2 INTRODUCTION To write a novel and to write a script isn t the same work. If I already know my ability to do the first, I wanted to try the second one and learn from the result where to evolve. Narrative design is indeed a work I can enjoy to do someday, and I needed to know what to focus on. I also chose to write it in English. I created a mission inspired by in the world of Tom Clancy s The Division - a game I enjoyed to play previously - to reuse some assets of the game and the way missions are done. However, some elements are different: - To create new sets, the map doesn t have the same delimitation. - I created a new faction and new characters - The mission is not compatible with the original game and cannot be incorporated. If it was, the mission s final revelation should have created consequences to the game, and Aaron Kenner s storyline. In the end, I really enjoyed to write it. I have a better knowledge of what s difficult to anticipate, and of what I have to learn. Some gameplay documents or details seem to be missing and I certainly put to much game design details. Also, the final area is a flawed idea I have to change in the next attempt. 2

3 ENVIRONNEMENT Global universe: The Division The mission takes place in the universe of The Division. Players (four in this mission) are SHD agents, and they are still fighting to free New York City from hostile factions and the green plague. In this chaos, a new hostile group is finding his way: The Vision. Hostile faction: The Vision Former SHD agents compose the hostile faction. The reason of this rebellion is unclear at the time of the mission. Later, we will discover that they want to expend the green plague as a necessary evil to free the world. This is why they called themselves The Vision. Their leader, unknown, is probably still working undercover in The Division. They use the same equipment as the SHD, plus flamethrowers. The hostage: Ethan Steinberg Ethan, 24, is an inventive, handy SHD agent. He has the feeling he can do everything he wants, so he does not always work by the book, follow the mission or listen to his squadpartner Nicole or his supervisors. He has an eldest sister, Annie, also working in The Division as an analyst. Mission location: Liberty Island The main part of the mission takes place on Liberty Island, NYC. The vision choose this place as a headquarter for the symbol of freedom and new world in reference of the first New World vision immigrants saw when they came from Europe in the past century. The garden around the monument is transformed as a military camp, as well as Fort Wood and the pedestal. 3

4 MISSION 01 : ETHAN MISSION : PIER 40 (Estimated time: 1 30 ) Mission synopsis When Ethan came back from a regular mission with his partner Nicole, he came upon a presumed dead Division agent in conversation with unknown hostiles about an on-going attack against the Division s Base of operation. They tried to stop them but Nicole was killed and Ethan was taken hostage. They sent him to their headquarter on Liberty Island to torture him and get information. Annie, a SHD analyst, sends a squad to rescue him. On his side, Ethan, who does not know if someone is coming, tries to escape, causing difficulties to the players. Mission objective Save the hostage and learn what he knows. Mission activation When the player choose the mission in the map, he receives a brief: ANNIE STEINBERG (by radio) Agents, one of us was taken hostage in the Hudson River Park Pier 40. Last news, he was in the surveillance s room. Go rescue him. We need what he knows. And don t fuck this up guys It s my brother Ethan! 4

5 PIER 40 BOATHOUSE OFFICE When the squad arrives, the area is empty. The target leads to the surveillance room. One of the players has to interact with the computer to see what happened. 5

6 CUT SCENE PIER 40 S SECURITY FOOTAGE (Estimated time: 35 ) Ethan is trying to block the door with furniture. He is talking to his radio. ETHAN STEINBERG (in panic) Annie, secure the line. I need backup they killed Nicole ANNIE (by radio) Line secured. What da fuck happened? ETHAN I don t have any supplies left and I m trapped Send me someone you trust, they can t have it. Ethan has blocked the door. He can t do anything more. He knows it s not enough. ANNIE (by radio) They can t have what? ETHAN (Trying to be calm) They just can t... We saw this new faction guys, talking about an on-going attack with The door explodes. Ethan falls dawn. His communication device is damage. Three hostiles come into the room. HOSTILE 1 (Look like a squad-leader) Where is it? ETHAN (Coughing) You burned it, asshole! Hostile 2 takes aim to Ethan who desperately tries to shield himself with his arms ETHAN I memorized it! HOSTILE 1 Let s see that. Take him to the Bartholdi s. Keep him Alive. Hostile 2 and Hostile 3 take Ethan out. 6

7 ANNIE (by radio) Bartholdi s, could it be Lady Liberty? You have to find out. Take a boat and pull my brother out, ok? And find who they are!... Sorry guys, I lied. I didn t know if he was still alive, or taken hostage He must have learned a real bad shit! The target leads to a small CERA boat the pontoon. When one of the players interacts with the footbridge s door, the squad is transported to a new area. CUT SCENE INTRODUCTION TO THE STATUE (Estimated time: 10 ) The squad gets on board. We see the Statue of Liberty and the city behind. ANNIE (by radio) The location is confirmed; His broken watch s last signal was emitted from inside the monument. I lost it. I can t be more precise. I hope he s fine. The boat approaches undetected. The squad gets off and hide on the dock, ready to infiltrate. 7

