2 The most common type of entry devices are cylindrical locksets and mortise locksets. Cylindrical Knob Cylindrical Lever Typical cylindrical lockset cylinder Cylindrical 2-1/8 Hole Cylindrical locksets are installed in wood or metal doors through a standard size (2-1/8 ) hole bored in the door. The round knob design does not meet ADA accessibility requirements and is quickly being replaced by lever design locksets. Nearly all cylindrical locksets will fit into a standard 2-1/8 diameter hole cutout in the door. There are two standard backsets, 2-3/8 and 2-3/4. The backset is the measurement from the edge of the door to the center of the lock hole. Most exterior doors use a 2-3/4 backset. The 2-3/8 is most frequently use in residential applications for interior doors. Lever design locksets are often handed. You must designate the direction the lever points when installed on the door. It will be either left or right handed. Mortise locks can be supplied with an optional built-in deadbolt Escutcheon plate is optional. Mortise design locksets are installed in a rectangular cavity that has been bored into wood doors or welded into metal doors. A standard prepped door does not have any holes pre-bored into the surface. 3 What s a Cylinder? The simplest and most descriptively accurate definition is that the cylinder is the part that you put the key into and turn to activate the lock mechanism. There are 3 basic types of cylinders used on modern locking systems: Mortise cylinder, Rim cylinder and Lockset cylinder. Rim cylinders are universally interchangeable. You will need to designate the keyway for your system. (i.e.,yale GA, Sargent LC, Corbin 59A1 etc.) Rim cylinders are most commonly used on exit bars as well as surface mounted deadbolts and nightlatches. Deadbolt Nightlatch Mortise cylinders are interchangeable throughout the industry in diameter and threading. There are several lengths, with 1-1/8 being most common for mortise lock applications. You will need to know the manufacturer of the lock device so that the correct tailpiece is put on the cylinder. Lockset cylinders are use on cylindrical locks and are almost always not interchangeable, even within a specific manufacturer. You will need to know the manufacturer and the model number of the lockset in order to get a replacement cylinder. Interchangeable Core Cylinders Interchangeable core systems permit you to replace the cylinder in a lock by using a special core removal Control key. While all the major manufacturers make interchangeable core systems, each has its own design. You cannot mix different interchangeable core systems. Most manufacturers do however make available most models of their locks modified to accept Best style IC cores. 5 Deadbolt Latchbolt Toggle Mortise Lock Functions Mortise lock functions are a bit more complicated because there can be two different locking devices built into the lock case: the latchbolt and the deadbolt. In addition, some locking functions are activated by a toggle on the edge of the lock. Below are just the most common mortise lock functions. For a complete listing consult an ANSI manual. ANSI-F01 - Passage Latch retracted by either lever. Non-locking function. No deadbolt. ANSI-F04 - Office Latch retracted by either lever unless outside lever is locked by toggle on lock edge. Key outside retracts latch. No deadbolt. ANSI-F05 - Classroom Lock Latch retracted by either lever unless outside lever is locked by key outside. Key outside locks or unlocks outside lever only. Inside lever always operative. No deadbolt. ANSI-F07 - Storeroom or Service Latch retracted by lever inside or key outside. Outside lever rigid at all times, requires key to open. No deadbolt. ANSI-F09 - Public Entrance Latch retracted by either lever unless outside lever is locked by key inside. Key outside retracts latchbolt. No deadbolt. ANSI-F12 - Dwelling Entrance Lock Latch retracted by either lever unless outside lever is locked by toggle in lock front. Deadbolt operated by key outside, turn lever inside. Key outside retracts both latch and deadbolt. When deadbolt is projected, outside lever is automatically locked. Operating inside lever automatically retracts latch and deadbolt with outside lever remaining locked. ANSI-F13 - Dormitory and Storeroom Latchbolt retracted by either lever. Deadbolt operated from outside by key, inside by turn lever. When deadbolt is projected, outside lever automatically locked. 25 function only - Operating inside lever automatically retracts latchbolt and deadbolt and unlocks outside lever. ANSI-F14 - Storeroom Lock Latchbolt retracted by either lever. Deadbolt operated from either side by key. Inside lever does not retract deadbolt. ANSI-F15 - Hotel-Motel Guard bolt deadlocks latchbolt. Latchbolt retracted by key outside, lever inside. Outside lever always rigid. Projecting deadbolt from inside by turn lever or emergency key outside when door is closed, shuts out all keys except emergency key. Inside lever retracts latchbolt and deadbolt simultaneously. Indicator button available on order. When deadbolt is projected by inside turn lever, button cannot be pushed in (indicating room is occupied). 5

