1 Guidelines/ Rules for the Mr. NH Rainbow Pageant Contestant Qualifications/Requirements: Must be a male Must be associated with at least one of the following: Masons, Eastern Star, Demolay or Rainbow Must represent a NH Rainbow Assembly (aka Exeter, Nashua, Derry, Goffstown, Pemi, Plymouth, Milford, or Rochester) Must have an address where the pageant coordinator can contact you with any information Must have a GREAT sense of humor and know how to have fun! ( The Basics First off, I want to thank you for considering competing in the Mr. NH Rainbow Pageant! With drive, perseverance and some humor, I m sure you will win! This packet should answer most of your questions about what will happen on the day of competition, and what you should be prepared to do. Anyways, here are some basics you need to know in order to understand the rest of this information packet. The stage will be set up with four X s in various positions, on the floor. It will look like so Judges/audience Enter X1 X2 X3 X4 Exit In order to do a correct pageant walk you must walk on stage and stand on X1 and do a complete 360 o turn. Then walk to X2, right in front of the judges. This is an X where typically contestants show their personality by blowing kisses, waving, and winking. Then proceed to X3 where usually contestants do something cute and complete another slow, 360 o turn. Finally, walk to X4 and wave goodbye to the judges/audience and step off stage.

2 The Pageant This pageant consists of four sections. Each category has its own set of guidelines/rules. The order of this list is the order the show will go in. Copies of blank judging sheets are attached so that you may know what specifics the judges are looking for and the point worth. For every rule you break will result in a 15 point reduction to your overall score! Beauty The first main event in the competition is Beauty. During this event, you will model formal attire to the judges and audience doing a pageant walk. Refer to The Basics section on how to do a pageant walk. Formal attire is classified as dressing up as a Dr. Seuss character. It is your choice of what you wear. You want to show actions that best fit your attire, in your formal wear. Also, make sure your hair (and makeup if you choose) is perfect and coincides with your outfit. During this section, the answers you give for the Introduction Questions on your registration form will be read. When the MC says Thank You ( your name), you should be exiting the stage. Remember to make eye contact with the judges. You will be judged on your poise, elegance, modeling and acting as your character. Beauty is worth 40 points. (Formal Outfits the Lorax, Cat in a Hat, Thing 1, Thing 2, Cindy Lou Who, the Grinch, Horton, any other Dr. Seuss characters) Talent The second event in the competition is talent. You may perform any type of talent you have, given it is Rainbow appropriate. Some ideas for talent may be telling jokes, lip syncing, instrument playing, or dancing. Anything you can possibly think of. Your talent must be a minimum 2 ½ minutes long. Remember, you want to entertain both the judges and the audience. If the audience is enjoying your talent, and is showing support for it, the judges will take that into consideration. You also want to impress the judges with the talent you have chosen, so make sure it is original and unique. If you need to change your talent after you have submitted the registration form, please contact me as soon as you have made that decision. You must submit any music you may need for your talent with the registration form on a CD and supply your own props. You will be judged on the originality, uniqueness and overall performance of your talent. Talent is worth 30 points.

3 Question You will be asked the following three question, with each answer being approximately one minute, no more than 1 ½ minutes: Why are you involved in this pageant? If you were given a free day when you could do whatever you wanted, what would you do with it and why? If you could be any plant, which would you be and why? These questions are meant for both the judges and the audience to get inside the minds of each of the contestants, so please think thoroughly about your answers. However, there are no right or wrong answers, so please be truthful and honest, though as appropriate with your answers. Your answers will be judged based on originality and elegance. uh and um are not considered elegant. Questions are worth 20 points each for a total of 60 points. Trivia You will be asked three questions regarding Rainbow. These questions will all be about lessons in Rainbow, but don t worry, they are quite well known facts that I think you ll know. You will be expected to answer all of the questions, to the best of your abilities. Try to be eloquent in your responses, even though you are expected to give answers on the fly. Again, uh and um are not considered eloquent. Trivia is worth 30 points, with each question being worth 10. Donation Jar In addition to the points you will receive from the judges for your performance in the four sections, the audience will be able to participate as well. Each contestant will have a jar with their name on it. The audience will be able to put money into the contestant s jar they like the most throughout the competition. Then, after Questions, the money will be counted. The contestant with the 3 rd largest amount of money will have 5 points added to their overall score, the 2 nd will have 10 points added and the contestant with the most money in their jar will have 15 points added to their overall score. As you can see, this can completely sway the competition and could potentially change who will win. You may not take money from other contestants jars and put it in your own or anyone else s. During intermission, which will be

4 after Talent, you will have the chance to go into the audience with your jars and conjure up donations for your jar. By bringing a group of supporters with full wallets, you could increase your chances of winning. So make sure your friends and family all come and watch! Remember, all monies collected for the day, including the jars, will go to the Hope for the Future Scholarship Program. Crowning After the judges deliberate and the scores are tallied, crowning will begin. There will be a 2 nd runner up and 1 st runner up named. These winners will only receive bragging rights, but will be part of Mr. NH Rainbow s suite, as all contestants will be. Then, the contestant with the most points will be crowned Mr. NH Rainbow. They will receive the title of Mr. NH Rainbow, a crown and sash. I encourage the winner to wear their crown and sash at as many Rainbow events as possible. Mr. NH Rainbow and his suite will be introduced at Grand Assembly with Grand Honors, so be sure to attend and wear your crown and sash! Be proud of what you have accomplished! Suggestions For success in this competition, I have a few suggestions You may want to get a coach. The coach can only be an active girl from the NH Rainbow assembly (Not the GWA or MC) that you are representing. The entire assembly can help too, but, on the day of the competition, only coaches will be able to help backstage, as we don t want it too crowded. The coach can help you prepare for the competition by aiding you to pick out your formal wear and talent attire. They can also help you practice your talent. They may assist you in practicing for trivia by asking random questions to you. Your coach can help you between transitions of the events on Pageant day but cannot go on stage with you. You might want to watch pageant shows, such as Toddlers in Tiaras. Although this show has contestants who are children, it does give insight on how the pageant will run. It could also give you ideas on what do to and how to act. I highly suggest just watching one episode. Just know, the girls on that show

5 compete in glitz pageants. I am not asking you to go tanning or doing your nails or having big hair. However, if you want to, that is your choice. HAVE FUN WITH IT!!! This is a fun competition, and I know you all are good sports! This is for a good cause and will be entertaining for all if you embrace it fully. I am looking for contestants who really want to win, and will try hard. It wouldn t hurt if you got us all to laugh, either. Laughter always translates into receiving more points!
