General preparations, roofing UNDERLAYMENT Sheet metal can be laid on several different kinds of underlayment. NEW CONSTRUCTION The most common roof underlayment in new constructions is usually fibreboard, plastic film or tongue-and-groove board/plywood, at least 17 mm thick with a felt paper underlay minimum YAP2200 quality, that is assembled accordance with suppliers instructions. Read more under choice of batten/batten distance. HOW TO MEASURE THE ROOF Begin by checking the roofs pitch and that the roof is even. Measure diagonally from corner to corner. If the distances are unequal, the roof is skewed. Deviations of mm can be adjusted with gable flashings. Alternatively, the angle can be checked using a triangle as illustrated. RENOVATING Clay tile and concrete tile roofs Remove the old roofing. If the existing battens and counter battens are to be used they must be moved so that the distances correspond to the dimensions in Installing battens on page 8. Replace defective battens. Shingles, felt paper, flat tiles Allow the old roof to remain as underlayment. Seal any holes in the simplest manner. The sheeting can be laid directly on the old roof on the condition that the roof is watertight, even and that underlayment is in good enough condition for fasteners to hold the sheeting down onto the underlayment, which must be at least 17 mm thick. However, we recommend the use of Plannja Kombi Battens, Plannja Renovation Battens or battens and counter battens. Sinus profile sheeting (without asbestos) The sheets may remain. Make sure they are watertight enough to act as underlayment and that the battens beneath the sheets are good enough to withstand the attachment of the batten. The lower edges of the joists are bevelled to follow the underlayment and attached in direction of pitch with screws. Batten Batten 45x70, c/c max 1,200 mm Sinus profile fibre cement sheet Plannja has developed several patented system solutions for renovating fibre cement roofs. Read more under Renovating fibre cement roofs on page 34. Checking the pitch Plannja roofing tile sheet and profiled sheet can be laid at different pitches. How to calculate the minimum pitch: If dimension A is 1 metre, dimension B must have the length indicated in column B. Minimum recommended roof pitch B A=1 m Pitch Design requirement b = Tile sheet: Minimum 1:4 (14 ) 25 cm TrendModern, Roofing sheet, Sealing strip at side and Sinus 18: Minimum 1:6 (10 ) end overlap 18 cm P20-105, P20-75: Sealing strip at side and 10 cm Minimum 1:10 (5,7 ) end overlap, underlayment In the case of pitches of less than 14 special measures must be taken to seal the roof at side overlaps and end overlaps (refer also to the installation instruction for Plannja Profiled Roofing Sheet. Sheet with anti-condensation coating can be laid down to 5.7 without underlayment. In order to calculate material consumption, various dimensions are required according to roof type. This is illustrated on the following page. Sheet metal roofs An old sheet metal roof can be renovated in several ways. The sheeting can be removed and a new roof laid, or in many cases the new sheet metal roof can be laid on top of the old one. We recommend the use of Plannja Renovation battens that are screwed to the old sheeting which must be steel sheet, at least 0,5 mm thick. 8 choosing battens Plannja roofing sheet can be installed on different types of batten. Choose either Plannja Kombi Batten, Plannja Renovation Battens or wooden battens. Note that Plannja Roofing sheet is installed on even underlayment, therefore choose Plannja roofing sheet with stiffener when installing on battens. PL ANNJA KOMBI BAT TEN Plannja Kombi Batten is intended for new constructions and renovations. It is designed to handle a truss distance of 1,200 mm. The standard length is mm and the profile height is 40 mm. Plannja Kombi Batten is supplied in kit form with fasteners. Wooden battens must be used at eaves. Attachment to truss c/c 1200 mm 6.5x50 screws are used as fasteners, two pcs. per truss. Attachment to wooden panel Minimum thickness 17 mm. Screws 4.8x35, distance max 300 mm in zigzag pattern. Tighten screws carefully so that they do not spin freely. Overlapping joins Kombi Battens are joined by mm overlaps. The joins are located above trusses. 9 SNOW LOAD MAP HANDLING SHEETing When taking delivery of sheeting As far as possible store Plannja package paneling indoors. Cover the materials with tarpaulin when storing outdoors. Store package on an incline if there is a risk of condensation. Make sure good ventilation is achieved. This applies to both steel and aluminium. Avoid damage to sheeting carry it correctly! Carry Plannja roofing tile sheet longer than 5 metres on edge or on a wooden frame. If they are carried flat the sheets will bend by their own weight and stretch. During subsequent installation problems may be encountered with the fit between different sheets. Sheet durability and walkability The walkability of thin sheet profile panels is difficult to define. In general a certain degree of care must be taken when walking and working on thin sheet roofs. Walkable sheeting refers to profiled panels that will allow careful access without being damaged or suffering ugly indentations. Walkability and durability are dependent on thickness Thicker sheeting allows greater distances between battens and provides improved walkability. For safety s sake always try to walk above or beside a batten. In the case of Plannja roofing tile sheet and Plannja Roofing sheet, always walk in the profile valley. Aluminium roofs are more sensitive Aluminium is softer than sheet steel. Therefore exercise extreme caution when walking on an aluminium roof. Note that Plannja in aluminium is not walkable at all if the batten distance is the maximum 500 mm c/c. IMPORTANT aluminium ROOFS A few things to remember when selecting an aluminium roof: a) Aluminium moves more than steel with temperature changes. If the pitch of the roof is more than 6 metres expansion and contraction can be handled by pre-drilling the top sheet at each end overlap with an ø 8 mm bit before fastening the sheet. Avoid pitches longer than 12 metres! b) When using wooden battens afix a strip of felt paper (see options selections) above the battens to avoid hearing a clicking noise during temperature changes. Not necessary when using Plannja Kombi battens or Renovation battens. Source: BFS 2011:10 - EKS 8. c) In order to prevent temperature movement all flashings must be fastened individually without using common screws in overlaps, i.e. the screws must not penetrate both flashings. 