Dedicated to Enjoying the Art of Woodworking Volume 22 Issue No 1 January 2017 Officers Founder Don Shutt President Terry Shears Co V. P. Dean Ray Co V.P. Chuck Morris Treasure: Frank Yanko Librarian: Walt Leimer Board: Wayne McCann Board Stew Hagerty Newsletter Dave Therkildsen This Newsletter is sent to interested people for three months, and sent each month to all paid up club members. Join Now and enjoy the fun! Coming Events The next meeting will be February 7th, the 1st. Tuesday of the month. The meeting will be held at 7:00pm in the Club House, Lima Rd., Huntertown. Mark your calendar now. Demonstrations This month our presentation will be Oak Tree doing a demo of the Festool line of woodworking tools. Nice stuff.! Terry will be giving a demo on CNC routers this spring so keep an eye out for that announce- Meeting Notes We opened the meeting with 33 people in attendance. As we approach winter if you see bad weather coming on the night of our meetings please keep an eye on your s for updates. The club library is expanding so check it out. There are now 83 books on carving alone. The Oak tree is continuing with their monthly classes. Check to the web site to see what is scheduled. Many of these classes are run by our members. Chuck s Tiny Tips We did not have any useful tips from Chuck this month. I think he gave a tip, I just didn t find it very useful. Speaking of not very useful, we did have a presentation on the weather rock. Want more details? Here is the link on the web. weatherrock.html Demonstration The Mobius strip or Möbius band (/ˈmǬrbiəs/ (nonrhotic) or US /ˈmoʊbiəs/; German: [ˈmøˈbiˈʊs]), also Mobius or Moebius, is a surface with only one side and only one boundary. The Möbius strip has the mathematical property of being non-orientable. It can be realized as a ruled surface. It was discovered independently by the German mathematicians August F e r d i n a n d Möbius and Johann Benedict Listing in Mr. Curtis Rose s demonstration this month was more than a lesson in woodworking and carving. It was a lesson in math, physics, history, art..and passion. Pictured here is an example of the starting phase of a Möbius ring. You can see that the starting ring is marked to determine the number of twist desired for the final effect. The ring is marked in two colors to guide m a t e r i a l r e m o v e d and material that remains in the final piece. More than one twist can be incorporated and the number of twist can effect the number of sides and edges. To be a Möbius it must maintain the feature of one side and one boundary. As you can see to the side different woods can also be joined before carving to give different effects. Of course the more different woods and the more twists will lead to more difficult carving patterns. Please keep you r address up to date! Do you have any questions about the Three Rivers Woodworkers Club Call: Terry Shears
Demonstration (cont.). Mistakes may be inevitable. But they aren't mistakes if you keep them to yourself...they are art and inspired genius! We are fortunate that we are able to see Curtis new works through periodic show and tell presentations at the club meetings. You can see more of Curtis work on public display at the north Parkview Heart Center in the lobby. Page 2
Show & Tell Projects Projects by Terry Jones Terry brings us a segmented bowl made of 136 segments of alternating pieces of Walnut, Maple, Ash and Pau Santo. The eight point star in the bottom is made from Walnut and Ash surrounded by Pau Santo. The sides are Maple and Walnut and the top ring is made from Walnut and Pau Santo. It has 3 coats of EEE Ultra Shine and finished with 3 coats of Shellawax.. Projects by Dick Dettmer Quoridor Game Board Dick s wife pointed this game out in a catalogue that came before Christmas. He looked at it and said he thought that it would be fairly easy to make. He went through his scrap in his shop and was able to make seven of them. This one is cherry with a maple frame, The pawns are walnut, cherry and maple and white oak. The barriers are walnut. For the finish he sealed with shellac and then sprayed polyurethane, It is an easy game to play and everyone from ages 5 and up enjoyed playing this quick game of strategy. Interested in learning more? Here s a link: Page 3
Show & Tell Projects Projects by Allan Longroy Impossible Triangle The case of the impossible triangle box is made with Indiana cherry and the box has a footprint of 5 square and is 2 1/4 high. The box has 5 mm brass hinges and has been sprayed with pre-catalyzed lacquer which has been rubbed and waxed. The triangle inlay is constructed of various veneers with a maple background. This figure is constructed in two dimensions but cannot be constructed in three dimensions, If you cover the top angle of the triangle with your hand, one arm of the triangle appears to come out at you, and the other appears to go back away from you. If this is true, the 2 arms cannot be connected, Hence, the triangle is impossible in three dimensions. Impossible Square The case of the impossible square box is made with Indiana cherry and the has a footprint of 5 square and is 2 1/4 high. The box has 5 mm brass hinges and has been sprayed with pre-catalyzed lacquer which has been rubbed and waxed. The square inlay is constructed of various veneers with a maple background. This figure is constructed in two dimensions but cannot be constructed in three dimensions, If you cover the top left corner of the square with your hand, one arm of the square appears to come out at you, and the other appears to go back away from you. If this is true, the 2 arms cannot be connected, Hence, the square is impossible in three dimensions. Page 4
Show & Tell Projects Projects by Allen Longroy, cont. The case of the mobius strip box is made with Indiana cherry and the has a footprint of 5 square and is 2 1/4 high. The box has 5 mm brass hinges and has been sprayed with pre-catalyzed lacquer which has been rubbed and waxed. The mobius inlay is constructed of various veneers with a maple veneer background. A Mobius strip is characterized by having one edge and one surface. One thing said about a Mobius strip is if a bug were to walk down the center of the strip it would cover the whole of the strip and end up where it started. Where have we heard this before? Projects by Charles Jaessing Chuck brought us a cheese board and a desk set this month. The Cheese board is laid out using walnut and maple then cut into the shape of a paddle. The desk set is made using surplus Corian material with a sand blasted logo which is painted to color, The desk hardware is purchased. Page 5
Projects by Rhonda Inman Rhonda brings us a Untied States Marine Corps emblem. The request for this piece resulted from her earlier work on a Fireman s Cross and was made as an award for the Mayor of Kendallville. How is it done? Find a single piece of walnut large enough to incorporate the finished piece. Sand to finish or near finish smoothness as the piece will be fragile after scroll sawing and only gentle hand sanding will be possible. Use painter s tape to cover the walnut, glue down pattern, drill holes and cut out as needed on the scroll saw. WOW that sounds easy (but I ll bet it isn t). The dark imprint on spalted maple can be hand burned, but in this case it was lasered in. Nice work. Projects by Steve Moss Here is a fruit bowl and a melted vase from Steve the ring-master master. Projects by Wayne McCann Wayne was not at the meeting this week which left me with a bad case of writer s block. I hope he is here next month. Page 6
