor swings 3 feet left and right allowing you to easily load firewood into a trailer or truck box. Joystick controls operate the hydraulic saw, clamp, live deck, and log infeed conveyor. Standard features include a hydraulically operated 4-way wedge, electric bar oiler, and hydraulic oil cooler. Other standard features include last log measuring grid, integrated tail lights, and round log trough for better handling of crooked logs. The deck and chute fold in quickly, and the processor is DOT legal for highway towing. The HD carries a one-year manufacturer s warranty. BRUTE FORCE DISTRIBUTING For those looking for a no-nonsense hydraulic log splitter with plenty of power, the aptly named Brute Force is worth a closer look. Brute Force fitted a 20-hp electric-start Honda engine to a 2-stage, 28-GPM hydraulic pump to generate a 25-ton splitting force to break apart the toughest logs. The 24-inch ram makes the Brute Force a practical firewood splitter for woodstoves and fireplaces. The 4-way wedge is hydraulically adjustable to get the optimum split no matter how big the log is. A hydraulic log lift helps get the big ones in place and the heavy-duty sorting table has plenty of room to hold pieces that need to be re-split. 5 the wood through a 10-way or 12-way fixed splitting wedge, but for the big logs, it has optional 58- and 72-ton splitters and up to a 28- way wedge. Weighing in at 8 tons, and measuring 8 feet 6 inches wide, it is not as easy to move as the smaller processors, but once in place, Cord King rates the production at 8 to 9 cords per hour. This processor is designed for operator comfort, featuring an enclosed cab with sound isolation, heat, a comfortable seat, and shatterproof windows that provide a good view of the cutoff and splitting operations. As the hydraulic piston pushes the wood through the splitter, the operator can advance the log and cut the next piece. The splitting ram retracts just in time for the firewood bolt to fall into the splitting chamber. To take some of the workload off the operator, the machine has an automatic log stop, automatic clamping, and autocycle splitter that provides a cycle time of 3 seconds. Once the log length is set, the infeed automatically advances the log the correct distance, and, in about one second, the chop saw cuts the firewood bolt, which is forced through the splitting chamber with 29 tons of force behind the hydraulic ram that forces the wood through an 8-way splitting wedge in about 3.5 seconds. This is one machine to keep an eye on for those who are looking for a high-production machine. Cord King rates the at 6 cords per hour. The log-handling capacity of 20-inch diameter and 30-foot length, and the 29-ton splitting force give the machine the ability to process just about anything you can load on it. Transporting the 9,350-pound machine down the road to the worksite is relatively easy, since it is 8 feet wide and has a full towing package that includes a 2-5/16-inch ball hitch, tandem 10,000-pound axles, electric brakes, and running lights. 7 DYNA PRODUCTS DYNA SC14 T his will be Dyna s third Shoot-Out, and they are bringing back two of their firewood processors. According to company founder Nathan Miller, the SC14 uses a 34-hp Caterpillar diesel engine to run the pitch hydraulic chain saw cutoff and put 18,000 pounds of splitting force onto logs up to 16 inches in diameter and 22 inches long. The SC14 is rated to produce up to 3 cords per hour. According to Miller, there are a few refinements to the machine, including redesigned hydraulics for faster, smoother operation. The operator controls the processor with two joysticks and one splitter lever. The machine can achieve a 7-second-cycle splitting time and 5 seconds with the optional booster valve. The outfeed conveyor is an optional 12-foot or 14-foot conveyor. When it is time to move the machine, the optional conveyor and live deck fold up for compact storage and transport. The SC14 is designed to be user friendly and easily maneuvered in tight places, and takes about 10 minutes to set up. The 51-hp Cat diesel powers the wood through at a company-rated 3 cords per hour enough to keep several operators busy loading logs and stacking firewood. The hydraulic ram allows for up to 30-inch-long logs. The 4-way or 6-way wedges move up and down on a hydraulic piston to split different diameters of wood, up to 16 inches. Dyna has refined the hydraulics, giving the processor even faster cutting times and smoother operation than the one demonstrated two years ago. The processor has an extra-wide outfeed table so that large pieces can be returned to the splitter for resplitting. The