3 Hands-on Demonstration: Gouge Reports for Tapping and Thread Milling Gouges are no longer reported for Tapping, Thread Milling, and Boss Thread Milling operations due to material being removed from the threaded volume. 4 Prerequisites: 1. You will need access to NX CAM in order to run this demonstration. 2. If you haven t done so already, download and unzip Gouge Reports for Tapping and Thread Milling.7z. You will find the.7z file attached directly to this Tech Tip article in the NX Manufacturing Forum. Demo: 1. Open gouge_check.prt in NX. Gouge and Collision Check dialog box 2. In the Geometry View of the Operation Navigator, select BOSS_THREAD_MILLING. This operation threads the two bosses. 3. Double-click BOSS_THREAD_MILLING to edit the operation. 4

5 Notice that Gouge Checking has been selected. This option will only report actual gauges such as those caused by a tool that is too large. Material correctly removed from the threaded volume is no longer reported as a gouge. 4. Click Cancel in the Boss Thread Milling dialog box. 5. Right-click BOSS_THREAD_MILLING and select Tool Path Gouge Check. 6. Click OK. The Information window indicates that no gouge motions were found. Prior to this enhancement, gouge motions would have been reported. 7. Close the Information window. 8. Right-click BOSS_THREAD_MILLING and select Tool Path List Gouges. Again, the Information window indicates that no gouge motions were found. 9. Close the Information window. 10. Repeat these steps using the THREAD_MILLING and TAP_S1H_THREAD operations. Tool Path Visualization dialog box 11. Right-click BOSS_THREAD_MILLING and select Tool Path Verify. 12. Select the Replay tab. 13. Click Gouge and Collision Settings. 14. Select the Check for Gouges check box. 15. Select the List Gouges when Finished check box. 16. Click OK. 17. Click Play. There should be no gouges listed. 18. Close the Information window. 19. Click Cancel in the Tool Path Visualization dialog box. 20. Repeat these steps using the THREAD_MILLING and TAP_S1H_THREAD operations. 5

6 Tool Path Editor dialog box 21. Right-click BOSS_THREAD_MILLING and select Tool Path Edit. 22. Click Gouge and Collision Check. 23. Click Check for Gouges and Collisions. There should be no gouges displayed. 24. Click Cancel in the Gouge and Collision Check dialog box. 25. Click Cancel in the Tool Path Editor dialog box. 26. Repeat these steps for THREAD_MILLING. 6

7 Simulation Control Panel dialog box 27. Right-click BOSS_THREAD_MILLING and select Tool Path Simulate. 28. In the Simulation Settings section of the dialog box, click Simulation Settings. 29. In the Collision Detection section of the dialog box, select On from the Collision Detection list. 30. Click Specify Collision Pairs. 31. In the First Object section of the dialog box, select Class from the Filter list. 32. Select _PART from the Name list. 33. In the Second Object section of the dialog box, select Class from the Filter list. 34. Select _TOOL from the Name list. 35. Click OK in the Specify Collision Pairs dialog box. 36. Click OK in the Simulation Settings dialog box. 37. Click Play. No gouges should be detected. 38. Click Close in the Simulation Control Panel dialog box. 39. Repeat these for the THREAD_MILLING and TAP_S1H_THREAD operations. 40. Close the part without saving when you have finished. 7