10 CUT SHEET LIKE THIS Tools Cut sheet like this Ideally, locate the cut so that it is hidden by another sheet. Note! Never use a grinding wheel for cutting. Sparks from the wheel can destroy the sheet surface. Using a keyhole saw circular saw or jigsaw Stretch battens with clamps above and below the sheet so that there is a straight edge to follow and support for the saw. Use a metal blade on the saw. The sawing must be done from the backside The following tools are required: Power screwdriver 1,500 2,000 rpm or variable speed power drill with reverse and socket for driver heads. Hammer Saw (for cutting battens) Nibbling machine, keyhole saw, jigsaw or circular saw Metal shears Folding rule Using a nibbling machine Use a batten as a straight edge and mark out where to cut with a pen. It is easy to follow the marking with the nibbling machine: no support required. Cutting lengthwise using knife Aluminium profiles can be bent apart. Score with a knife (preferably in an inside corner). When scoring a plain surface, use a straight edge as illustrated. Then bend the sheet back and forth until it parts. 10 General preparations, roofing
Assembly instructions Roof tiles This section deals with the assembly of Plannja roof tiles Royal, Regent and Smart. The assembly instruction for Plannja Regola can be found at It is important to read through the General preparations, roofing section before starting to assemble your Plannja roof. The section provides information and advice on how to measure your roof, what underlying materials are suitable, the choice of batten and batten distances, and much more besides Assembly instructions, Plannja Roof tiles 11
1. INSTALLATION OF EAVE BATTEN Wooden batten when renovating felt paper roof Begin by installing the eave batten in a straight line. Unevenness in the eaves is hidden by the eave flashing. Read more about installing gutter brackets and roof drainage on page 30. Counter batten 2. ORDER OF ASSEMBLY Plannja roofing tile sheets are installed in the following order: Eave trim Gutter Gutter bracket centre/ centre distance 600 mm. Batten 25x50* *34x70 at snow load New construction on underlayment of board or plastic film The gutter brackets are usually recessed as illustrated below. The eave flashing is temporarily fastened above the gutter brackets using e.g. sheet metal nails until such time as the roof panel is screwed in place. The sheets are laid in rows from the eaves to the ridge. Make sure to lay the first sheet with its lower edge parallel to the eaves. Slide the other sheets in the row up so that any gap at the end overlap is as small as possible before fastening. The next row is laid with the first sheet s lower edge in line with the previously laid sheet. Slide the rest of the sheets in the row up as described above before fastening. Make sure the sheet is screwed properly fast (refer to the fastening section) before walking on it. Never leave the workplace with loose sheets on the roof. In the case of special lengths (not in combination with standard lengths) it can be advantageous to lay from left to right. Note that side overlap requires sheets to be slid beneath sheeting already laid. No spacer Plannja Renovation batten on underlayment of tongue-and-grooved board or plywood at least 17 mm Staggered eaves If the roof has staggered eaves (different roof lengths on the same section of roof) the lowest tiles may be cut. If the c distance between battens is 250 mm or more, the tiles are slid beneath the tiles above. Should the c distance be less than 250 mm, it can be a better idea to have an extended eaves flashing made as illustrated. It might also be possible to adjust the length of the pitch instead by moving the protruding eaves. Plannja renovation batten Eave trim Gutter NOTE! 13 3. FIXING 4. Gable flashing Roofing tile sheets are fastened with self-drilling screws. Plannja has special sockets for installation in power drills that make screwing extremely simple. Gable flashing Self-drilling screw c/c 300 The sheet must be fastened in the profile valley using self-drilling screws equipped with seal washers. Fasten according to the sequence below. The screw marked with large dots in the figure below (side overlap) must be fastened first. Screw in every second profile valley, on ever second tile row. Place a screw at the side overlap in every profile valley. A rule of thumb is that 6 7 screws are needed per m 2. In order for the side overlap to be watertight we re- commend that the screws in the up side-overlap sheet is displaced 25 mm toward the overlap (see fig.). Bend up the sheet if it is cut, separated Royal Regent Smart H=57 mm H=40 mm H=42 mm 25 mm Fasten screws in every profile valley at end overlaps (not illustrated in sequence below). 5. RIDGE When joining flashing cut away the corners of the underlying flashing so that the lower can be slid under the upper. The join will then be a better seal and less visible. Before the ridge tile is screwed in place, any seal strip or gabel flashing must be installed. Sealing strips are fastened to the tile bottom using construction silicone. Slide the end cap in from below and screw it into place from above. The following screws form part of the programme: Hipped ridge Royal/Regent/Smart in steel on steel battens, hot dip galvanized screws 4.8x20 Royal/Regent/Smart in steel on wooden battens, hot dip galvanized screws 4.8x35 Ridge piece Screw 4.8x35 c/c max 300 Royal/Regent/Smart in aluminium on wooden battens, aluminium screws 5.5x35 Bend up at angle-cut sheet edge Royal/Regent/Smart in aluminium on steel battens, stainless steel screws 5.5x27 Royal/Regent/Smart in steel on wooden battens, stainless steel screws 4.8x35 Royal/Regent/Smart in steel on steel battens, hot dip galvanized screws 4.8x20 Assembly instructions, Plannja Roof tiles 13