6 Exit Devices Uncomplicated Rim Device Concealed Vertical Rod Surface Mounted Vertical Rod Mortise Device There are four basic styles of modern exit bar devices. Rim The entire device is mounted on the surface of the door with a latch projecting out the end. Surface Mounted Vertical Rod Similar to the rim design, the entire mechanism is mounted to the surface of the door. Rods mounted on the surface project latches both into the over head and into the floor. Mortise The latching mechanism is mortised into a precut channel in the door. Concealed Vertical Rod Rods are hidden in a preformed channel within the door that project latches into the overhead and into the floor. All four styles are also available in the older Crossbar style. Crossbar Device Installation tips: The mortise and concealed vertical rod designs need to have channels inside the door, therefore they aren t suitable for retrofitting to existing doors. Stick with the surface mounted rim or surface mounted vertical rod designs for retrofits. The vertical rod devices are more secure because they latch the doors at both the top and bottom. On doors where there is no entrance necessary such as emergency exits, you don t have to install any trim. You ll save money by ordering the devices less trim. With the exception of the mortise design, most exit devices use a rim cylinder. Mortise design devices use a mortise cylinder. The old crossbar styles are rarely used anymore. They often project out into the walk area so far that they interfere with handicap requirements. Before you order a device, you ll need to know the width of the door and the height if ordering a vertical rod device. Most rim devices can be field cut a couple of inches to fit non-standard doors. And the rods on vertical rod devices can usually be field shortened. Most surface mounted devices are non-handed so they can be mounted on either left hand or right hand doors. Exit Device Trim Any mechanisms on the exterior of the door such as handles and cylinders are collectively known as trim. 7 Exit devices equipped with alarms are common on retail applications DOGGING Built-in alarm device Dogging Key The phrase dogging as associated with exit devices has nothing to do with your pooch. It indicates that the exit bar can be dogged (fixed) in the unlocked position. This normally is done with an allen type wrench and is a very common option. There are special application exit devices where the entire device is mortised into the surface of the door making the opening clear of all projections. Touch senstive bars can be used on electromagnetic and electric strike applications. Exit Device Electric Strike Now here s a really great idea. Several manufacturers have created an electric strike for surface mounted exit devices. The strike is totally self contained and can be mounted with very little jamb modification. Gravity Door Coordinator If you ve got a set of double doors without a center post, you ll probably need a coordinator to prevent the active door closing until the inactive door is closed. 7

8 Surface Mounted Concealed (floor) Garden State Hardware Wholesalers Door Closers Modern door closers fall into two broad categories, surface mounted and concealed. Surface mounted are by far the most common. They re used extensively on all types of construction. Concealed closers are mortised into the overhead or floor and are usually limited to exterior doors that get heavy usage. The size of a closer does not refer to a dimension. It indicates the closing power of the unit. Closers are usually sized from 1 to 6, with a 3 or 4 being the most common size. The more expensive closers are adjustable throughout their listed size range. Most door closers today actually have two different speed ranges that should be adjusted independently. The sweep speed controls how quickly the door will close from the open position to within about 10 o of the closed position. The latching speed controls the speed of the door during the last few degrees of closing. It allows the lock device on the door to latch properly and prevents the door from slamming. If the door is a handicap access, you may want to have a closer with delayed action. This slows the door closing speed between its full open position and approximately 70 o closed position. Factors To Consider When Selecting Door Closers Some variables to consider when choosing the size, style and options for door closers: The width of the door. The weight of the door. Frequency of traffic. Wind conditions. Hand of the door. Handicap access. 9 These are the most common methods for mounting closers. Since method 1 puts the closer on the exterior of the door, it shouldn t be used on outside doors. Exposure to the elements could have an adverse affect on the unit. Use a parallel arm mounting instead. 