1 Instructional Overview Performance Task Launch Question Summary Teacher Notes Supplies Mathematical Discourse Writing/Discussion Prompts Apps take a long time to design and program. One app in development is a game in which players shoot lasers at asteroids. They score points based on the number of hits per shot. The designer wants your feedback. Do you think students will like the game and want to play it? What changes would improve it? Grids are provided with asteroids centered at specific coordinates in the xy-plane. Students will be given different rules as they progress through the assessment. Eventually, they will create their own ideas for the scoring. If they create quadratic equations as they learned how to graph in this section, they will be able to hit more asteroids. The students might need help figuring out if they are close enough to the point to call it a hit. Practice with a few equations and decide if an equation hits a point. Handouts Do you have any app games that require mathematics skills? Would an app need to help students understand how to create equations? Which form of the quadratic equations would be most helpful? Which form of a quadratic equation did you find most helpful when trying to hit the point? Copyright Big Ideas Learning, LLC Algebra 7
2 Name Date Curriculum Content TEKS Content Standards Mathematical Thinking A..C, A.6.B, A.6.C, A.7.A, A.9.C. C. Select tools, including real objects, manipulatives, paper and pencil, and technology as appropriate, and techniques, including mental math, estimation, and number sense as appropriate, to solve problems. Students must decide what tools to use to write equations whose graphs hit the asteroids. Rubric Points. Each student would have different equations Total possible points for each equation written that hit at least one point and scored correctly for each equation written with no hit. The student goes back and creates an equation for Exercise that hits multiple points. 3. The student provides a set of rules for the game. All the points can be hit by a quadratic equation and an exponential equation. Mathematical Thinking: Select tools, manipulatives, technology, and techniques to solve problems. Students make selections that allow them to hit the equations. Total Points 6 A quadratic equation is created that hits at least 3 points. 4 A quadratic equation is created that hits points. A linear equation is created that hits two points. An equation is created that misses. 6 Rules provided, two equations written that hit at least 4 points and scored correctly 4 Rules provided and two equations hit at least points The rules would be hard to follow and no quadratic equation is included. 3 It is clear through the students responses that they have a better chance of making the shot with different formats. Award partial credit as needed. 7 points Algebra Copyright Big Ideas Learning, LLC
3 Apps take a long time to design and program. One app in development is a game in which players shoot lasers at asteroids. They score points based on the number of hits per shot. The designer wants your feedback. Do you think students will like the game and want to play it? What changes would improve it?. The game starts with a grid and a random set of targets as you see below. You get five points per asteroid hit and two shots. Play the game a few times and record your score. Write your equations and then sketch them on the graph. Record the points you get each round. The app would say you hit the asteroid if you were within 0.3 units of the center. a. b. Copyright Big Ideas Learning, LLC Algebra 9
4 Name Date c.. What if the rules were to change? What if you earned more points for each hit on one equation: 5 points for hit, 0 points for hits, 45 points for 3 hits, and 0 points if you hit 4 asteroids. Look back at Exercise. Would you change your equations? Select one of the three problems and write one equation to get as many points as you can. 3. How would you change the game? What method do you think would be the best? Should there be more points awarded for quadratic equations? What about exponential equations? Write your own rules for your app and then use the grid to get as many points as you can. 0 Algebra Copyright Big Ideas Learning, LLC