Profiled Assembly instructions Roofing Sheet This section deals with the assembly of Plannja Profiled Roofing Sheet such as Plannja and Plannja Sinus. Assembly instructions for Plannja Roofing Sheet can be found on page 18. It is important to read through the General preparations, roofing section before starting to assemble your Plannja roof. The section provides information and advice on how to measure your roof, what underlying materials are suitable, the choice of batten and batten distances, and much more besides 16 Assembly instructions, Plannja Profiled Roofing Sheet
1. INSTALLATION OF EAVE BATTEN Begin by installing the eave batten in a straight line. Unevenness in the eaves is concealed by the eaves flashing. Read more about the different types of underlay on page 6, and about battens and batten distances on page 8. Allow the sheet to protrude 7 8 mm beyond the eave trim to keep the sheet cleaner and dryer. Eave trim 4. FASTENING Plannja Original fastener always helps to achieve the best results. Screws For best results with steel profiles, use self-drilling, stainless steel or galvanized painted roofing screws with washers. Aluminium profiles must always be attached with aluminium screws, or self-drilling, stainless steel screws. Use a power screwdriver and screw socket. The screws included in the programme are: For fastening to: Kombi batten and Roofing material Renovation batten Wooden batten Steel profiles 4.8x20 4.8x35 2. order of assembly Aluminum 4.8x20 4.8x35 profiles stainless steel screws aluminium screws Lay the sheet from the bottom at the roof s outer edge. Attach the sheet at a right angle to the eave. Sequence as per schematic. 3. INSTALLATION OF PLANNJA ANTI- CONDENSATION COATED SHEET Sheet number 2 must overlap sheet number 1 by at least 200 mm. This also applies to the other end overlaps Plannja s Anti-condensation felt or Anti-condensation coating means that: 1. The underside of the sheet is coated with Anti-condensation felt or Anti-condensation coating that can temporarily absorb condensation. 2. The moisture is ventilated away between the occasions when condensation occurs. In moderate levels of humidity ventilation in the eaves and ventilators at gable apexes can be sufficient, but as a rule we recommend the choice of the special, ventilated ridge. Construction condensation can cause problems of a temporary nature. When installing Plannja Anti-condensation coated sheet it must be screwed into place. Plannja s Anticondensation felt or Anticondensation is recommended when there is a risk of moisture condensing on the underside of the sheet in e.g. uninsulated spaces and shelters. Attach the sheet like this Maximum distance between screw rows is 1.2 metres. Put a screw in every second profile valley in the following places: 0,1 x building width all sheet ends all end overlaps the second lowest batten counting from the eave in battens that are within 1/10th of the building s width, measured from each gable. building width Plannja and Plannja Sinus 18 Otherwise Plannja and Sinus 18 are attached at every third valley and Plannja at every fourth valley. Plannja The rows of screws must be staggered for Plannja Every other row of screws is placed according to the upper markings and the rows in between in the order shown in the figure above. When screwing down every other valley, also begin at position 1. Assembly instructions, Plannja Profiled Roofing Sheet 17
5. Overlap FASTENING AND SEALING Side overlap if there is an underlayment Plannja is screwed into each batten at the overlap. Plannja Screw 6. VALLEY GUTTERS Shown here is an installation with battens alone. For installations with battens and counter battens, see page 8. Alternative 1 A hook clamps is easily made by bending a piece of sheet. Plannja is screwed into each batten at the overlap. Plannja Plannja Sinus 18 is attached at every other valley and is riveted in the profile peak between each batten. Side overlap if underlayment is lacking If batten spacing is equal to or less than 500 mm, a screw must be put in every batten at the overlap. If batten spacing is greater than 500 mm, use a side overlap screw or rivet, max c distance 500 mm. If the roof pitch is less than 14 run a 4 mm bead of sealant along the lower profile s top flange. A 3x10 mm self-adhesive seal strip may also be used. Rivet or screw c/c 300 mm in the side overlap. >150 Valley gutter Seal strip End overlap The end overlap must be at least 200 mm and be above a batten. If the roof pitch is less than 14 and underlayment is lacking, seal the end overlap in the same way as the side overlap and screw the sheet down in every profile valley. The end overlap must be at least 500 mm. If the slope s length exceeds the maximum length in the table below, shape the end overlap such that the upper and lower sheet rows can be slid in relation to each other when expanding/contracting (see fig.). NOTE! The batten must be at least 90 mm or be doubled. Profile valley, bent up Water diversion underlay Hook clamps c/c 400 mm Construction felt Underlay for gutter The overlap on valley gutters must be at least 500 mm. Alternative 2 On roof pitches of less than 14 degrees, installation should take place according to alternative 2. Beads of sealant Profiled roofing sheet Steel profiles Aluminium profiles Max length without movable end overlap 12 m 6 m Eaves, gable and ridge flashings In order to reduce temperature movements it is necessary for all flashings to be fastened without common screws in overlaps, i.e. screws may not pass through both flashings. Overlap 100 mm. Valley gutter Use Plannja valley gutter if the roof has a valley. To be installed before the roofing sheet is laid. Overlap 500 mm. Profile bottoms The profile bottoms must be bent up at ridge and high section connections. If the roof pitch is less than 14 the profile bottoms at the eaves must also be bent to facilitate water run-off. 19 7. Gable trim 9. FLASHING AROUND CHIMNEYS Gable trim Self-drilling screw c/c 300 mm Allow a roofer to deal with the flashings around the chimney. Plannja has flashings that are suitable for use when the chimney is a long way from the ridge. 10. Maintenance Plannja roofing tiles and profiles normally require very little maintenance. Deposits that are not washed away by rain should be removed with a soft brush and water. When joining flashing, cut away the corners on the underlying flashing so that the lower can be slid beneath the upper. The join will then be a better seal and less visible. 8. RIDGE Cut edges and paint damage that occur during installation should be immediately touched up with Plannja touch-up paint. After installation, be careful to remove all drill swarf so that the roofing sheet does not become miscoloured. Factory-painted and hot dip galvanized steel sheet normally requires very little maintenance. Mechanical damage to the surface layer must however be treated with touch-up paint. 21 Trend Assembly instructions This section concerns the assembly of Plannja Trend. Before beginning the installation of your Plannja roof it s important that you read through the General preparations for roofing section. It provides help and advice on how to measure your roof, the kind of substrate to use, suitable materials and a lot more besides. Assembly instructions, Plannja Trend 21