1 Regular Arm Mounting Most common mounting, providing the greatest closing efficiency. Closer is mounted on the pull side, with the arm perpendicular to the face of the door. Arm bracket is attached to the door frame. Requires a 2 wide top rail. 2 Top Jamb Mounting Parallel Arm Mounting Will accommodate a reveal up to 3 on Allows inside application of closer on out-swinging 180 o opening and 3¾ on o doors. Closer is mounted on the push side, with the openings. Closer is mounted on the arm parallel to the face of the door. Door Closer Options There are a couple of options you might want to consider when ordering door closers: Backcheck and Hold-Open. Backcheck slows a door during the opening cycle by providing cushioned resistance as someone pushes it open. Its use should protect people and objects behind the door as well as preventing damage to a wall. It will also help in those windy locations, preventing a gust of wind from pulling the door out of someone s hand and slamming it against a wall or ripping the hardware out of the door or frame. The hold-open option allows you to keep the door in the open position without the use of an additional device such as an overhead holder or kickdown holder. 15 Lock hardware can not project into clear opening. Barrier-Free Design ADA Guidelines ADA Minimum Opening Requirements An accessible door must provide a 2-8 CLEAR space for passage. This may be provided with a 2-10 wide door but more often a 3-0 wide door is needed. Nothing can project from the frame or door into this space. This means that you must allow clearance for things like the frame stop, the lock strike plate and the lock handle or exit bar device. Approach Swing-Clear Hinges Sometimes just replacing a door hinge with a swing-clear hinge will make a door opening ADA compliant. When used on doors 1-3/8 or 1-3/4 thick it requires only 95 to fully clear the opening. 15

20 Hinge Selection Guide Full Mortise Hinge The full mortise hinge is the most common application use for hollow metal or wood doors. It will permit the door to swing 180. Available with or without bearings and with up to five knuckles. Rounded corners is an option used frequently on residential applications. Half Mortise Hinge Use on hollow metal or wood doors with a channel iron frame. Will permit 180 door swing. Full Surface Hinge Use on fire labeled wood doors or metal-clad wood doors with channel iron frame. On fire labeled wood doors, the door leaf is hung using a back plate with grommet nuts and bolts. Another popular application for this type of hinge is a tubular steel gate hung on a channel iron frame. Permits 180 swing. Half Surface Hinge Use on fire labeled wood door or metal-clad wood door with hollow metal frame. On fire labeled wood doors, the door leaf is hung using a back plate with grommet nuts and bolts. Will permit 180 swing. Spring Hinge Some door or frame applications make door closers impractical. An alternative closing device is the spring hinge. Generally, at least two hinges on a door must be spring hinges to provide adequate closing force. With adjustable spring tension on the hinge, the closing speed of the door is determined by the amount of closing force set on the hinge. 21 Speciality Hinges Pivot Hinge Double acting center hinge pivot set. For use on average frequency double acting interior doors such as those often found in schools, hospitals and public buildings. Pocket Hinge Use for the popular pocket door, frame and wall condition in corridors fits crosscorridor or double egress pairs of doors. Door sits in wall pockets and still permits 90 of swing. Allowing door to be clear of the initial opening and out of the corridor altogether. Double Acting Gate Pivot Hinge Raised Barrel Hinge If the door is not flush with the frame but is sitting back in a deep reveal from the face of the frame and is to swing a maximum 90 to 110, then a full mortise raised barrel hinge may be used to hang the door. The hinge is the offset of the hinge barrel away from the hinge jamb. The bevel of the door edge must be specified. For light weight gates and doors. Full Mortise Double Acting Spring hinges available in sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6 for wood doors not weighted with plate glass or heavy hardware. For stock hollow metal doors, use 6 x 4½ size. Double Acting Horizontal Spring Pivot Hinge Half Surface Double Acting Spring hinge designed for use on thin plywood doors or gates where screws will not hold in the edge of the door. Wide Throw Hinge Use if the door is not flush with the frame, or is sitting back in a deep reveal from the face of the frame with or without additional obstacles created by applied trim on the face of the frame or a deeper reveal caused by a projecting wall. Continuous Gear Hinges Continuous hinges consist of two full-height, bearing-geared leaves that are held together by a full-length channel cap. This design provides proper alignment and eliminates premature wear. The geared construction and full-length channel cap seals the gap bewteen the door and frame and provides privacy and security against prying. This feature also provides safety against pinched fingers especially in public areas where childread are apt to move thoughout the opening. The gear desgn ensures identical operation of each leaf, and even-distribution of load stress along the full length of the door and frame which eliminated door sag and binding. Mortising is not necessary, and the hinge doubles as weather stripping on the hinge side. Available in a full-surface, full mortise and half-surface types. 21
