OUTCOMES: 1. produce technical information on the constructional requirements for stairs; 2. set out and manufacture a built up block and riser; 3. set out and manufacture a 1/4 turn winder stair. CREDIT VALUE: 1.5 HN Credits. ACCESS STATEMENT: Access to this unit is at the discretion of the centre. However, it would be helpful if the candidate has successfully completed a SVQ level 2 plus the mandatory workplace assessed units in SVQ level 3 Carpentry and Joinery. The unit forms part of the Advanced Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery and is aimed at candidates following a career in carpentry and joinery and receiving complementary industrial experience

3 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION STATEMENT OF STANDARDS Unit number: D2WH 04 Unit title: CARPENTRY AND JOINERY: TIMBER STAIRS WITH TAPERED STEPS Acceptable performance in this Unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. OUTCOME 1. PRODUCE TECHNICAL INFORMATION ON THE CONSTRUCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STAIRS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) Related terminology is accurately defined. Regulations on design and installation are correctly illustrated. Constructional processes are correctly described in terms of: (i) (ii) (iii) manufacturing a geometric string; manufacturing a laminated spine beam; site fixing a laminated spine beam stair. RANGE STATEMENT Stair types: dogleg; 'open-well'; 1/4 turn; 1/2 turn; geometric; open stairs with laminated spine beams(s). Construction processes: geometric string manufacture; laminated spine beam manufacture; spine beam stair installation. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Written or oral evidence is needed to show the candidate can define 4 items of related terminology, illustrate 4 associated stair regulations and describe 3 construction processes. Assessment will be in the form of closed book. All working practices must be in line with current and relevant health and safety legislation and regulations. All the performance criteria must be met and all items in the range statement covered. 3

4 OUTCOME 2. SET OUT AND MANUFACTURE A BUILT UP BLOCK AND RISER PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) The block is set out in accordance with the specification. The block is built up in accordance with the specification. The riser is machined to size. The riser is fitted and retained securely to the built up block. Work methods and activities are correct in terms of satisfying current safety legislation. RANGE STATEMENT The range for this outcome is fully expressed within the performance criteria. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Evidence of actual performance is needed to show the candidate can set out and manufacture a built up block and riser having a minimum height of 75mm in a safe and organised manner. All working practices must be in line with current and relevant health and safety legislation and regulations. All the performance criteria must be met and all items in the range statement covered. OUTCOME 3. SET OUT AND MANUFACTURE A 1/4 TURN WINDER STAIR PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) The workshop rod is set out in accordance with the specification. The stair is manufactured in accordance with the specification. Work methods and activities are correct in terms of: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) correct sequencing of work; setting up and operating woodworking machinery; setting up and operating woodworking power tools; minimising wastage of material; satisfying current safety regulations. RANGE STATEMENT The range for this outcome is fully expressed within the performance criteria. 4

5 EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Evidence of actual performance is needed to show the candidate can as one of a pair, manufacture a 1/4 turn stair with a balustrade having at least 3 straight steps and three tapered steps forming the 1/4 turn with, a minimum step rise of 150mm, a minimum width of 450mm over the stringers and a maximum pitch of 42º. All working practices must be in line with current and relevant health and safety legislation and regulations. All the performance criteria must be met and all items in the range statement covered. MERIT STATEMENT: To gain a pass in this unit, a candidate must meet the standards set out in the outcomes, performance criteria, range statements and evidence requirements. A pass with merit may be awarded to a candidate who substantially exceeds the minimum requirements of the unit for practical competence in outcomes 2 and 3 and who consistently demonstrates at least 4 from (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) clarity and depth of descriptive responses: clarity and professionalism in graphical work; logical sequencing of work; optimum use of time and resources; full co-operation in team-work; high organisational ability; high motivation; high awareness of, and compliance with, safety requirements. ASSESSMENT In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified. Details of these requirements are given for each outcome. The assessment instruments used should follow the general guidance offered by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) assessment model and an integrative approach to assessment is encouraged. (See references at the end of support notes). Accurate records should be made of the assessment instruments used showing how evidence is generated for each outcome and giving marking schemes and/or checklists, etc. Records of candidates achievements should be kept. These records will be available for external verification. SPECIAL NEEDS Proposals to modify outcomes, range statements or agreed assessment arrangements should be discussed in the first place with the external verifier. 5

7 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES Unit number: D2WH 04 Unit title: CARPENTRY AND JOINERY: TIMBER STAIRS WITH TAPERED STEPS SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 60 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. PURPOSE This unit has been designed for potential and experienced craftspersons working in the construction industry as carpenters and joiners. The candidate will be able to produce technical information associated with the constructional requirements for timber stairs with tapered steps and a balustrade and set out and manufacture a quarter turn winder stair. CONTENT/CONTEXT This unit will be undertaken in a situation where the candidate will be expected to have received all necessary underpinning knowledge and skills related to designing, jointing, assembly and installation of stairs. Corresponding Outcomes: 1. Using previously gained competences the candidate could be guided to the technical aspects associated with balustrades, built up step manufacturer, tapered steps, spine beams and associated regulations. Visual aids could greatly assist the learning process. 2. Candidates could be introduced to forms of built up steps and guided on their manufacture. 3. Accuracy in the production of, and working from, a workshop rod should be fully emphasised. Candidate s previous knowledge of straight flight stairs should be further developed for production of shaped stringers and tapered treads. Numbering the faces of newel posts should be explained and exercised. The stair may be manufactured having one straight step above and two below the quarter turn or two straight steps above and one below the quarter turn. 7

8 The following safety requirements apply: HSW Act (Health and Safety at Work etc Act); COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations; PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations); HSC Safe Use of Woodworking Machinery (ISBN ). APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE Most of this unit will involve the candidate carrying out the activities outlined in the outcomes. The teaching for outcome 1 and 2 could be done collectively with the candidates working individually to generate the relevant evidence. Candidates will be required to work in pairs, to generate practical evidence in stair construction complemented by the lecturer's guidance and instruction in the production of jigs, templates, and safety procedures. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Centres may use the instruments of assessment which they consider to be the most appropriate. Examples of Instruments of Assessment suitable are as follows: Outcome 1 Completion questions and restricted response questions (a) terminology - 5 (b) regulations - 5 (c) construction processes - 4 Satisfactory performance in this outcome could be based on the candidate achieving at least 4 correct responses to each of (a) and (b) plus at least 3 correct responses to (c) and for a merit at least 13 correct responses. Outcome 2 A project brief, outlining the work to be undertaken, could be designed to cover the performance criteria. Candidates successfully completing the Advanced Certificate will be able to progress to the HNC in Construction Practice. Each unit is a separate part of a framework of units offered either separately or as a course and may be taken in any prescribed order.