1. Roof measurement Begin by checking roof measurements by measuring the diagonals from corner to corner. If they are not equal, the roof is askew. In this case lay the Plannja Trend so that its lower edge aligns with the eaves. Deviations of mm can be adjusted using the gable flashings. 4. Minimum recommended pitch The minimum recommended pitch for Plannja Trend is 10 (1:6). 5. Transport and storage Correct Always transport and store Plannja Trend roofing sheets in a vertical holder. Also remember to lay Plannja Trend sheets so that they have the same width at both gables. Split sheets of the same width. Whole sheets. Incorrect Storing and transporting Plannja Trend horizontally may cause the roofing sheets to deform. Split sheets. 2. Tools No special tools are required for roof sheet installation. However, a reversible power drill with infinitely variable speed will make work significantly easier. Cut sheets using sheet metal shears or a circular saw. Never use a grinding wheel. The sheet s coating can be damaged by spatter from the wheel 6. Work safety Always follow applicable work safety legislation. 3. Painting Touch up all damage to the sheet s protective coating. After cutting or drilling, remove all metallic residue that may damage the sheet. 22 Assembly instructions, Plannja Trend

Direction of Installation Sheets may be laid from left to right or vice versa. 11. Installation a) Begin by installing the eave flashing. Attach the gutter to the batten closest to the eaves using the bracket screw. b) Plannja Trend must always be attached at right angles to the eaves. Cover width 500 Cover width 500 Plannja Trend 300 Cover width 300 Cover width Substrate for Plannja Trend Use battens, 290 mm centre-to-centre. The final batten should be installed 100 mm from the ridge. Underlayment; refer to page 6. It is also acceptable to lay Plannja Trend directly on to tongue-and-groove planks/ plywood, minimum thickness 17 mm and with underlayment felt of YAP2200 minimum on condition that the roof is sealed and flat enough to allow the sheet metal to be pressed onto the substrate. When installing Plannja Trend width 500 onto battens glue dampening battens in the centre of each sheet from eaves to ridge. Dampening battens may begin from the second lowest batten and end at the second highest batten. The aim is to reduce any noise caused by wind and rain. Batten 45x MM c) Attach the two first and the two last Plannja Trend sheets to each batten. Attach all sheets to the top batten and to the three battens closest to the eaves. Insert the remainder of the screws (4.2 25) through the punched holes in a zig-zag pattern in every other batten. Remember to insert them through the centre of the holes and not to tighten them too hard Plannja Trend shifts a little depending on the weather. Use a ratchet screwdriver for the best possible attachment. When installing directly onto a flat substrate the location and number of screws is equally as important as when installing on battens. 290 MM Roof beam Underlayment 9. Installation screws Installation screws for Plannja Trend: for insertion through the punched holes for attaching the ventilated ridge support to Plannja Trend and for attaching the ridge plate to the ridge support for attaching to the first batten. 4.2x25 d) Attaching the sheets using our click system. Lay the new sheet on the first sheet with an overlap and tighten the screws until the sheets are securely fastened. Remember to ensure that the bottom edge is straight. Screw (4.2 25) it to the batten closest to the eaves. 4.2x25 4.8x20 4.2x25 4.8x35 Assembly instructions, Plannja Trend 23
e) Attach each sheet using a screw at the eaves, max 20 mm from the click lock. Attach the remaining sheets as described above. g) End overlap Because it is extremely difficult to join the sheets we do not recommend the use of grooved Plannja Trend on roofs where max sheet length exceeds 10 metres. 26 Modern Assembly instructions This section deals with the assembly of Plannja Modern. Before you begin the assemble of your Plannja roof is it important to read through the General Preparations, roof laying section. The section provides information and advice on how to measure your roof, what underlying materials are suitable, and much more besides. 26 Assembly instructions, Plannja Modern
1. UNDERLAYMENT 3. ORDER OF ASSEMBLY Plannja Modern always requires some form of underlay cover and may either be installed on battens or directly on an even underlay. Both battens and counter battens are necessary when laying on an even underlay. Plannja Modern has a wide profile valley which means that unevenness may occur on the wide surface. If you want the profile crowns to be symmetrically distributed across the roof first measure the length of the roof in order to determine dimension A for the first profile crown. 2. installing battens and eave TRIM Begin by installing the battens closest to the eaves in a straight line. Unevenness in the eaves is concealed by the eave trim. The batten distance closest to the free end of Plannja Modern (at the eaves, ridge and high section connection) and at any overlap may be max 150 mm. Otherwise the max batten distance is 400 mm. Read more about various types of underlay on page 6, along with the choice of batten and batten distances on page 8. Note that the width of the batten must at least be 70 mm. Lay the sheet from the bottom from the edge of the roof. Attach the sheet at right angles to the eaves. Sequence as per schematic. RIDGE EAVES Affix a resilient strip under the centre of each profile valley from the eaves to the ridge. The resilient strip may begin from the second lowest batten and end at the second highest. The aim is to reduce any noise that may be caused by wind and rain. Sheet number 2 must overlap sheet number 1 by at least 200 mm. 4. FASTENING Resilient strip 4.8x35 4.8x35 4.8x35 used for profile valleys and flashing. 4.8x65 used for profile crowns. Assembly instructions, Plannja Modern 27