SC16 offers an optional high-speed hydraulic piston motor for the saw, which has a 25-inch bar with a chain. The operator uses one lever to clamp the wood. It comes standard Options to be used...4-way, 6-way, box wedge with full auto cycle, log lift, and catch pan. The 25-gallon hydraulic tank with suction and return filters keeps the oil cool and clean. The Eastonmade log cradle design centers the log on the bed so it goes straight through the wedge (interchangeable between 2/4-way, 6-way, and box wedge). Wedge height is hydraulically adjustable and they can be changed out quickly without the use of tools. The log lifter can lift up to 500 pounds and serves as a loading deck/ sorting table. As a time-saver, the offers autocycle, which takes the hydraulic ram through the splitting and return with one input, allowing the operator to load or stack firewood while the splitter works. Receivers on each end of the splitter make it easy to tow in either direction, and highway-rated tires make getting the machine to the wood yard safe and easy. 8 EASTONMADE ULTRA The Ultra firewood splitter is Eastonmade s newest offering. Even though it is Eastonmade s smallest splitter, it is designed with the structure and the power to make multiple splits in the toughest logs. The Ultra comes standard with a 12-inch-tall wedge. With an 11-hp GX340 Honda engine, 2- stage pump, and a 3-inch-by-24-inch splitter cylinder with a 2-inch rod, this splitter has a fast 4-second cycle time for logs up to 2 feet long. As with its larger splitters, Eastonmade uses durable Galtech hydraulic components, replaceable wear surfaces, bushings in all pivots, and a rigid connection between the hydraulic ram and the splitting plate. For easy towing, the Ultra has hitch receivers on each end of the splitter. Highway-rated tires make getting the machine to the wood yard safe and easy. Eastonmade estimates a production rate of 1.5 cords per hour, but with the new optional 4-way wedge, this machine just might top that number at the Shoot-Out. FIREWOOD AUTOMATION SAMI MOBILE The Sami Mobile is a new machine to the Firewood Shoot-Out. It is imported from Finland by Firewood Automation of Irma, Wisconsin. Company owner Don Liebelt describes the Mobile as the most automated firewood processor available. In full automatic mode, it integrates with other components, such as the Autosorter to load, measure, saw, center the wedge, and split the wood with no operator input. For the Shoot-Out, however, Liebelt will demonstrate the machine in the portable configuration, which still performs everything automatically except for the log transfer from the live deck to the infeed conveyor. One operator can process 2 to 3 cords of firewood per hour. HAKKI PILKE HAKKI PILKE 38 PRO The Hakki Pilke 38 Pro is new both to the Shoot-Out and to Hakki Pilke. This midsize firewood processor is capable of handling up to 15-inch-diameter logs. Power is from a tractor HAKKI PILKE HAKKI PILKE 43 PRO Hakki Pilke is new to the Firewood Processor Shoot-Out this year, but the company has more than 30 years experience building firewood processors in Finland with 30,000 machines in operation around the world. The 43 Pro is compact and can be operated by the PTO power provided by a tractor, an independent PTO Powerpack, or direct-drive gas engine. This full-production machine features a 125-hp John Deere engine to cut and split logs up to 23 inches in diameter and 40 feet long. As you watch it in action at the Shoot-Out, look for this machine s unique shuttle grapple infeed system. Designed for crooked wood, a jaw on a track grabs the log and feeds it forward, then holds it in place for extra stability while cutting. The tip pan system holds the cutoff log so it falls consistently into the splitting chamber without jamming. The 16,000- MULTITEK NORTH AMERICA LLC MULTITEK 1620 SS The 1620 SS will return to the 2018 Shoot-Out. A notable feature of this mill is the guillotine-action circle saw blade that moves straight down on a track instead of swinging. 14 OESCO/TAJFUN RCA 480 JOY MOBILE Anew version of the Tajfun RCA 480 Joy is competing in this year s Firewood Shoot-Out. After a highly successful showing at the 2016 Shoot-Out in which the 480 crushed its way through logs at the rate of 3.6 cords per hour, Tajfun fitted the machine with its own power supply. The geared-down 37-hp Kohler motor bolts to the frame, turning a 430-rpm power takeoff shaft. The 480 can also run from a tractor PTO, if desired. For portability, the entire unit, including the log deck, is mounted on a trailer frame, so bringing it into the Shoot-Out arena should take just a few minutes.
