4 INTRODUCTION Congratulations on purchasing an Ozito Line Trimmer. We aim to provide quality tools at an affordable price. We hope you will enjoy using this tool for many years. Your Line Trimmer LTR-301 has been designed for trimming lawn edges and grass around shrubs and trees. This product is intended for DIY use only. ELECTRICAL SAFETY WARNING When using mains-powered equipment, basic safety precautions, including the following, should always be followed to reduce risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury and material damage. Read and understand the manual prior to operating this tool. Save these instructions and other documents supplied with this tool for future reference. The electric motor has been designed for 230V and 240V only. Always check that the power supply corresponds to the voltage on the rating plate. Note: The supply of 230V and 240V on Ozito tools are interchangeable for Australia and New Zealand. This tool is double insulated in accordance with AS/NZS 60335; therefore no earth wire is required. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a qualified electrician or a power tool repairer in order to avoid a hazard. If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock. Note: Double insulation does not take the place of normal safety precautions when operating this tool. The insulation system is for added protection against injury resulting from a possible electrical insulation failure within the tool. Using an extension lead Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool. Before use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing. Replace the extension lead if damaged or defective. When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. 5 GENERAL POWER TOOL SAFETY WARNINGS WARNING Read all safety warnings and all instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury. The term power tool" in all of the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool. 1) Work area safety a) Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents. b) Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. c) Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control. 2) Electrical safety a) Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock. b) Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded. c) Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. d) Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock. e) When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock. f) If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock. 3) Personal safety a) Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury. b) Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries. c) Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents. 5

A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury. e) Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations. f) Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts. g) If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards. 4) Power tool use and care a) Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed. b) Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired. c) Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally. d) Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users. e) Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool's operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools. f) Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control. g) Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation. 5) Service a) Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained. b) If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. 6

7 LINE TRIMMER SAFETY WARNINGS Hold power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Cutting accessory contacting a "live" wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live and could give the operator an electric shock. This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Recommendations for the use of a residual current device with a rated residual current of 30mA or less. Using an Extension Lead Extension Cords shall be not lighter than: if rubber insulated, ordinary tough rubber sheathed flexible cord (code designation IEC 53); if polyvinyl chloride insulated, ordinary polyvinyl chloride sheathed flexible cord (code designation IEC 53). Always use an approved extension lead suitable for the power input of this tool. Before use, inspect the extension lead for signs of damage, wear and ageing. Replace the extension lead if damaged or defective. When using an extension lead on a reel, always unwind the lead completely. Use of an extension lead not suitable for the power input of the tool or which is damaged or defective may result in a risk of fire and electric shock. It is recommended that the extension lead is a maximum of 25m in length. Do Not use multiple extension leads. Before use check the supply and extension cord for signs of damage or aging. If the cord becomes damaged during use, disconnect the cord from the supply immediately. DO NOT TOUCH THE CORD BEFORE DISCONNECTING THE SUPPLY. Do not use the line trimmer if the cord is damaged or worn. Keep extension cord away from cutting line. Never allow children or people unfamiliar with these instructions to use the line trimmer. Avoid using the line trimmer, while people, especially children or pets, are nearby. Use the line trimmer only in daylight or good artificial light. Never operate the line trimmer with damaged guards or without guards in place. Switch on the line trimmer only when the hands and feet are away from the cutting head. Never fit metal cutting blades. Use only the manufacturer's recommended replacement parts and accessories. Always disconnect the line trimmer from the mains when leaving the line trimmer unattended. 7

8 LINE TRIMMER SAFETY WARNINGS (cont.) Disconnect the line trimmer from the mains before carrying out maintenance or cleaning work. Inspect and maintain the line trimmer regularly. Have the line trimmer repaired only by an authorized repairer. Take care against injury from the blade(s) fitted for trimming the cutting line length. After extending new cutting line, always return the line trimmer to its normal operating position before switching on. When not in use, store the line trimmer out of the reach of children. Face the cutting head away from yourself, other people and animals while the power is connected to the line trimmer (especially during operation). Disconnect the power when changing spools or clearing grass from under the guard. Disconnect the power from the line trimmer before making any adjustments. Use both handles. Keep ventilation openings clear of debris. Keep handles dry, clean and free of oil and grease. Never reach underneath the line trimmer (the cutting line area) until it has completely stopped and the power has been disconnected. 8

9 ASSEMBLY WARNING Before assembly, make sure that the line trimmer is switched off and unplugged. Fitting the edging wheel Note: Take care when unwrapping both halves of the edging wheel (8) not to discard the two assembly screws (ST3x12mm) attached. 1. Align both halves of the edging wheel (8) onto the line trimmer housing as shown (Fig. 1). 2. Secure the edging wheel (8) in place with the two screws supplied using a Phillips head screwdriver (Fig. 2). 3. When secured ensure that the edging wheel is free to rotate on the housing. Slide the safety guard (7) in the recess under the edging wheel (8) and align with the screw holes either side of the motor housing, secure from underneath with the two screws (ST4.2x15mm) supplied (Fig. 3) using a Phillips head screwdriver. Note: The edging wheel (8) should rotate on the trimmer housing and not come into contact with the safety guard (7) when both parts are fitted correctly. Align Holes Secure Fig. 2 Fig. 3 WARNING Never use the line trimmer unless the safety guard is properly fitted. Fitting the auxiliary handle 1. Rotate the bracket to the foreside of the main handle (1) (Fig. 4). 2. Place the auxiliary handle (12) on the bracket and adjust the angle to a comfortable position. 10 OPERATION Preparing the line trimmer for use WARNING The line trimmer runs for a few seconds after it has been switched off. Let the motor come to a complete standstill before setting the tool down. Telescopic shaft adjustment (Fig. 6) 1. The line trimmer shaft can be adjusted to suit the height of the operator. 2. Loosen the telescopic shaft collar (5) by rotating in a clockwise direction. 3. Adjust the telescopic shaft (11) up or down to the appropriate height. Tighten the telescopic shaft collar (5) once adjustment is complete Fig. 6 Manually increasing the cutting line (Fig. 7) 1. Before starting ensure the cutting line is the correct length. 2. Push the tab on the side of the spool housing and then pull on the end of both pieces of line protruding from the spool housing until it extends a few centimetres past the edge of the safety guard (7). 3. Depress the On/Off switch and allow the line trimmer to reach full speed. 2. Release the On/Off switch and allow the line trimmer to come to a stop or until you hear a click. repeat steps 1 & 2 until required length is achieved. Adjusting the cutting head (Fig. 8) By adjusting the cutting head angle to any of the 11 preset angles the line trimmer can be used to trim under low hanging branches and shrubs or garden furniture. Depress the head angle lock button (6) and adjust the cutting head to the desired angle. Release the button (6) and ensure that the cutting head locks in position. 6 Fig. 8 10