Put a screw in every profile crown at every batten, or c/c 400 mm if installing directly on an even underlay. Eave trim 2 screw/profile valley 1 screw/profile crown End overlap The end overlap must be at least 200 mm and be above a batten. If the pitch is 10º 14º the end overlap must be at least 500 mm and be sealed in the same manner as the side overlap. If the slope length exceeds 12 m the end overlaps must be shaped so that the upper and lower sheet rows can slide in relation to one another during temperature movements. Eaves, gable and ridge flashings In order to reduce temperature movements it is necessary for all flashings to be fastened without common screws in overlaps, i.e. screws may not pass through both flashings. Overlap 100 mm. Valley gutter Use Plannja valley gutter if the roof has a valley. Install it before laying the roof sheet and overlap by 500 mm. The profile bottoms must be bent up at ridge and high section connections. GABLE ALT Gable TRIM Prile is cut/separated and profile valley bent up Put two screws in every profile valley into the batten closest to the eaves and at each end overlap; see fig. below. Fixed end overlap. 2 screw/profile crown Prile is cut/separated and profile valley bent up 2 screw/profile valley GABLE ALT. 1 Gable trim Self-drilling screw c/c 300 mm GABLE ALT Overlaps FASTENING AND SEALING Side overlap 7. A 3x10 mm self-adhesive seal strip may also be used. 28 Assembly instructions, Plannja Modern
Assembly instructions Roofing sheet This section deals with the assembly of Plannja Roofing Sheet. Before you begin the assemble of your Plannja Roof it is important to read through the General Preparations, roof laying section. The section provides information and advice on how to measure your roof, what underlying materials are suitable, and much more besides. Assembly instructions, Plannja roofing sheet 29
1. UNDERLAY Plannja Roofing Sheet without grooves Is different to other profile sheet in that it requires an even support structure and underlay felt. It can be installed on battens with underlayment but there is a great risk that the strips will show through, which is why we recommend the choice of Pannplåt with stiffener; see below. Plannja Roofing Sheet with grooves Can be installed directly on battens. Max batten distance with regard to sheet walkability is 500 mm. Read more about the different types of underlay and choosing battens and batten distances. 4. FASTENING Plannja Original fastener always helps to achieve the best results. Attach Plannja roofing sheet like this Screw Plannja roofing sheet c/c 500 mm in every profile valley with screw 4,8x35 or in every profile top with screw 4,8x65, but always one screw in each profile valley at the bottom of the eaves and ridge. Screw Plannja roofing sheet with stiffener to each batten and through each profile valley or profile top. 2. INSTALLING EAVES TRIM 5. Overlap FASTENING AND SEALING Begin by installing the eaves trim in a straight line. Water diversion underlay Ca 25 mm at high point 3. order of assembly Lay the sheet from the bottom at the roof s outer edge. Attach the sheet at a right angle to the eave. Sequence as per schematic. If the roof pitch is run a 4 mm bead of sealant along the lower profile s top flange. A 3x10 mm self-adhesive seal strip may also be used. Rivet or screw c/c 500 mm in the side overlap. End overlap The end overlap must be at least 200 mm. If the roof pitch is 10 14, seal the end overlap in the same manner as the side overlap. The end overlap must be at least 500 mm. If the slope s length exceeds the maximum length in the table below, shape the end overlap such that the upper and lower sheet rows can be slid in relation to each other during temperature movements. Roofing sheet Steel profiles Max length without movable end overlap 12 m Plannja Roofing Sheet Side overlap Fasten Plannja Roofing Sheet in the profile valley c/c 500 mm, or at each batten as illustrated. Eaves, gable and ridge trims In order to prevent temperature movements it is necessary for all flashings to be fastened without common screws in overlaps, i.e. screws may not pass through both flashings. Overlap 100 mm. Sheet number 2 must overlap sheet number 1 by at least 200 mm. This also applies to the other end overlaps. Valley gutter Use Plannja valley gutter if the roof has a valley. To be installed before the roofing sheet is laid. Overlap 500 mm. Profile valleys The profile bottoms must be bent up at ridge and high section connections. If the roof pitch is the profile bottoms at the eaves must also be bent to facilitate water run-off. 30 Assembly instructions, Plannja roofing sheet
6. VALLEY GUTTERS 8. RIDGE A hook clamps is easily made by bending a piece of sheet. Profile valley, bent up Ridge trim Seal strip Water diversion underlay 9. FLASHING AROUND CHIMNEYS Allow a roofer to deal with the flashings around the chimney. 10. Maintenance Water diversion underlay >150 Valley gutter Construction felt Underlay for gutter The overlap on valley gutters must be at least 500 mm. Hook clamps (bent piece of sheet) c/c 400 mm Plannja roofing tiles and wall cladding normally require very little maintenance. Deposits that are not washed away by rain should be removed with a soft brush and water. Cut edges and paint damage that occur during installation should be immediately touched up with Plannja touch-up paint. After installation, be careful to remove all drill swarf so that the roofing sheet does not become miscoloured. Factory-painted and hot dip galvanized steel sheet normally requires very little maintenance. Mechanical damage to the surface layer must however be treated with touch-up paint. For further information on how to take care of your Plannja roof, refer to Care and maintenance on page Gable trim Gable trim Self-drilling screw c/c 300 mm When joining flashing, cut away the corners on the underlying flashing so that the lower can be slid beneath the upper. The join will then be a better seal and less visible. Assembly instructions, Plannja roofing sheet 31

