2 Saunas relaxation for body and soul The sauna has a remarkable ability to bring out the best in us humans. Visit a sauna suite at a hotel or in public bathing facilities and you re almost certain to meet people who are friendly, relaxed and willing to chat. Maybe it s because, once we ve discarded the outward signs of success and status, deep down we re all very much the same. So there we sit, perfect strangers, happily exchanging opinions about whatever is dearest to our heart. Today, installing a sauna at home is no longer beyond the reach of most families. Tylö sauna rooms come in a wide choice of sizes and designs from small cabins you can integrate into your existing bathroom to large, luxuriously appointed rooms with plenty of space for the whole family to relax in style, or to host a sauna get-together for friends and relatives. Whatever Tylö model you choose, you can be sure of an investment that brings lasting enjoyment because there are many occasions all day long, throughout the week, season after season, when a sauna is simply the only way to relax, refresh and rejuvenate both body and soul. Not that we re encouraging you to refrain from other activities, of course. Quite the opposite. 3 Quality is the word Building a sauna is more complex than it sounds. Saunas need to be able to cope with both dry heat and clouds of steam. Tylö saunas are built for all kinds of bathing: dry saunas, wet saunas, steam saunas (Tylarium) and herbal saunas. So Tylö sauna timbers need to withstand extremes from searing high temperatures and a low relative humidity under 10% to the more temperate climate of a steam sauna with 60% humidity at around 50 C. This makes great demands on the timber we choose, and that is why Tylö selects only the very finest qualities of spruce, aspen, cedar, North American alder, obeche and pine just a few examples of the wood we use to make a Tylö sauna. But you need more than merely the right kind of wood to build a first-class sauna. You need technical expertise and skilled craftsmen with an innate feeling for what sauna bathing is all about. That is why Tylö saunas are built only by accomplished sauna engineers, with all the essential components heaters, climate control units, etc. manufactured in Tylö s own modern carpentry and metal shops, or in our special units for plastics and electronics. For decades Tylö has been widely recognised as the world s leading sauna manufacturer, and today for many people Tylö is saunas. In Swedish surveys, 80 percent of interviewees connected saunas with the Tylö name, and for 90 percent of people within the trade, Tylö was synonymous with high quality. 8 Glazed sections Glazed wall sections add a sensation of space and light to the sauna at the same time as they enable bathers to keep an eye on what is going on outside. Now it s easier than ever to create a unique sauna with a special charm and appeal all of its own. The thermally insulated sections have tempered glass windows, and are exquisitely panelled inside and out with your choice of either Grade A closegrained, northern Swedish spruce or American cedar. The layouts on pages 1 and 13 show which walls can be replaced with glazed sections. Optional: Mullions, please see below. All glazed sections, verandas and the sauna door DW-1 can be complemented with mullions on the outside a simple, yet appealing touch that adds extra character. 9 Sauna doors The importance of choosing the right sauna door cannot be over-emphasised. For safety s sake, a sauna door should never be fitted with a latch or open inwards. Nor should it have self-closing hinges or be difficult to open. Regrettably, there are still some poorly designed doors on the market which increase energy consumption and can, in extreme cases, cause scorched panelling. A high quality construction and the right design are essential if a sauna door is to work well year after year. Tylö doors are specially manufactured to withstand extreme variations in temperature between the inside and outside surfaces of the door without warping or twisting. They can be hung to open left or right, and come complete with a sturdy frame of dovetailed laminated wood, two handles and a child-safe magnetic catch. DW-1 DW-1 with mullions DW- DW-1 has one large window in tinted, tempered safety glass and beautiful spruce panelling on both sides. Optional mullions (see page 8) are available for fitting to the outside of the window. DW- has two windows and first-class spruce panelling inside and out. DW- Cedar, as above, but with cedar panelling. DGM-63/DGM-7/DGM-7 H are all manufactured in tinted, tempered safety glass which lets in light and enables bathers to keep an eye on what is going on outside. Spruce frame and handles. 19 The best way to enjoy a sauna Traditional sauna bathing (dry and wet saunas) very sauna starts with a shower. Afterwards, scrubbed clean and armed with a towel to sit on, you step into the sauna. Ladle a little water over the hot stones now and then, setting the air quivering with heat and feeling the warmth penetrate deep into your skin. Once you begin to perspire heavily, it s time for another visit to the shower. Now your pores are open and you can wash yourself really clean. Then return to the sauna to relax and unwind, emerging occasionally to cool down with an invigorating shower. Round off by pouring more water over the sauna stones before leaving for a final shower. Wet saunas are best enjoyed at temperatures of C in a relative humidity of 0 35%. If you prefer a dry sauna, without sprinkling water on the stones, humidity is only 5 10% and you can increase the temperature above 90 C.
