3 Safe Working Practice: 34a Installing Conduit - Flexible 1 PURPOSE: The purpose of this guide is to highlight safe working practices for: Installing Conduit - Flexible IT MUST NOT BE TREATED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR TRAINING 2 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Operators must wear Safety Boots/Shoes incorporating steel toe-caps CDI issued work wear Dust masks where appropriate Ear protectors - where appropriate. 3 BEFORE WORK Flexible To comply with BS 731 / BS Flexible conduit (Copex) is only to be used to form short connections between other containment systems, or where a run is required to be moveable. Typical examples are linking a steel conduit to a machine where Copex is installed through a cabling trough in the machine, or linking a basket tray to a floor box in a raised floor where the floor box may have to move in future. 4 DURING WORK Where the feeder conduit is steel, or where mechanical damage is possible, steel lined Copex should be used. All PVC Copex should only be used where risk of mechanical damage is very low. Installation of Copex is by loose laying, do not fix as the tube needs to be able to move. Normal conduit boxes will fit onto Copex, and through boxes are used to form a feed point in a longer run. You can use cable base fixings with Tyraps to fix flexible conduit to a wall, or it can be Trapped direct for other applications. Be careful not to over tighten the Tyraps and crush the Copex termination is by cutting with a hand held junior hacksaw, as for PVC The end coupler is fitted to the Copex by threaded gland. Be careful not to over tighten these as this can cause the thread to strip, and the gland to become loose 5 AFTER WORK Check all tools for any damage, and place them out of use if any is found. 4 Safe Working Practice: 34b Installing Conduit Pipe Vice 1 PURPOSE: The purpose of this guide is to highlight safe working practices for: Installing Conduit. Using a Pipe Vice for Steel Conduit. IT MUST NOT BE TREATED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR TRAINING. 2 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Operators must wear Safety Boots/Shoes incorporating steel toe-caps CDI issued work wear Dust masks where appropriate Ear protectors - where appropriate. 3 BEFORE WORK Steel conduit is cut, bent, and threaded using a floor standing pipe vice for support. The person using the pipe vice must be fully trained to do so, or if an apprentice closely supervised by a trained person. Always visually inspect the vice to ensure it is complete, and in good condition. Pay particular attention to the vice jaws to ensure they are not damaged, as this can result in the work piece slipping. Set up the vice on it s legs, on a level, dry, none slippery surface. Ensure that there is plenty of room around the vice to allow for conduit to be moved around, and in the vice / bender itself. If the area of installation is not suitable for the vice, set up in another area that is suitable, and carry the conduit pieces to and from the vice. You will need a second person present to warn passers by where this involves moving conduit through a public area. Ensure that you have a dustsheet to catch the swarf created by the cutting / threading, and empty this into a suitable skip / bin as soon as it becomes covered. Be careful not to step into the swarf on the cloth, spreading it to other areas on your footwear. 4 DURING WORK Threading involves the use of a cutting compound such as tallow, to lubricate the thread. Ensure that this is kept in a sealed bag / container when not in use, and wear gloves when handling the tube of wax. Cut ends of tube are very sharp, run a set of pliers around the inside of the tube as soon as it is cut to remove sharp edges, NEVER use a finger to check if the inside of the tube is clear of swarf. Stack cut and bent sections of tube neatly, move them out of the cutting area as soon as possible. Be aware when bending conduit that the tube swings through an arc from the bender, do not perform this work in an area where others are in the bending arc area, or where the area is too small to allow the tube to swing fully through it s arc. When threading a cut conduit, be careful to lubricate the tube at regular intervals, turning two revolutions of cutting, to one revolution reversed to clear the swarf from the die. Always wear goggles when cutting / threading tube as swarf can fly through the air. RA Number: 34a - Issue Revision: 3 Page 4 of 8