Wall Assembly instructions cladding This section deals with the assembly of classic Plannja sheet suitable for installation as wall cladding, such as Plannja 45F, Plannja 35 and Plannja Sinusprofil. We have chosen to show how installation takes place without going too deeply into the actual wall framing structure. But we do recommend that you read through the installation instructions first before you install the sheeting on the walls. Assembly instructions, Plannja Profiled Wall Cladding 33
PURLIN DISTANCE AND OVERLAPS Frame structure and method will vary depending on the type of wall Plannja sheeting will be attached to. Purlin distance On insulated wall the purlin distance is adapted to the format of the insulation. On uninsulated walls the purlin distance is limited to 1.5 m. The stud distance can be extended to 2.1 m for Plannja 35 in steel. Side overlaps: Steel sheet is joined c 600 with hot dip zinc, painted 4.8x20 screws, or rivets. Aluminium profiles are fixed c 600 with stainless steel, painted 4.8x20 screw, painted aluminium 5.5x20 screws or rivets. If purlin distance is less or equal to 600 mm, no special side overlap join is required. End overlaps: End overlaps must be 100 mm and supported by a horizontal purlin behind. If total sheet length exceeds 6 metres in the case of aliminium sheet, or 12 metres for steel sheet, the end overlaps must be shaped such that the sheet ends can slide in relation to each other during temperature movements. Illustrated below are examples of solutions for moveable end overlaps on wooden battens. Attach the sheet like this: Put a screw into every profile valley in Plannja 35, Sinus 51, Plannja 15 and Plannja 19, and a screw in every other profile valley in Plannja , Plannja and Sinus 18 at the following places: all sheet ends all end overlaps in both directions at outer corners within a zone that is equivalent to 1/10th of the buildings width In other places the following applies: Fasten Plannja 35 in every profile valley as illustrated below. If the narrow profile crowns on Plannja 35 are turned outwards, fasten as close to the profile web as possible. Fasten Plannja in every third profile valley as shown below: Fasten Plannja in every fourth profile valley. The rows of screws are displaced so that every other row of screws is placed according to the upper markings and the rows in between in the order shown in the figure above. FASTENING Fastening with screws Use self-drilling, painted screws with washers. Use a variable power screwdriver and screw socket. There are screws with small diameter screw heads for Sinus sheeting. The screws included in the programme are: Strip Aluminium profiles Steel profiles Steel strip Stainless steel screw Galv. screw <1.25 mm 4.8x20 4.8x20 Stainless steel screw 4.8x20 Steel strip Stainless steel screw Stainless steel screw >1.0 mm 5.5x22 5.5x22 Wooden strip Aluminium screw Galv. screw 5.5x35 4.8x35 Stainless steel screw Stainless steel screw 4.8x35 4.8x35 Fasten Plannja 19 in every other profile valley as illustrated below. Fasten Plannja Sinus 18 in every third profile valley. Fasten Plannja Sinus 51 in every second profile valley. Maintenance Plannja roofing tiles and wall cladding normally require very little maintenance. Those deposits that are not washed away by rain can be removed with a soft brush and water. Cut edges and paint damage that occur during installation should be immediately touched up with Plannja touch-up paint. After installation, take care to brush away all drill swarf so that the roofing sheet does not become discoloured. For further information on how to care for your Plannja sheet, refer to Care and maintenance on page Assembly instructions, Plannja Profiled Wall Cladding
Assembly instructions Rainwater system This section deals with the assembly of Plannja Rainwater system, gutters, downpipes, brackets, pipe bracket and other components. Before you begin the installation of Plannja Rainwater system it is important to read through the General Preparations, Rainwater system section. The section provides information and advice on how to measure your roof, how many downpipes you will need, the number of gutter brackets, drop and much more besides. Assembly instructions, Plannja Rainwater system 35
GENERAL PREPARATIONS, RAINWATER SYSTEM Measure the roof Measure the length and breadth of each half of the roof. If the area is less than 50 m 2, use gutters with a width of 100 mm and pipes with a diameter of 75 or 90 mm. If the area is m 2, use gutters with a width of 125 mm and pipes with a diameter of 90 mm. There are gutters with a width of 150 mm and downpipes with diameters of 100 mm for roofs with even larger areas. Number of downpipes Count on each downpipe being able to handle a gutter length of 10 meters. Houses with hipped roofs should always be fitted with two downpipes per long side and a gutter with a width of 125 m. Locate the downpipes on L-shaped houses as illustrated. Use gutters that are suitable for the roof area. Gable roof Hipped roof L-shaped roof Location of downpipes Begin by measuring where the gutter brackets will be attached. Then install the gutter brackets, gutters and downpipes. How to measure: For distances of 10 metres, one downpipe is enough. The brackets are distributed as illustrated in fig. 1 below, and are marked 1, 2, 3 and so forth. Install the first and last brackets 10 cm from the edge of the roof. For distances greater than 10 metres, 2 downpipes are required. The brackets are distributed as illustrated in fig. 2 below and are marked 1, 2, 3 and so forth. Install brackets 1 1 about 30 cm from the centre and the last brackets around 10 cm from the edge of the roof. Screw short brackets directly into the fascia board. If the fascia board is not installed plumb the short bracket may be bent or a specially adapted short bracket for 27 pitches may be used or either of the two compact fittings mm Downpipe Slope mm Downpipe Single slope House length m 2 downpipes Example: 20 m/0.6 m = 34 brackets 100 mm House length up to 10 m 1 downpipe Example: 10 m/0.6 m=18 brackets 100 mm Slope Downpipe Tools There are no extraordinary tools required for installing Plannja Rainwater system, just a hammer, pliers, screwdriver, a file, ruler, plumb line and a bracket bender. Bracket benders can be rented from your local hardware store. 36 General preparations, Plannja Rainwater system