9 LEVEL 1F to 3F INFILTRATION The squad has to find his way to the pedestal, passing trough the garden/camp (1F), Fort Wood (2F) to the rooftop (3F). The garden is transformed as a well-organized military camp and many elements (tents, crates, vehicles, explosive cans ) create multiple confortable infiltration possibilities. Players have to understand that everything is coming from SHD and CERA s equipment. However, painted on some of them, the players can see the faction s name: The Vision. Many hostiles are located in this area and the squad has to stay unseen. A limited part of Liberty Island is available. There are three infiltration stages: 1- The squad has to kill the hostiles silently with coordinated attacks using silencers or bladed weapons, or the ones in the camp will join for a hopeless fight. 2- In the camp, hostiles are inside tents (sleeping, talking ) or outside (walking, working ). Players have to avoid them or kill them discreetly if they do not want to be overwhelmed in a hopeless fight. 3- In Fort Wood s external stairs (2F) to the rooftop (3F). During this stage, the player has to see the Statue of Liberty behind the enemies. When he does, an explosion happens between the colonnades (3P). The enemies in the stairs run to the pedestal, and the players can easily access the rooftop. However, hostiles 9

10 come from behind (from the camp or a previously locked door to Fort Wood) and infiltration necessarily fails. A fight starts but some hostiles just run trough the area to the pedestal. Go check the hostage Fuck, other agents may be upstairs! Reuse of CERA s elements Fort Wood stairs N.B.: The area is very large in real size, so it has to be reduce to minimise the no man s land effect. However, it can be a great contrast with the next areas as they became more confined. 10

11 LEVEL 1P to 3P INSIDE THE PEDESTAL Each floors is organised with different kind of rooms, like the SHD s base of operations. Starting from level 2P, next to a workshop/torture room, the place is damage: dead bodies, bullet impacts, fire... We have to understand that Ethan manages to escape from the torture room and during a confrontation, fired in a big napalm tank. A body is lying next to the torture room, an axe in the head. Noises, coming from above, indicate that Ethan is still alive and struggling. Some enemies come from behind the squad, giving a feel of insecurity. 11

12 Workshop/torture room: The place has to remind the players of SHD s base of operation N.B.: To minimise the path length and avoid boredom, pedestal s height and organisation have to be different from reality. 12

13 LEVEL 4P PEDESTAL OBSERVATION PLATFORM At 4P, the squad fights against six or seven enemies, plus a stronger one: SHD agent John Karmitz. The access to the Statue is closed from the inside and a small bomb has been activated to open it. The explosion happens at the beginning of the battle causing damages if a player is too close and all the enemies run into the stairs. As previously, new ones can come from behind. ANNIE (By radio, after Karmitz s death in this area or the next one/ Stupefied) What da hell was that? He was reported dead days ago! N.B.: The real area is very narrow. It has to be extend for playability. 13

14 LEVEL 1S to 4S - STATUE S STRAIRS Players have to reach the final level to find Ethan. Because of height and narrowness, hostiles are hard to kill. The players have to find the good spot to aim and terminate them. Some of the hostiles have flamethrowers. If the tanks explode, some elements can fall to the lower levels and damage the squad. The same happen for grenades. N.B.: The stairs are way too long and have to be reduced. 14

LEVEL 5S - CROWN OBSERVATION PLATFORM When the players reach the final floor, Ethan thinks they are Vision and shoot them. But hopefully the gun is empty.

He is lying on the floor under the crown s windows, bleeding, a gun in a hand, a camera in the other one. Next to him, a thunderbolt analysis device is open and some tools are on the floor (screwdriver, small cables ). ETHAN (exhausted, in pain) Oh! Rescue squad... Did you killed them all?... I hope Or we re doomed Everything is in it I wanted to send it From this thing but ANNIE (by radio / in shock) Ethan, breathe! It s ok now, you ll be fine. Agent, watch this god damn video. A player can take the camera and watch the video. Until that, Annie keeps talking. ANNIE (by radio, in loop) You have to watch the footage What did you find bro? 15

17 MISSION 01 : ETHAN MISSION : IN THE HEAD (Estimated time: 1 30 ) CUT SCENE - THE PLAN (estimated time : 55 ) The footage is recorded from a camera in the torture room (2P). Alone in the room, Ethan manages to free himself from a chair he is linked too. [cut] He grabs the camera on a tripod. [cut] He starts to explain the situation. As he speaks, he searches the room for a weapon; sometimes looking at the camera, sometimes at the door, as if he heard a suspicious sound. ETHAN (Whispering fast) Annie, I m on Liberty Island. The division is corrupted. An attack is programmed; it s imminent, get out now! I mean NOW! I was with Nicole and we saw agent Karmitz, presumed dead, talking with a guy from this new faction. We heard that they plan to blow out the base by using the old gas network underneath the building. They just needed a map archived in the District Council to isolate it from the whole city. We arrived after them but Nicole finds the map first... an old paper map. He finds a screwdriver in a closet and takes it. ETHAN (Slower) They saw us when we left and these motherfuckers burned her They chased and trapped me before I called you and I lied to survive. Be careful at who you talk to, these guys play double. He finds an axe behind a toolbox on a shelf. ETHAN (Looking at the camera) Don t know why they let me alone, or if you send agents, but I can t wait for any of them. Meet me at Emma s. Love you sis. Ethan smiles to the camera. While Annie speaks on the radio, we see Ethan, who died during the viewing. The squad s members are looking to each other. Behind them, Manhattan is visible through the window. Annie (by radio / She s running, confused and stressed) Fuck, it s so empty here, they should have find the map in Nicole s bag. We have a new mission guys, we have to save The Division! Take my brother and meet me at 17

18 The communication ends while in the city, a big explosion destroyed what we understand to be the base. END OF THE MISSION At the end of the mission: - We don t exactly know where Annie was during the explosion and if she survived. - The squad is all alone. Communication between agents is too risky. - The players have to build a new base of operation (helped by a third Division wave?) - The Vision is still operating. John Karmitz was not the leader. After the Mission: - In his message, Ethan ask Annie to meet him at Emma s It might be a start. 18
