Receiving top marks from the magazine s own Design Editor, John Olson can most accurately be described as invaluable. Olson is an expert carpenter with extensive experience of advanced woodwork projects, from logs through to finished items of furniture. KNOWLEDGEABLE EDITORS American magazine Wood was founded in 1984 and is now one of the world s most popular woodworking magazines. The principle of the magazine, that tools and machines are tested and evaluated by knowledgeable editors before publishing, gives its content extra credence. All building projects presented are also tested and pre-built in their own carpentry workshop The Logosol M8 was tested with a chainsaw in a forest environment. Mill your own lumber with minimal effort Logosol s M8 takes most of the labor out of using a chainsaw mill. In fact, I found the M8 as easy to use as a bandsaw mill, but with price and portability advantages. The aluminium-frame M8 has an 18 beam, yet, when assembled, it s still light enough (about 50 lbs without the saw ) for two people to easily pick up and carry. I managed to carry the mostly assembled mill into the woods by myself, set it up and cut the tree where it fell. That sure beats dragging a log to the mill through blade-dulling mud and dirt. You can cut logs up to about 16 long, and their maximum diameter depends on the length of you chainsaw bar; I cut up logs that where nearly 2 in diameter with my 24 bar. You ll need a chainsaw (not included) with at least 80cc motor; lesser-powered saws will struggle. I outfitted a Husqvarna 395XP with ripping chain, and it cut with ease, though slower than a typical bandsaw mill. Rolling the log up the 20 -high stepped platform (you raise the platform and log together to the saw from there) proves the most challenging aspect, but a friend and two cant hooks make I go quickly. Once you mount the saw into the mill s carriage, you feed it through the log via a crank and nylon cord. I couldn t be any simpler. The ratcheting depth-of-cut adjustments lock solidly in place for accurate rips. But know that you ll lose about 3/8 from the thickness with each cut. The M8 and appropriate chainsaw will cost you about $3,200, admittedly a hefty investment. But if you spend a lot of money on precut dried lumber, and have a space to dry wood, you ll recoup your investment over time. Tested by John Olson, Design Editor

6 FRESH CUT LOGOSOL S CUSTOMER MAGAZINE Enjoys the Scent of Newly Planed Timber On weekdays, he works at one of Sweden s biggest companies within subcontract planing and moulding, but when Mikael Höglund has his choice of machine, small-scale is his motto. At home on his farm, he and his father have built up a planing and moulding mill with the capacity to realize both his own dreams and his customers requirements of special mouldings. I bought the machines when I was in between two jobs, but then I was employed full time. And now I try to get everything done at the same time, says Mikael Höglund, who lives with his wife and two children in the village Grämesta, south of Kramfors in Sweden. The farm lies on a hill with a beautiful view of the Ångerman River. Mikael s parents-in-law still live there, and his father Jerry often stops by. Up to now his father has been the one responsible for plenty of the planing and moulding. CUSTOM-MADE MOULDING KNIVES Höglund s planing and moulding mill is located in the old barn. The machines stand on either side of the former manure gutter. It is a LOGOSOL SH230 and LOGOSOL s largest four-sided planer/moulder. At first, I mostly produced joinery materials for the farm, but now I have also taken on external jobs when there is time available, says Mikael Höglund. It is usually a question of small, unique lines of mouldings. On the wall where the moulding knives are hanging, there are several custom-made profiles. The chip handling system is a story in itself. Since the space for the planer/moulders is too small, he recently built an extension using home-made timber. In this small annexe the chip extractor stands. The chips are ejected directly into a trailer that formerly was used as a manure spreader. A convenient solution, since the trailer can be towed by the tractor, Mikael Höglund states. Father Jerry often builds together with his son Mikael Höglund. A large part of his life in retirement is spent working in the planing and moulding mill. USED TO INDUSTRIAL PLANING/MOULDING At work, he is used to handling considerably larger and faster machines. TräTeam is one of the biggest companies within subcontract planing and moulding in Sweden. Here, the annual production is about cubic metres. In two production lines building materials are made for the Swedish company SCA. In comparison with the four-sided planer/ moulder home on the farm, this is quite another level of capacity. The planing/moulding machines Mikael operates on weekdays weigh several tonnes, the timber is fed 50 times as fast and their footprint would fill a large part of the barn. You can t really compare them, even if the functions are the same and the end results are equally good. An industrial planer/ moulder would be more or less useless in a small-scale business, PH360 suits us perfectly, says Mikael Höglund. A PASSION FOR WOOD As many other LOGOSOL customers, there is no lack of building projects or ideas when Mikael Höglund tries to forecast the future. Instead, it is time that is scarce when the fulltime job is to be combined with family, farm and forest. How do you find the energy to start up a planing and moulding mill in this situation? Above all, I am driven by a passion for creating with wood. And then, there is something special with the scent of newly planed timber, Mikael Höglund answers. Mikael Höglund used the outdoor hot tub moulding knives from LOGOSOL when building the sauna of his dreams. Now the family hopes that it soon will be ready to use. The basic idea was to build the frame of spruce, but when I visited the Nolia trade show I discovered that many sauna builders use pine, and I thought So be it. In addition, pine smells so good when you plane and mould it, says Mikael Höglund, who has used his four-sided planer/moulder PH360 for his project. The cylinder-shaped sauna will be a decorative element on the farm and the family has given it the nickname the hat hut since it resembles the illustrations in the Swedish children s book with the same name, written by Elsa Beskow in When Fresh Cut visit Mikael, the sauna has newly been treated with transparent woodstains and will soon get its custom-made windows. The rounded shape is echoed in the elegant furnishings. The backrests are beautifully rounded and the aspen wood gives a smooth surface. I felled the aspen four years ago in my own forest. I cut boards form the logs, and now they came in handy, says Mikael Höglund, who is looking forward to testing and developing his product. 