YORKTOWNE CABINETRY is proud to have earned the KCMA Certification Seal for all door styles manufactured. The Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association Certification Program assures the specifier or user of kitchen cabinets and bath vanities that the cabinets bearing the KCMA seal comply with the rigorous standards set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Further, the cabinets are exact duplicates of samples that have been independently tested to ANSI/KCMA A and paragraph , "HUD Minimum Property Standards - Housing " YORKTOWNE CABINETRY put its cabinets through 13 rigorous KCMA tests and passed them all. This ensures the cabinets will live up to your expectations. Shelves and bottoms are loaded at 15 pounds per square foot to ensure no excessive deflection or joint failure on the cabinet or mounting system. Installed wall cabinets are loaded with 500 pounds to ensure that the cabinet will accept net loading in compliance with ANSI A requirements. A load of up to 250 pounds is applied against the inside of cabinet fronts to ensure reliable front joints. A 3 pound steel ball is drop tested against shelves, cabinet bottoms and drawer bodies to ensure cabinets will withstand dropping of cans and other items. Cabinets are impact tested by striking the center of a closed and open door with a 10 pound sand bag. Cabinet doors are weighted with 65 pounds and operated 10 times to test the ability of the door and hinges to withstand loading. Doors are opened and closed for 25,000 cycles to ensure durability under the stress of normal usage. Drawers and drawer mechanisms are tested at 15 pounds per square foot and operated through 25,000 opening and closing cycles to assure durability. A 3 pound weight is dropped 10 times against the drawer assembly to ensure that the drawer front assembly will withstand the impact of closing. Cabinets are cycle tested at temperatures ranging from -5 F to +120 F to ensure finish will withstand temperature changes. Cabinets are hot box tested at temperatures up to 120 F to ensure finish will withstand high heat. Finish is exposed to vinegar, grape juice, olive oil, lemon juice, 100 proof alcohol and more to ensure no appreciable discoloration, stain or whitening of the finish occurs. A 24-hour soap and water solution test checks the finish's ability to withstand exposure to detergents and moisture. Complete details on testing information can be found at 2

These pages will help you become familiar with the specific style features that are exclusively designed to showcase the formal detail and graceful lines of the contrasting fluted columns. This will establish the classic style that adds visual interest to the library grouping. Refer to your Yorktowne Specification Book for dimensions and size availability. These are the common structural traits of Yorktowne s Library Cabinets: Both top and bottom bookcases are 12" depths. Both top and bottom bookcases can be modified to 15" or 18" depth by using the Change Depth (CD) modification. Interior backs can be ordered as beaded board. Both top and bottom bookcases have extra wide face frame stiles designed to easily accommodate the fluted column overlay on the face. Fluted or beaded columns are pre-assembled over a filler to build-out the dimension. Units are available for 8', 9' and 10' assembled heights. Fascia board must be cut down to 9 1/4" in height to achieve 8', 9' and 10' height. Both top and bottom cabinets are intended to be installed flush against each other. Library units can be installed free standing or between two confined walls. Free standing units must include end panel trim and moldings. LIBRARY BOOKCASE TOPS (LBCT) Available in 61", 73" and 85" heights. Width availability is 27", 30", 33", 36", 42", 45" and 48". The bookcase side stile is extra wide to accommodate the fluted column overlay of the face frame. It measures 4" on the top bookcase. The top rail is 3", while the bottom rail is 1-1/2". LIBRARY BOOKCASE BOTTOMS (LBCB) All are 28 1/2" in height with double doors and a fixed center stile. Width availability is 27", 30, 33", 36", 39", 42", 45" and 48". The bookcase side stile is extra wide to accommodate the fluted column overlay of the face frame. It measures 4-1/2" on the bookcase bottom. The top rail is 1-1/2". The bookcase has a 6" high wide bottom rail with no recessed toe kick area. 6