5 5 AFTER WORK Always check that the vice is complete with all of it s parts, and is in good condition. Return it to storage, or back to CDI when you have finished with it. 6 Safe Working Practice: 34c Installing Conduit Bending Spring 1 PURPOSE: The purpose of this guide is to highlight safe working practices for: Installing Conduit. Using a bending spring for PVC IT MUST NOT BE TREATED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR TRAINING. 2 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Operators must wear Safety Boots/Shoes incorporating steel toe-caps CDI issued work wear Dust masks where appropriate Ear protectors - where appropriate. 3 BEFORE WORK PVC conduit is cut and bent by hand, typically cut on a work surface / bench, and bent over the knee. The person using the spring should be supervised if not fully experienced in using it. The spring is inserted into the conduit to prevent it from splitting or collapsing when it is bent. A length of cable is attached to the end of the spring to allow it to be pulled out of the tube when bending is completed. Always ensure that the spring is in good condition, with no stretching apparent, and that the cable is tightly fitted, and has it s insulation intact. 4 DURING WORK Always lay the tube down flat when removing the spring, and wear gloves to protect fingers. Be aware that the spring stretches when the tube is bent, and may require a good deal of strength to remove it, this can result in the spring snapping closed on removal, always keep your hands clear of the tube opening when removing the spring. Get another person to help by holding the tube down if you feel the spring is too difficult to remove on your own. Cutting of the tube is by junior hacksaw, always cut on a level surface, wearing gloves, and goggles as required. 5 AFTER WORK Inspect the spring and cable for any damage, replace the cable if stretched or damaged. Place the spring out of use if it is damaged. 7 Safe Working Practice: 34d Installing Conduit 1 PURPOSE: The purpose of this guide is to highlight safe working practices for: Installing Conduit. IT MUST NOT BE TREATED AS A SUBSTITUTE FOR TRAINING 2 PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT Operators must wear Safety Boots/Shoes incorporating steel toe-caps CDI issued work wear Dust masks where appropriate Ear protectors - where appropriate. 3 BEFORE WORK. All conduit work by CDI will be surface. Conduit systems buried in slabs etc will be installed by others. In many cases the conduit installation will form a part of the M&E package. When this is the case the CDI Senior engineer will fully inspect the conduit installation prior to start, and will report any issues to the M&E contractor, or the client. As a rule only 20mm and 25mm sized tubes will be used. Cabling loadings for these sizes are; 20mm Cat5e x 4. 20mm Cat6 x 2. 25mm Cat5e x 6. 25mm Cat6 x 4. These loadings are maximum, and for short straight runs. Every conduit run must be individually assessed as to loading prior to installation. There are two types of conduit used by CDI, these are PVC, which can be black or white, and galvanised steel. Black enamel conduit is not used by CDI. PVC conduit is to comply with BS 4607 / 6053 / & Steel conduit is to comply with BS 4568 / DURING WORK In both cases installation shall comply with manufacturers guidelines, the manufacturer being a member of the Conduit Manufacturers Association. Use steel conduit in all industrial applications, and where mechanical damage is a possibility. PVC conduit is only used in domestic / office type environments, and where risk of mechanical damage is low. The specialist installation equipment for these has already been covered. An important factor is to choose the most suitable run for the tubing. Routes are chosen for ease of installation, to keep the conduits as straight as possible, and away from other services. Where possible, manufacturers fittings should be used. In order to achieve a first class finish use as few boxes as possible. The types of conduit boxes are; Through; for a feeding point in a long run. Angle; for turning a corner, or forming a bend. 8 4 Continued/. Conduit boxes are fitted to the conduit by push fit on PVC, or by cutting a thread onto steel tube to screw fit the box. Remember when push fitting on PVC tube to leave at least 50% clearance in the push fitting to allow for expansion of the tube when warm. Otherwise distortion will occur. You should not use glue on saddles or push fit PVC conduits. Conduit boxes are always fitted with a lid of the same material, secured by short 4mm lid pins. Conduit is supported by saddles, there are two types of saddle; Space bar; this is a saddle mounted on a spacing plate. The purpose of the spacing plate is to set the conduit off the wall the same depth as other fittings, sockets etc, keeping the run straight. Distance saddle; also known as hospital saddle. The purpose of this saddle is to raise the conduit off the surface enough to allow for cleaning, and to create the tube and the surface to prevent corrosion where damp is present. 5 AFTER WORK Carefully clean down the conduit using a proprietary cleaner, and ensure that all box lid pins are tight. Dispose of all off cuts of conduit in the appropriate place. Check all tools and equipment for damage, and place any damaged equipment out of use.
