1 TOPIC AND ASSESSMENT GUIDE Course Code Course Title CNCCT1001 Cool Tools Term/Year Term /20 Programme Grade 10 Periods 24 periods/ 2 periods per week Course Purpose This course provides the learner the exposure to the Engineering profession. On completion of the course the learner will be able to: Identify the basic requirements for turning operations Write and understand a simple CNC program Conduct pre-start checks for a small CNC Lathe Operate a small CNC machine Dismantle and reassemble a small CNC machine. 2 Week Elements Performance Criteria Content Assessment Event W1 Introduce machining, tunning,milling and CNC. (videos?) W2 W3 1. Introduction to CNC Lathes 2. Basic lathe operations 3. The cartesian coordinate system and Interpreting technical drawings. 1.1 Describe different parts of a CNC lathe and explain the function of each part. 1.2 Recognize and follow appropriate safety rules for CNC lab work. 2.1 Differentiate between basic lathe operations such as; facing, turning, grooving, parting, drilling, boring, taper turning and threading. 2.2 Identify and select standard tools for lathe operations Calculate cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut for lathe operations. 3.1 Locate points on two dimension coordinate system. 3.2 Interpret simple technical drawings for cylindrical parts and rectangular parts. Show the parts of a lathe and parts of a CNC lathe. Explain the safety rules for CNC Explain / show lathe operations Explain / show standard tooling. Discuss the cutting speed and show why the diameter is important. Demonstrate / explain feedrate. Demonstrate speed calculations Demonstrate feedrate calculations Show simple turning and shapes coordinate system. Look at drawings for turned and milled parts s Label a diagram of a CNC lathe and show knowledge of relevant safety rules (homework) Identify lathe processes and tools. Calculate speeds and feedrates. Identify coordinates from a drawing for a simple turned part. 2

3 W4 W5 4. CNC Lathe programming. 4.1 Describe the functions of some CNC codes and explain their usage. These could include: G0, G1, G2, G3, and M Create a simple CNC lathe program Discuss and show how these codes are applied. Use the Cooltools text editor to create a simple program on a computer and simulate operation. (Give out the Project.) Write a program for a simple shape and simulate the process.. W6 5. Operate a CNC lathe. 5.1 Correctly set up a CNC lathe for facing, turning or other operations such as grooving and boring. 5.2 Create and run a simple CNC lathe program. This should include conducting prestart checks, loading and unloading the machine. Demonstrate setup and show a simple program running for a turning or facing operation. Students in groups to copy and run the program. Students to shut down, and prepare the machines for next class. Portfolio task Copy a simple program for the CNC lathe. Set up the lathe and run the program. Evidence can be shown in screen shots and photographs W7 Demonstrate set up for multiple operations. Project 5.3 Run a given CNC program for multiple lathe operations in one task Students in groups to copy and simulate the program. Program printouts 3

Dismantle and assemble a CNC machine 5.4 Accurately measure the final product and check against the required specifications or drawing. 5.5 Restore the condition of the workshop equipment after use. 6.1 Dismantle a CNC lathe using hand tools and the manufacture catalogue. 6.2 Identify and label parts of a CNC lathe to facilitate assembly. 6.3 Correctly assemble a CNC lathe using hand tools and the manufacturers catalogue. Students to Setup the machine for the project and run the program. Students to measure and assess product against the drawing. Students to tidy work area Demonstrate disassembly and reassembly.
