#SEU 2016 PMI and CAM Express Realize innovation.
PMI and CAM Express A PMI Primer Two Methods to Transfer Data Solid Edge Connection JT File transfer Interoperability function (change to a different model) Caveats Page 2
PMI Primer Product Manufacturing Information (PMI): Manufacturing Information applied to the 3D CAD model Includes Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Fits and Limits 3D annotation (text) and dimensions Surface finish and material specifications Page 3
PMI Primer GD&T is MI applied to a drawing PMI is MI applied to a CAD model Page 4
PMI Primer Why is it important? PMI is used in conjunction with the 3D model within model-based definition to allow for the elimination of 2D drawings for data set utilization. Page 5
PMI Enables MBD PMI enables Model-Based Definition: 3D Model becomes master for dispute resolution (not drawing) Drawing becomes reference Opposite of Old Methodology Master Reference Page 6
PMI Enables MBD PMI enables Model-Based Definition: Manufacturing Engineer Design Engineer Page 7 Inspection Engineer
PMI Enables MBD PMI enables Model-Based Definition: Manufacturing Engineer Design Engineer Page 8 Inspection Engineer
PMI Enables MBD PMI enables Model-Based Definition: Page 9
Transferring Data Across Platforms OK, I get it - PMI is the faster, cheaper, better way to get manufacturing information about the model to downstream users. But, what if I m using non-solid Edge applications for those downstream applications? How does PMI get transferred then? I m glad you asked! Page 10
JT Serves as PMI Conduit JT is: A CAD file format developed by Siemens Open-source Lightweight in terms of size Approved by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as an International Standard (ISO IS14306) A conduit for PMI Page 11
We had a problem Solid Edge Connection Thread Information No PMI JT PMI Add No Thread Information! Page 12
Demo Two Methods to Transfer Data Solid Edge Connection JT File transfer Page 13
Questions: 1. Why don t dimensions to center of threaded hole come across as recognized PMI? Because Dimension is to center of object, not edge (center is theoretical point, and not selectable) 2. What about annotations to PMI dimensions? Since they are part of PMI, they are still PMI (but no automatic action taken by CAM Express) Page 14
Use JT for PMI Transfer between Solid Edge and NX CAM From Solid Edge: Page 15

Potential Uses for PMI Information Use Case 1 Location tolerance for a hole: Loose location tolerance: Center drill or spot drill (perhaps optional) Drill Tight location tolerance: Center drill or spot drill (not optional) Drill undersized Bore for accurate location Feature-Based Machining module in CAM Express allows this today (with some rule changes) Page 20
Potential Uses for PMI Information Use Case 2 Size tolerance for a hole: Loose size tolerance: Center drill or spot drill (perhaps optional) Drill Tight location tolerance: Center drill or spot drill (perhaps optional) Drill undersized Ream for accurate size Feature-Based Machining module in CAM Express allows this today (with some rule changes) Page 21
Potential Uses for PMI Information Use Case 3 surface finish of a wall (milled with side of tool): No surface finish specification: Rough mill wall and floor Finish mill wall along with floor (cutting both surfaces at once Smooth surface finish specification: Rough mill floor Rough mill wall Finish mill floor Finish mill wall (with special cutter, special speed/feed, multiple passes, spring pass, etc.) Feature-Based Machining module in CAM Express does not allow this today must be done by CNC Programmer Page 22
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) U.S. Department of Commerce: Publications Test Cases Comparative Methodology Page 23
Enhancement Request There are two enhancement requests to improve JT workflow: ER to request JT file option for Tools-CAM Express (inside Solid Edge) ER to request JT file option for Open Solid Edge File for CAM in CAM Express Page 24
Maintain Associativity Demo of two methods: Traditional (Solid Edge Connection) JT Page 25
Summary If you don t need/use PMI yet: Continue to use Solid Edge Connection for easiest transfer If you use PMI now: Use JT file transfer mechanism See me about supporting active ERs or filing new ones Let me know of your interest and pain points in this area In either case: Stay up-to-date on PMI initiatives by joining our community Page 26
