A CENTRALCHALLENGE 300 POINTS 1. Intent of the Challenge: To solve this Challenge, the team must prepare an original improvisational Skit of 5 minutes or less. Immediately before the Presentation, the team will have up to 5 minutes of Preparation Time. The Preparation Time will take place at the Presentation Site where the team will be observed by the audience and Appraisers. During the first 4 minutes of the Preparation Time, the team will determine how they will integrate Improv Element 1: The Character from the Past, Element 2: Pandemonium and Element 3: Stage Makeup. The team will then have an additional minute of Preparation Time to incorporate a Contemporary Character (Improv Element 4) and his/her occupational skills into dealing with the Pandemonium. 2. Skit: a. The team will create an original Improv Skit that includes at least two Characters: one from a past time period and one from a contemporary time period. These Characters are faced with the task of dealing with Pandemonium and must use the tools, knowledge, and skills of their occupations to help resolve the Pandemonium. b. The team s improvisational Skit may be set in any location, real or imaginary, and in any time period. c. The team will earn points for a clearly developed story that integrates the (4) Improv elements into the Skit and for the originality and creativity of the Skit C.1.a & C.1.b. 3. Improv Elements: The Following Improv Elements must be included in the team s Skit: a. Required Improv Element 1: Character from the Past i. The Character from the Past will be a team-created character who is defined by his/her time period and occupation. For the purpose of this Challenge, an occupation is a trade or job that is carried out for a specific task(s) that requires specific skills, knowledge, or tools. In the Skit, the team must present a historically accurate representation of the Character s occupation within the selected time period. ii. Prior to the tournament, Elementary Level and Middle Level teams will research and choose 6 time periods from the Time Period Table. Secondary Level and University Level teams will choose 8 time periods. For each time period, the team will research and choose only one historic occupation for the Character from the Past. Each occupation must be different from the other occupations and represent different career fields. For example: you can have only one carpenter or only one nurse in your selected time periods. The team will list its chosen time periods and occupations on the Tournament Data Form. iii. The team should use good judgment and remember that performances should be appropriate for all audiences. Refer to the Rules of the Road under Tournaments, Conduct and Concerns, # 3. iv. The time period and occupation for the Character from the Past will be selected by a random drawing while the team is in the Prep Area. The selection will be announced by the Timekeeper/Announcer just prior to the 5-minute Preparation Time. v. The team will earn points for the development of the Character from the Past. This will be done through the integration of his/her time period, occupation, and skills into the Skit (C.2.a). DestinationImagination.org 2013 Destination Imagination, Inc. 73

CENTRALCHALLENGE 300 POINTS A TIME PERIOD TABLE for CHARACTER FROM THE PAST (EL and ML choose 6, SL and UL choose 8) (BCE) 199 (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) (CE) BCE means Before Common Era. CE means Common Era. b. Required Improv Element 2: Pandemonium i. A major situation is about to overtake the team. This event, happening or disaster could be devastating or just cause an uproar of silliness! Could the sky be falling? Someone ate all the cookies in the cookie jar?! Where s my telescope?! Where did all those chickens come from?! The team should be ready for anything. ii. At the tournament, the team will randomly select a slip of paper in the Prep Area that indicates the Pandemonium. It will be up to the team to take its given Pandemonium and develop it. iii. The Character from the Past and the Contemporary Character (See A.3.d) must work together, using the skills, knowledge and tools of their occupations, to deal with the Pandemonium. iv. Teams will earn points for the effective integration of the Pandemonium into the Skit and the use of the skills of both Characters, working together, to deal with the Pandemonium (C.3.a & b). c. Required Improv Element 3: Stage Makeup i. The team will research the following six styles of Stage Makeup (see definition) and be prepared to use any one of the six in its Skit. 1. Animal 4. Kabuki 2. Fantasy 5. Doll 3. Monster 6. Clown ii. At the tournament, the team will randomly select one style of Stage Makeup, which will be revealed to them at the Presentation Site. iii. The team will use its randomly-selected style of Stage Makeup to create, develop, and/or enhance only one Skit character. This Skit character is the team s choice and may be any character in the team s skit. iv. The team will bring to the tournament one (1) resealable clear plastic bag of up to 1 liter or 1 quart capacity containing all its Stage Makeup and applicators. All materials must fit into the resealable clear plastic bag when it is closed. v. All Stage Makeup must be applied on stage either during the 5-minute Preparation Time or during the Skit. No Stage Makeup may be applied to any team member prior to the Program Materials Improvisational Challenge D: Pandemonium