11 OPERATION (cont.) Edging mode (Fig. 11) WARNING Before making this change, make sure that line trimmer is switched off and unplugged. In order to use the line trimmer as an edger, adjust as follows: 1. Push the rotating head button (10) on the motor housing, then rotate the housing to the edging position. 2. Release rotating head button (10), ensure the motor housing firmly clicks into position and you hear the click sound. 3. The trimmer can now be used for edging. Extension cord retainer (Fig. 9) To avoid detaching the extension cord always check that it is attached to the cord retainer (3) before using trimmer. 1. Make a loop with the extension cord and push it through the square hole under the grip of the On/Off switch (2). 2. Place the end of the loop round cord retainer (3) and ensure it is pulled firmly enough to 3 prevent it from coming loose whilst operating the trimmer. 3. Connect the extension cord socket to the line trimmer cord plug. Starting the line trimmer 1. Connect the extension cord to a power supply. 2. To switch ON the line trimmer press the On/Off switch (2). 3. 12 OPERATION (cont.) Trimming WARNING Make sure that the work area is free of rocks, debris, lines and other foreign objects. Your line trimmer will work at its best if you observe the following instructions: Never use the line trimmer without its safety devices. Do not cut grass when it is wet. The best results are achieved on dry grass. To switch ON your line trimmer, press the On/Off switch (2). To switch OFF your line trimmer, let go of the On/Off switch (2). Do not move the line trimmer against the grass until the switch is pressed, i.e. wait until the line trimmer is running before placing in grass. For the correct cutting action, swing the line trimmer from side to side as you walk forward, holding it at an angle of approx. 30 as you do so. Make several passes to cut long grass shorter step by step from the top (Fig. 10). Keep the line trimmer away from hard Fig. 10 objects in order to avoid unnecessary line wear. Note: Periodically clean out the grass between the spool and the rim of the guard to prevent the tool from vibrating, ensure the line trimmer is switched off and unplugged. The Ozito ACCLT-05 spool & line is compatible with the LTR-301 line trimmer.

13 MAINTENANCE (cont.) 1. Turn your line trimmer upside down. 2. Depress both tabs (e) on both sides of the spool housing and remove the spool cover (a) from the spool housing (c). 3. Remove the empty spool (f) from the spool housing (c). 4. Remove any dirt and grass from the spool cover (a) and spool housing (c). 5. Secure the ends of each line (a) either side into the notches (d) leaving 10cm of cutting line (a) for feeding into the two eyelets (g). 6. Insert the rewound spool (f) into the spool housing (c). Rotate the spool (f) slightly until it is seated. 7. Align the tabs (e) on the spool cover (a) with the cut outs in the spool housing (c). Then push the spool cover (a) back into the spool housing (c) until the clips (e) click into position. 8. Pull each end of the line (a) to release from the notches (d). Winding new line onto a spool (Fig. 13) a f d j b d Fig. 13 You may wind new cutting line onto an empty spool. Cutting line is available from any Bunnings Warehouse. Only use cutting line that is 1.5mm (solid) or 1.6mm (twisted) in diameter, using different line can result in poor performance or damage the motor. 1. Remove the empty spool from the line trimmer as described above steps Remove any remaining cutting line from the spool. 3. Measure no more than 10 metres of new line. Divide the line evenly so you find the half-way point and cut in half. 4. Place each end of the cutting line through the hole in the spool (b) to lock it in place. 5. Wind the cutting line (a) onto the spool (f) in the direction of the arrow (j). Make sure to wind the line (a) on neatly and in layers. Do not cross the line as this will stop it from feeding. 6. Complete winding the line and ensure that the line does not protrude past the end of the spool (f) edge. 7. Secure the ends of each line (a) either side into the notches (d) leaving 10cm of cutting line (a) for feeding into the two eyelets (g). 8. Insert the rewound spool (f) into the spool housing (c). Rotate the spool (f) slightly until it is seated. 9. Align the tabs (e) on the spool cover (a) with the cut outs in the spool housing (c). Then push the spool cover (a) back into the spool housing (c) until the clips (e) click into position. 10. Pull each end of the line (a) to release from the notches (d). 13

14 MAINTENANCE (cont.) Keep the ventilation vents of the tool clean at all times, if possible, prevent foreign matter from entering the vents. After each use, blow air through the tool housing to ensure it is free from all dust particles which may build up. Build up of dust particles may cause the tool to overheat and fail. If the enclosure of the tool requires cleaning do not use solvents but a moist soft cloth only. Never let any liquid get inside the tool; never immerse any part of the tool into a liquid. Note: Ozito Industries will not be responsible for any damage or injuries caused by the repair of the tool by an unauthorised person or by mishandling of the tool.
