A certificate of completion is given to installers that complete the Metro SMART-Start On-Site Training Program for each Metro profile. Metro Cutter Metro install methods ensure the simplest application. Starting with the panel battens and perimeter flashing metals, followed by the field panels. Panels are measured, cut & bent to fit areas of the roof at ridges, hips and valleys. Trim caps are then installed, followed by an overall review of the entire roof. In cold climate zones with Cathedral Ceilings a Counter-Batten and Batten grid system is suggested to help prevent ice-damming. Page 2

general - preperation Metro panels are installed on new or existing roofs pitched a minimum of 2-1/2:12 ( 12 degrees). An underlayment is to be installed as per local code and manufacturers instructions. Ice and Water Shield should be installed per product application instructions in areas where icing may occur. Panel battens Panel battens are installed parallel to the ridge/fascia spaced 14 1/2 o/c. Position the first batten flush with the fascia or batten Buildup. The second batten is positioned 14 to allow adequate overhang at the fascia for gutter/water shed from the roof. Valley battens are spaced to accommodate the valley metal Use 2 x2 ridge battens or double stack 1 x4. to provide 1-1/2 fold-up height for hip and ridge. Hip battens install directly on top of each intersecting panel batten, so panel hip cuts can be fitted against hip battens. Space 5 apart. Panel batten spacing is critical because panel must fit snuggly against the batten. Panel battens may be either 1X4, 2X2 wood (Douglas-Fir / Larch #2 or better) or 1X2 plastic battens. Steel hat sections with a minimum height of 3/4-inch, and inch thick (0.43mm) galvanized steel. Page 8

HIP & RIDGE BATTENS Space 5 (127mm )apart. 5 RIDGE Support Battens Install 1X4 (25X100mm) support battens to the required height as shown. The 1X4 creates a ledge beneath the 2X2 (50X50mm) Ridge batten for the Ridge panel to be bent up against. HIP Support Battens Install 1X2 (25X50mm) support battens to the required height as shown. The 1X2 is installed flush with the 2X2 (50X50mm) Hip battens to provide height for the Hip cut panels to be bent up against. ridge RIDGE (127mm) 5 hip (127mm) 5 2x2 battens 1x4 batten Underlay - Panel battens only Random 5 Wood panel battens can be 2 x2, 1 x3 or 1 x4. Consult Metro regarding approved steel purlin sections. Panel batten spacing is critical 14 1/2 o/c to allow panels to fit properly on each course. 1 x4 or 1 x3 panel battens are recommended at the roof edge. Fasten into supporting framing members as per code an Metro High Wind instructions. Page 9

SMART Accessory Batten Metro SMART-Battens require 2-pieces per each 10- foot length of Hip or Ridge. Miter cut and install Metro panels at the center-line of the Hip or Ridge as shown.. 4-inches in from the cut edge, flatten the panel as shown. Apply a (min. 4-in wide) strip of Peel-N-Stick material along the entire length of the hip or ridge butted panels. The sealing strip is placed beginning from the bottom and laps a min. 4-inches (100mm). The seal stropping is pressed against the panels forming a weather seal. The edges of the seal striping can be slightly snipped at each course to better confirm to the panels. Metro SMART-Acc-Battens are installed 6-inches (150mm) apart on each side of the hip or ridge using #10 X 2-in long (50mm) 1/4-in (6mm) HWH screws. The screws are spaced a minimum of 12-inches (300mm) at the ridge, or on each course of panels at the hips as shown. Indicates fastener Trim Cap SMART-Accessory Batten Peel-N-Stick Panel Continuous Ridge Venting cannot be used with the Metro SMART-Acc-Battens. Metro SMART-Vents on one side of the ridge may be used as an alternative. Page 10