7 FRESH CUT LOGOSOL S CUSTOMER MAGAZINE Saw Video and Learnt to Saw What is the best way to learn how to use a Logosol Sawmill? You watch Logosol s videos and start sawing, is Kjell Rogström s answer. He lives in the village Larsarvet just outside Falun in Sweden. Kjell grew up on the family farm in Larsarvet, studied to be an engineer at the university of Lund, and then moved to Arboga, where he later started his own business within the field of electronics development. In 2005 he wound up his business career. A couple of years earlier, he had moved back to his family farm and decided on de-escalating the hectic life as a small entrepreneur. But sitting still doing nothing was not an option for Kjell. The farm included a couple of acres of woodland, just enough to heat the house with firewood and produce timber for household requirements. Formerly, there was a sawmill in the village, but it was closed down. Due to this, he ordered videos about sawing from Logosol, the same videos that today are available at I practically knew nothing about how to cut a log into boards, says Kjell, who watched the video again and again. When my neighbour visited me, I used to show him the video. Eventually, he said No, thanks he had watched the video ten times and thought it was enough. In 2006 Kjell bought a Logosol Sawmill with electric saw head and the friction feeder E37. One of his first projects was to build a roof over the sawmill, and after that a sturdy log table for the purpose of staging up logs for the sawmill, on ground that earlier had been a potato and vegetable field. Kjell is a real handyman, his live-apart partner Zara Rogström states. He has cut a whole lot of renovation timber through the years, but now a big building project is in the pipeline. On the log table lie some 60 pine logs. The timber is going to become a new deck, an outhouse, and some other odds and ends. According to Kjell, the sawing generates double benefit. Beside construction timber, the sawmill delivers slabs that heat the house. The slabs dry quickly, are easy to cut into length and burn well. He was a novice when he started to cut timber in The timber that now lies stacked for drying is of the highest quality. It The most important when sawing is that the chain is sharp, says Kjell Rogström. is from dense pine with a lot of heartwood. The surface is finer and the measurements are more accurate than what you usually find in a commercial timber yard. If you only are careful, the deviation is at most one millimetre on a four metre long board, says Kjell. Fresh Cut visited Larsarvet in early February. Kjell had already begun sawing the trees felled this winter, so that the timber will have enough time to dry before being used during the coming summer. This year it is particularly important that the sawing is ready in time. The house is to be extended so that his partner Zara can move in. 60 logs waiting to be sawn. Björn Saws His Own Timber When It s not Available to Buy Why cutting your own boards when there is finished timber to buy? Because the commercial timber yards only have standard dimensions and lack the things that give character to a house. Ask Björn Christiernsson. He has just bought his second sawmill from LOGOSOL to make seven metre long beams. Björn is famous in Sweden for being the carpenter on a Swedish TV show, where they renovate and alter homes. We interviewed him last year, but then it was about workwear for children that he and his wife Karolina have designed. A SAWMILL AT THE WORKSITE But this time he talks about sawing. For some years, Björn shares a LOGOSOL M7 sawmill with his relatives. It is on an island in the province Sörmland in Sweden. Here, he has sawn a good deal of timber, for instance timber for his clothing company s trade show stand. In addition, he also owns a Big Mill from LOGOSOL. But now he has begun with a big project: the family s self-designed house just outside Stockholm. The basement is ready and this spring the building of the house will begin with sawing a total of 150 metre of beam made of spruce. The longest beams will be de just over seven metres long. The longest solid wood beams you can buy are 5.5 metres, Björn says to explain why he decided to saw the timber himself. Sawing on the island and then transporting the beams through the city of Stockholm was not tempting. That is why Björn has bought an extended LOGOSOL M8 sawmill, which will stand at the worksite and be used for sawing all sorts of timber for building the house. 15 spruces have been earmarked for the project. They stand in a friend s garden. He gives them away in return for the help of getting them felled and removed. So, even in the immediate vicinity of the capital you can find logs to cut into timber. A MODERN HALF-TIMBERED HOUSE This will not be a commonplace house. Basically, it will be two buildings laid in a cross. The ceiling will go all the way up to the ridge, and on the outer walls visible collar beams will run. The largest free length will be seven metres. The walls will be built of lightweight concrete blocks that then are plastered. The façade will also have standing wood beams. It will be what you could call a modern interpretation of a half-timbered house, with large window areas. We have received help from a friend who is an architect. Now we are giving the design the finishing touches on a computer, says Björn, who has had time to get familiar with the family s future home virtually. MOVING IN THIS CHRISTMAS With a sawmill on the building site, you can supplement with wooden details, without going to the timber yard or caring about what is available on the shelves. Should Björn come up with the idea that some additional beams or an area of rough-edged siding boards would do the trick, he can just start his LOGOSOL sawmill. We expect to move in by Christmas. We have said that before, but then we have not stated what year we mean, says Björn. That this will be the year it happens, is due to their new baby daughter, their second child. So, it only remains for dad to start sawing and building. Now Björn Christiernsson has got himself another sawmill from LOGOSOL to be able to produce beams of the right length for building the family s new house.