FLUTED COLUMN (FC) The fluted column is factory pre-assembled and ready to position against the library system. The column is designed to overlay the front face of both the top and bottom bookcase cabinets. The column height is a combined dimension of the rosette, fluted overlay and the plinth block. For your reference on pages 4 and 5, we illustrate the individual dimensions. This dimension does not account for the 2-1/4" installation tabs above the rosette blocks. 6" Fluted Columns shown are also available in 3" widths. The fluted column will rest in front of the cabinet s face frame. The last column in a grouping will need to be supported with a cleat from behind. Review the installation guide for cleating instructions. Fluted columns will always overlay the face frame with a consistent margin when the bookcases are installed beside each other without any space left between them. Bookcases can be spaced apart as needed to fit the space. 3/4" LIBRARY MOLDING PROFILES: 1-1/2" 2-1/16" 5/8" M11 M30 M31 2-1/16" 7/16" M11 M30 Counter edge molding used at bookcase top head rail to fill in the void left when fascia board is applied. 8 FREE-STANDING LIBRARY END PANEL OPTIONS ARE: Option A Option B Option C Option D Option A Option B shows crown and fascia board only. Other finishing trim and molding is needed. The laminate panels of the bookcase sides create a seam that needs to be addressed. Options B through D offer various complementary looks. demonstrates the placement and identifies the moldings needed to finish the end panel. Crown, facia board, M17 profile edge and VBB valance base board are used. Option C shows that a veneer panel (REP or VP 4X8) can be cut down to conceal the end of the library unit which eliminates the need for the M17 profile edge molding. The column must be adjusted to conceal the trimmed edge. The crown, fascia board and VBB valance base board are still needed for finish detail. Option D illustrates the application of a deluxe tall end panel (DLXTE) in the appropriate height. The DLXTE panel will conceal the factory end panel. The crown, fascia board and VBB base board are the only moldings needed to finish this application. See your Yorktowne Specification Book for size availability. 8

LIBRARY COMPONENT IDENTIFICATION Yorktowne s library systems can be used as a single free-standing unit or several units grouped together to create a full wall of built-in bookcase cabinetry. 9

This section of the guide has been designed to help you install Yorktowne library units. Each library component is sold separately, placed and trimmed much the same way that cabinets are when used in a kitchen design. The bookcase bottom has the same type of concealed hanging rail used in kitchen cabinetry. Trim pieces are applied in the same fashion. In the installation of any open cabinetry, it is important to conceal and touch up the mounting screws and finishing nails used in the process. 1CHECK MEASUREMENTS Measure the wall and floor designated for the cabinets to ensure a professional fit. Review the floor plan dimensions. If the plan is a between wall application, identify the cabinets position on the side wall as well as the back wall. When the library unit is free standing with open exposed ends there will be some additional steps to finish the sides of the unit. Mark the location of the wall studs. To insure accuracy, measure at the floor, then 30" above the floor and at the designated overall height of the unit. Verify that the wall is square in at least three vertical locations, as shown in the illustration. Check your materials list with the floor plan. 2MARK THE WALL Mark the wall position of the top and bottom bookcase cabinets. With a between wall design, identify the remainder of the space between the structural wall and cabinets so you can position the fluted columns and cleats as needed. Top view of a between wall application marking the location for cabinet placement. Planning the location of the cabinetry and columns will help you become familiar with the components involved with the floor plan. The next step will be to identify the position of the columns with their structural supports. The columns may extend past the sides of the bookcase. In this case you will need to finish the end returns by creating a build-out with a REP384 or a DLXTE. This will flush out the column extension making it ready to receive the appropriate end treatment. 10

3INSTALL THE SIDE COLUMNS The library units must be installed to conceal all fasteners behind support pieces or attach from a concealed point. Fluted columns are factory pre-assembled with the rosette, overlay and plinth block attached to a filler. The column is designed to lay over the face frame and extend forward 1-3/4". Position the back of the supporting cleat 12" away from the back wall. The cabinet must be slid in behind the secured column. It is important to carefully level the column position before proceeding. The tall fluted columns are installed first to provide full access to the support cleats from behind. From behind the cleat, screw partially into the fluted column. When working with an exposed end application the side columns are installed now. End panels are addressed later, but before the fascia board is attached. See page 8 for finished end panel optional applications. 4 ANCHOR BOTTOM BOOKCASES Position the bottom bookcase. Set the cabinet in place and level it from front to back, shimming as needed. When your cabinet is level, anchor it to the wall using the supplied installation screws. Anchor the bookcase by screwing through the solid wood hanging rail into a wall stud. Align and wood clamp the front frames together as you install the remaining bookcase bottoms. After the bookcase bottoms are anchored to the back wall the next step is to screw the cabinets front frames together. Remember to always pre-drill pilot holes before you connect two hardwood front frames. Pre-drilling eliminates the potential for cracking and splitting of the hardwood. Level and attach the bookcase bottoms. You are now ready for the bookcase tops. IMPORTANT NOTE: Install adjustable shelves into cabinets before installing bookcase top cabinets. A six-inch column will overlay each cabinet front frame by three inches leaving the minimum margin. This margin must be maintained throughout the plan. 11