GUTTER BRACKETS GUTTERS A gutter bracket is required every 60 cm to support the gutter. Install the gutter sloping toward the drainpipe; the slope must be 5 mm/m. Long brackets Bend the long brackets so that the gutter has an incline. Do the following: Mark the base line as illustrated, place the brackets together and mark the base line on the first and last brackets. Roof length/5 mm per metre gives the total incline, which is marked on the last bracket. Draw a line between the base line 1, 2, 3, 4 etc and the incline measurement as illustrated. Number the brackets and bend them using a bracket bender. Fasten the brackets with screws Example Building length 10 metres Incline/m 5 mm = 50 mm First mark out how far from the end of the gutter to place the downpipe. Make two angled cuts so that the opening is around 10 cm. Bend the edges down into the hole to improve the run-off. Slide the folded edge into the gutter outlet. Slide the outlet toward the back and fold over the tabs, The gutter s rounded lip must face outwards. Install the universal end plate by twisting it into the gutter s rounded lip. Apply a bead of sealant and press the end plate into the gutter. Hammer the cover into position. Short brackets and Compact brackets Mark the slope with the aid of line (cord). Screw the hooks into the fascia board. Screw into fascia board Fittings for Compact bracket There are two different kinds of fitting. The fittings are adapted without special tools to roof pitch before installation. Compact fittings Can be used for 8 45 angles on the fascia board. Screw the fittings to the fascia board, adjust the angle and fix it with the pin supplied. Installation on roof underlay Line Compact fitting Cb2 The fitting can be installed on the roof or the fascia board. Adjust the angle by bending the fitting and fixing it with the screw supplied. Then fit the Compact bracket to the fitting. The Combi end plate is installed by pushing it onto the gutter. The end plate is secured as illustrated. Finish off by folding the gutter end plate s free point in with a twist of the thumb (see fig.). Cut the gutter to the correct length and hang it in the brackets. Press the gutter to the front edge of the brackets and twist over the front lip. Then twist the gutter down and lock it into the rear lip. If you are using Plannja U-brackets or Compact brackets, put the gutter into the front of the bracket. Then press down the gutter so that it is fixed into position by the stop tab at the back of the bracket. Installation on fascia board Join gutters using gutter joins. Slide the gutters together. Position the gutter join on the back edge and press it onto the gutter. Fold the lock down onto the gutter using the palm of the hand. Assembly instructions, Plannja Rainwater system 37
STRAIGHT CONNECTOR outlet The length of the straight connector the pipe between the two elbows is measured as follows. Press the upper pipe elbow (1) onto the gutter outlet and align it with the intended drainpipe location. 1 Hold up the lower elbow (2) and align it with the upper elbow. The distance between the elbow and the wall should 2 be 35 mm. Straight connector Adjust the elbows so that they align with each other. Use the rule as a straight edge. Measure the distance between the elbows and add 10 cm. The straight connector is available in 0.5 metre lengths with shrunk ends. Cut downpipes can also be used for buildings with deep eaves. Pipe bracket Outlet The outlet is installed when the downpipe is not connected to a surface water pipe. Attach the diverter with screws or pop rivets. Extension pipe, drain trap, self-cleaning leaf trap, connectors Drain traps and leaf traps prevent trash from ending up in the surface water drains. Drain traps are fitted with or without extension pipes. Self-cleaning leaf traps are installed directly between the downpipe and surface water drain. Connectors are available for different dimensions of surface water drainage pipes. Drain diverter, drain strainer The drain diverter is used between the drainpipe and the surface water drain. A drain strainer is installed directly into the surface water drain to prevent trash from blocking it. Pipe bracket Install the pipe bracket 10 cm below the lower elbow. Pipe brackets are available for brick and wooden walls. Pre-drill holes in stone/brick walls for the strap pins. Drill into the mortar, not into the brick. The distance between pipe brackets should be max 2 metres. Fit the pipe components together and connect them to the gutter outlet. Check that the downpipe is straight and adjust the length as necessary. Foldable diverter, leaf strainer with rainwater branch Do you want to collect rainwater? Install a foldable diverter onto the downpipe or connect a rainwater branch pipe to a hose so that water can be piped to flowers and shrubs. ACCESSORIES The wood pipe bracket is screwed onto the wall. The stone pipe bracket is hung onto the pin and is fastened by bending it around the protruding pin and the lower edge of the pin plate. The downpipe is fitted into the strap and locked by turning the lock button a half turn clockwise with a screwdriver. To remove, open the pipe bracket by turning the lock button anti-clockwise a half turn and then insert the screwdriver into one of the detachment holes in order to release the button. Drainpipe branch The branch is used for draining several roof via the same downpipe. Overflow protection The overflow protection prevents water overflowing at inside corners. Also available as straight overflow protection. 38 Assembly instructions, Plannja Rainwater system