HIP & RIDGE SMART-Batten (OPTIONAL ALTERNATIVE) Metro Batten Metro SMART-Battens require 2-pieces per each 10- foot length of Hip or Ridge. Miter cut and install Metro panels at the center-line of the Hip or Ridge as shown.. SMART Batten SMART-XP-Foam-Tape After Mitering & installing panels to Hip center-line, apply Metro SMART-XP-Foam Tape onto flat section of the Metro SMART-Batten and position SMART-Batten using the Metro Trim cap as a guide (6-inches apart) so center of trim cap is aligned with center of hip. Screw SMART-Batten on one side of hip through flat section, XP-Foam Tape, Metro panel and into the roof deck. The XP-Foam expands to 1-1/4 thick and will fill the saw tooth void created by the Metro courses. Use the Metro trim cap to correctly position the other SMART- Batten and then install the trim caps up the hip. Use of SMART-Battens with Metro ROMAN(R) may require additional sealant/tape due to the deep Roman profile beneath the SMART-Batten at the Hip or Indicates fastener Trim Cap SMART-Accessory Batten SMART-XP-Foam-Tape Panel Continuos Ridge Venting is possible with Metro SMART-Battens, refer to Metro website for details. Page 11

counter battens Counter battens (1 x4 ) are used when roofing over uneven surfaces or where a cold roof installation is desired. Fascia buildup for roofing over existing roofs when reroofing over wood shingles or shakes, the existing roof is cut back around the perimeter to allow a buildup of 1 x4, 2 x2 or a combination of both, to provide a solid fastening foundation. The wood buildup conforms to the underside of the 1 x4 counter battens on top of the existing roof. Consult local codes for the other specific requirements. Position 1 x4 counter battens approximately 24 o/c directly over the rafter. Fasteners must penetrate 1 into or through the roof framing members and be placed 12 o/c. Fascia Metal - drip edge metal Fascia metal is available in either 3 1/2 or 5 face widths to cover the build-up of the new lumber at the fascia and to act as a metal drip edge. Fascia Metal Fascia 1st row support battens vary by region, alternative 1st row 3/4-inch riser options can be; 1X4 wood or plastic battens, Metro Gutter Riser, or Cobra mesh material. Page 12

valley metal Position the valley metal between the battens and scribe the valley profile onto the fascia metal. Cut the fascia to allow the valley metal to exit past the fascia a minimum of 1-inch. With either the 7-inch or 20-inch wide valley metal an Open or Closed valley detail may be used. 16 valley panels After full panels ate laid out, remaining areas are filled in by measure, cutting, and bending panels to conform with roof geometry. Metro panels can be shaped to create either an open or closed valley detail. Cut off corner to prevent valley overflow record the top and bottom measurement of each valley panel as shown, and sequentially record the measurements for each course of panels. Apply these dimensions to full or cut panel sections and scribe a line to form the diagonal ct and bend lines as shown alls for an approximate 2 bend down as shown. Metro Panels are cut and bent as shown to finish valley detail. Tile valley Cut & Bend section HIp panels Measure, cut and fold up panels 2 (50mm) at the hip line. Install hip section panels similar to other panels placing additional fasteners through the up turned flanges as shown into hip board. At hips, use either a full panel or a cut section long enough to obtain the hip cut. Always deduct 1/2 (12mm) from your measurements for Hip & Ridge cuts to ensure they fit easily. Page 16

MetroInstallation Batten Details smartvents Metro SMART-vents are used in place of regular panels on the first full course down from the ridge where ventilation is required. The vents are installed similar to panels after cutting ventilation hole in decking (approximately 8 x 30 ). A Metro SMART-vent provides approximately 82 sq. inches of Net Free Vent Area (NFVA). care should be taken to adequately ventilate the building. Building codes require a minimum NFVA of 1/300 the area of the space to be ventilated (attic). Seal Back up-turn Prior to overlaying panel. To prevent rodents and other vermin from entering attic space, the roof deck ventilation hole should be covered with 1/4 wire mesh. Always check local codes and ensure you have adequate intake ventilation for the quantity of exhaust SMART-vents you are installing. Use Metro SMART-XP-Foam tape or sealant directly beneath area where fasteners penetrate panel. Top panel fastening is acceptable behind Metro SMART-Vents, Chimney s & Skylights as shown. Use fasteners with self-sealing rubber washers covered by a dome cap or seal fasteners then cover with Metro touch-up kit. Page 17