5INSTALL TOP BOOKCASES Starting at the end of the run, position the top over the installed bookcase bottom. The bookcase top will be fastened to the stud from inside the cabinet in the upper portion of the cabinet. This will minimize the exposure of the installation screws. A time saving step is to pre-drill pilot holes, preparing the cabinet for installation while it is still on the floor. Then lift it in place, slipping it behind the fluted column and into position. Level the bookcase top and shim as needed. The bookcase tops and bottoms must be screwed together from inside to conceal anchors. From inside the bookcase bottom screw upward through the bookcase s top front frame rail into the bottom rail of the top bookcase, as shown in the magnified illustration at the right. 6ATTACH COLUMN The next step is to install the other columns. Position the fluted column(s) in the mid-section of the bookcase to cover the wide stiles that are designed to accept the overlay columns. Do not overlay the face frame between doors more than 3" per cabinet. This maintains the minimum margin next to the cabinet doors allowing the doors to open. The fluted column will overlay the face of each cabinet by three inches. A column should equally straddle both cabinet stiles leaving the same margin on both sides. Position the column(s) over the face frame. Attach from behind the frame. The center column(s) are positioned to equally straddle both cabinet frames. When positioned properly, the doors on the bottom library unit will freely open past the decorative column. Attach the column(s) to the face frame with 1-1/2" long installation screws. Continue installation of all remaining columns. The next step will be the trim moldings. 12

7APPLY TOP TRIM MOLDING When installed, the fluted column extends 1-3/4" in front of the face frame. A gap is created at the top rail after the fascia board is installed over the fluted columns. This space must be filled with molding. The M11 trim has a single edge profile and must be cut to fit between the columns and against the horizontal face of the cabinet. The molding is applied to add a decorative treatment and to fill the voided space left when the fascia is applied. This space is 3/4" x 3/4", a perfect fit for the M11 molding. The M11 trim should be positioned with the decorative edge at 1/2" below the top edge of the rosette block. This will align the molding properly, preparing the top section for the next step. 8ATTACH FASCIA BOARD After the M11 molding has been attached, the next step is to fasten the fascia board to create a soffit for the crown molding. The fascia board is positioned horizontally over the rosettes creating a soffit. The fascia board is cut from the FB1096 board. The fascia board should be trimmed to 9-1/4" in height and scribed to the ceiling. If your library unit is wider than 96", it will require the use of two or more fascia boards. Whenever possible it is best to plan your seams to be directly centered over the columns. The fascia is attached with finishing nails which are counter sunk, then concealed in the touch-up step. If you are installing a free standing or exposed end application, install the appropriate end panels before attaching the fascia board. Miter the fascia board corners where the boards meet and return along the side of the library unit. M11 molding has 1/2" reveal below the fascia. 13