A CENTRALCHALLENGE 300 POINTS Preparation Time. Any Stage Makeup that has been applied prior to the Preparation Time will result in a 0 score for (C.4). vi. Neither the plastic bag nor the Stage Makeup containers, applicators or tools may be used as props or referred to during the Presentation. However, during the Skit, the contents of the makeup bag may be used to apply Stage Makeup to the one character who is or will be wearing the Stage Makeup. Aerosol spray products cannot be used. Makeup may not be applied to clothing. Accidental spills will not affect scoring. vii. The team must bring a protective floor covering to place in the Start Area. The Stage Makeup must be applied to the character only on this floor covering. The floor covering may not be used in any way as a part of the team s Presentation. The floor covering must be no smaller than 36in x 36in (91.5cm x 91.5cm) and must be a single sheet or tarp. It may be made of any material, but must be able to prevent any Stage Makeup from soaking through to the floor below. The floor covering should be left on the floor during the Presentation. The Start Area becomes part of the Performance Area during the Skit. The team can go back to the Start Area to add to or make changes on the character during the Presentation. After the Presentation, the team must remove the floor covering. The intent is that the covering will protect the site. A team that does not bring the required floor covering will not be allowed to apply Stage Makeup, which will result in no score for C.4. viii. The team may bring Stage Makeup clean-up materials. Cleaning materials and the floor covering cannot be used in the Presentation and do not have to fit in the 1 liter or 1 quart or smaller resealable plastic bag. ix. The team will earn points for original use of the Stage Makeup, the effectiveness of the use Stage Makeup of Stage Makeup to help create and/or develop and/or enhance one Skit character, and the integration of the character wearing Stage Makeup into the Skit (C.4.a-c). Cosmetic or other theatrical preparations used for a stage presentation to enhance, alter, or disguise an actor s face, hair, and/or physical appearance. d. Required Improv Element 4: The Contemporary Character i. In the Prep Area, the team will randomly select a tournament-supplied slip of paper that indicates the Contemporary Character. The team will give the slip of paper to the Prep Area Appraiser without looking at it. ii. At the Presentation Site, after the first 4 minutes of Preparation Time, the Timekeeper/ Announcer will reveal the Contemporary Character to the team and the audience. The announcement will include the Occupation and a brief description. The Occupation will be a real occupation. Example: Smokejumper: A firefighter trained to parachute into a wildfire. iii. The slip of paper will be given to the team to use during the final 1 minute of its Preparation Time to help it develop the Contemporary Character and integrate the Character into the Skit. For the purpose of this Challenge, Contemporary is the time period from 1980 to the present. DestinationImagination.org 2013 Destination Imagination, Inc. 75

CENTRALCHALLENGE 300 POINTS A iv. The team will earn points for the development the Contemporary Character. This will be done through the integration of his/her time period, occupation, and skills into the Skit (C.5.a). 4. Teamwork: Improvisational performance requires great teamwork! Teamwork is scored from the time the team enters the Presentation Site to the end of the Skit. During the team s 5-minute Preparation time, the team will earn points for the way team members work together to create their Skit. During the Skit the team will earn points for the way team members work together to move the story along and how they improvise together (C.6.a & b). 5. Overall Presentation: The team will also earn points for a well integrated and executed Overall Presentation (C.7.a). 6. Team-Provided Items: a. Forms: The team should prepare and bring five copies of PAGE ONE and PAGE TWO of the Tournament Data Form, one copy of PAGE THREE of the Tournament Data Form, and one copy of the Declaration of Independence (found in the Rules of the Road) to the Prep Area. See the Tournament Data Form at the end of the Challenge for specific instructions. b. Team Identification Sign: Your team should provide a free-standing Identification Sign (ID Sign) displaying your team s Team Name, School/Organization Name, Team Number, and Level. It needs to be approximately 2ft x 3ft (.61m x.91m) and cannot be used as a scoring element. The sign will be used only for the purpose of identifying your team during your Presentation. Your team will not receive a deduction if you do not provide a sign, but it will help the Appraisers and the audience to know who is performing. c. Research Notes and other Prep Area Materials: i. Research notes created by the team before the tournament may be used during the creation of the Skit. Research notes may be handwritten, typed by the team, photocopied, or electronically duplicated. The following are not considered research notes: books, pre-written scripts, pre-written jokes, pre-cut templates or models, drawings, and team generated lists of ideas for scenarios, characters, etc. Research notes may not be viewed on any electronic device at the tournament. ii. The team may bring to the tournament no more than one 1 liter or 1 quart closed plastic bag of Stage Makeup and applicators. In addition, the team may bring materials for cleaning up after its Presentation. iii. This must be a single sheet or tarp. iv. The team cannot bring physical props, scenery and/or wear or bring costumes to use in the Improvisational Challenge. A costume is anything that has been worn or altered with a specific solution in mind prior to the tournament. Graphics on shirts or other clothing are acceptable, as long as they do not contribute in any way to the Challenge solution. v. A clean copy of this Challenge may be brought to the Presentation Site. It must be without team notes Program Materials Improvisational Challenge D: Pandemonium

B SPECIAL RULES 1. Honoring the Intent of this Challenge: The intent of this Challenge is to create a unique improvisational Skit based on the specific combination of Elements selected at the tournament. Prior to the tournament, the team is encouraged to prepare for the many possible combinations of Improv Elements they may receive by generating different scenarios, experimenting with the materials, creating potential characters, and mixing and matching the various Improv Elements in practice sessions. It is expected that the team will choose to use and include some of the ideas that come from its practice sessions when combining the Improv Elements chosen randomly at the tournament into its unique Skit. As long as the team does not bring its ideas for scenarios, potential characters, etc. into the Preparation Area in written form, using the ideas is acceptable and is in keeping with the intent of the Challenge. If a team moves on to another level of tournament and by chance selects one or more of the same Elements, they are encouraged to create another original solution, but no deduction will be taken if they reuse parts of an earlier solution. 2. Expense Report: No Expense Report form is required for this Challenge. 3. Clothing and Accessories: a. Items of clothing worn by the team may not be used as a part of the Presentation or in the Skit. b Jewelry, hair accessories (other than things contained in the 1 liter or 1 quart resealable plastic bag to be used as a part of Stage Makeup), watches, glasses, or items from the team members pockets, purses, backpacks, or any other containers may not be used as props or be incorporated in any manner in the Presentation. The containers may not be used in the Presentation. Team members may wear wristwatches for time management. The wristwatch can be worn during the Presentation but it may not be incorporated into the solution in any way. For example, a team member saying Dad will be here in 2 hours after looking at his or her watch is using the watch as a prop, and this is not allowed. The only official time is that kept by the Timekeeper/Announcer, and these official times are final. DestinationImagination.org 2013 Destination Imagination, Inc. 77