Flashings Assembly instructions & fittings In this section you will find out how to assembly upper and lower window flashings and gable flashings. Window flashings and gable flashings are available in steel and aluminium and in different colours to suit your house. Window flashings are pre-drilled for nailing every 100 mm. installing window flashings Drip cap Installed above the window case. Prevents water forcing its way into the structure. The drip cap is screwed or nailed every 10 cm. Installation tips Cut to correct length, 30 mm longer than the groove in the window frame. Angle cut a notch at the front and back edges. Bend up an approx 10 mm tab at both ends and fold in the back edge as illustrated. Press the back edge into the frame groove. Screw or nail the sill every 10 cm. 1 2 Window sill Installed in the window frame s routed groove. Prevents water and snow from forcing its way behind the façade cladding. See alternative below. 3 Bend up 4 installing gable flashings When joining gable flashing cut away t he corners of the underlying flashing so that the lower can be slid under the upper. The join will then be a better seal and less visible. Assembly instructions, Plannja Flashings & Fittings 39
Renovating fibre cement roofs Assembly instructions Fibre cement roofs Existing fibre cement roofing can either be covered over or demolished. An advantage of covering it is that there is no need for demolition, which can be a health hazard if the roofing cracks and causes dust. If a contractor is used for the work and the sheets cannot be taken down whole, the contractor must apply for a permit from the competent authority; cf. below. The work must be carried out using special protective equipment. According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority training is required for all asbestos handling. A permit is required if holes need to be drilled/machined. The sheets must always be disposed of in a special manner; check with the sanitary department in your town. Another advantage with allowing fibre cement to remain is that it can serve as a condensation and run-off barrier so that the risk of rain getting in during the renovation period is avoided. The disadvantage is that the fibre cement remains in the structure, which makes future demolition more difficult. In addition, construction work becomes a little more complicated. The conditions for keeping the old roof as an inner roof is that the old trusses and beams are in satisfactory condition, that the fibre cement sheets are walkable and sufficiently watertight, and if screws are to remain, that these are fully removable. Plannja has three methods for renovating fibre cement roofs known as methods A, B and C. Method A means that treating the sheeting is avoided and it is especially suitable when it is to be covered by Plannja roofing tile sheet. The method is described below. Method C has the same area of use and is simplest, but it entails drilling in the fibre cement, which brings the risk of spreading asbestos fibres. If a contractor is used for the work he must apply for a permit with the competent authority, and the work must be carried out using protective equipment. If the house owner carries out the work, the use of a filtering face piece with particle filter class P3 is still recommended. One condition for the use of method C is that there is a sealing layer beneath the fibre cement to prevent fibres getting into the loft. The method is described below. If the roofing sheets do not contain fibre cement, method C is simplest and most preferable. Method B also means that treating the fibre cement is avoided, but it is best suited for covering with profiled steel sheet. Plannja s ABC of fibre cement renovation A: ROOFING TILES OR PROFILED SHEET ON BATTENS AND COUNTER BATTENS Plannja lock washers, battens and counter battens This method is designed for roofing tile sheet and profiled sheet as a roof covering above the fibre cement. The new roof is fastened using patented washers that are fastened with the old fibre concrete roof screws or with new screws as replacements for nails. A really smart Plannja solution where the work is carried out efficiently and without protective gear. No permit is required from the authorities. 1 Loosen the existing roof screw a little. We recommend Plannja Combi battens but wooden battens may also be used. Fasten flashings, 4 Fasten the lock washers gutter brackets, 3 under the screws. and roof guards. 2 Use Plannja steel purlin or place wooden counter battens zigzag on either side of the roof screw. 40 Assembly instructions, Renovating fibre cement roofs
B: PROFILED SHEET ON BATTENS Using Plannja support plates and battens The method is specially designed for safe, rational use of profiled roofing sheet as a surface material. The new roof is fastened using patented washers that are fastened with the old fibre concrete roof screws or with new screws as replacements for nails. No permit is required from the authorities. An innovative Plannja solution where the work is carried out efficiently and without protective gear. Loosen the existing 1 roof screw a little. Fasten the 4 Plannja Combi batten or wooden batten to the support plates. Fasten fittings, flashing, gutter brackets, roofing sheet and roof guards. 2 Hook the support plates under the screws. 3 C: Plannja counter battens and Kombi battens for fibre cement renovation Using Plannja counter battens and Combi battens for fibre cement renovation The method is suitable for Plannja roofing tile sheet and profiled sheet. A new steel counter batten is attached using self-drilling screws through the fibre cement profile valley into the supporting structure. The rubber strip at the bottom edge is intended to collect any drill dust when fastening the screws. This method requires permission from the competent authority and may only be used when such permission is granted. Special protective equipment is necessary for attaching the counter batters. Fasten fittings, flashing, gutter brackets roofing sheet and roof guard. 3 A Z-section steel counter batten is fastened using self-drilling screws through the old roof. Fibre concrete dust is collected in a rubber strip during the drilling phase. Rubber strip 1 2 We recommend the use of Plannja Kombi battens. Wooden battens are used at the bottom for fastening gutter brackets. Assembly instructions, Renovating fibre cement roofs 41