9BUILD CROWN MOLDING Measure the length of the fascia board to determine the linear feet of materials needed. If you are installing between two walls, the crown molding will be a straight cut. When crowning a free standing with exposed ends, you will need to account for the miters required for the returns. The M35 or M36 molding will, in most cases, need a complementary accent molding inserted into the recess channel of the crown. See page 7 for insert molding. The crown molding is face nailed to the fascia board. If molding accents are used, the fasteners can be concealed under them. Pre-drill pilot holes for finish nails. Use counter sunk finish nails and touch up entry points for a flawless finish on the accent moldings. Touch-up is addressed in Step FINISH BASE BOARD TRIM The base of the library unit will require VBB96 base board to finish. The VBB96 must be cut to fit in between the columns and cover the bookcases bottom rail. Before application, the VBB must be cut down to 4-1/2" in height. To achieve the best appearance, use one continuous piece between each of the columns. A spliced base board can produce unprofessional results. The baseboard is face nailed to the toe area. If the library is a free standing unit, the return sides will need to be addressed which is based on your choice of end panel treatments. If decorative end panels are specified, continue the VBB96 at the floor. If the exposed ends require additional moldings, use M17 where the top and bottom bookcases meet and VBB at the floor to finish the base. The molding treatments used on the front of the library should be carried out to match the return of the cabinet. M47 decorative baseboard may be used in place of VBB, valance baseboard for a more stylized final detail. 14

11 SEAM TRIM BETWEEN CABINETS The bookcase tops sit above the bookcase bottoms which creates a seam that requires molding treatment. The molding M17, an edge treatment, is used to cover the seam. The molding must be cut to fit between the fluted columns and horizontally overlay the seam where the cabinets are stacked on top of one another. Note that the M17 molding should be positioned and screwed from inside the cabinet, using the seam as a reference point. If the units ends are exposed, the same molding should be carried out on the side of the library unit. 12 COMPLETE THE FINAL TOUCH-UP As in any installation, the final detail will be in the touch up of the assembled unit. The designer should have included a Touch-up Kit to match the cabinet finish. Always wipe down the furniture with a soft, dry cloth to remove any installation dust and return the wood to its original luster. A damp cloth can be used if needed. The surface then must be wiped dry. Avoid using harsh detergents, strong soaps, abrasives or polishing waxes. Fill all face nail entry points with the putty stick, then touch-up the scratches and blemishes with color marker in the Touch-up Kit. Treat the library system as fine furniture. Repair all nicks and scratches that may have occurred during installation with the matching wood tone Touch-up Kit formulated to match the Yorktowne finish. Use a putty stick to fill holes made on face nailed attachments. The Touch-up Kit should remain with the homeowner to insure long lasting beauty of their Yorktowne cabinetry. 15

Naturally occurring variations are inherent in real wood products. These variations should not be perceived asdefects. They include: Variations in color, shade, grain and texture. Naturally occurring mineral streaks, pitch pockets and knots. Color differences between and among wood panels and parts. These naturally occurring characteristics as found in wood products are acceptable when within our product standards and commercial tolerance. Natural woods, thermo foil and laminate products exhibit subtle changes in color as they age and are not considered product defects. Variations also occur inyorktowne s hand-wiped Glazes and Character finishes. These variations in finishes should not be considered defects in workmanship or material, but are what give each piece a unique and authentic, hand-crafted look. Please consult our Glaze Finish and Character Finish Package Agreement, as needed. The variations in finishes may include: Glaze coating color variations due to the hand wiping process. More glaze around natural characteristics in the wood and hang-up on profile edges. Variations in the evenness and thickness of finishes. Variations in the positioning, arrangement, shape and number of markings made on each cabinet. There are also environmental conditions, beyond our control, that affect wood products. These include: Natural hardwoods react to seasonal changes and dry and humid climate conditions. These changes cause expansion and contraction in wood products. Wood expands when exposed to heat and/or high humidity, and contracts when exposed to cold and/or unusually dry conditions. These extremes are often part of the normal climate in certain parts of the country. Stable atmospheric conditions are required for joints on cabinet doors and front frames to remain tight. Miter joints, in particular, are prone to open or gap as a result of extreme or unstable surrounding atmospheric environments. In most cases, a home with properly maintained heating and cooling systems will provide the stable conditions required to keep your cabinets beautiful for many years. Sunlight, smoke, household cleaners and chemicals, and other environmental conditions may also affect color and consistency over time. Changes in the product caused by these environmental conditions are not considered defects. In keeping with our policy of continuous product refinement, we reserve the right to change specifications in design and materials, as conditions require. The warranty is subject to the customer s proper handling of the cabinets and parts after delivery. The warranty is not transferable to subsequent homeowners.
