5 5 I.T.T.H.C Treasure News Page 5 Bobby Crocker Winning Recipe NO-BAMA CAKE Baked by Bruce Martin I used sugar cookie dough for my crust. You can either use the frozen sugar cookie dough in a roll or a packaged sugar cookie dough. Place it in the bottom of a glass baking dish. Mine was 9x13. I then cooked it as directed on the package. I tried to under cook it just a little so that the crust would not be hard. I had forgotten to pick up a non stick spray for the pan and without it the crust stuck just a little. I then mixed 3 x 8 oz packages of cream cheese with some real vanilla and powdered sugar. Roughly I used 1/2 cup sugar for ea package of cream cheese and enough vanilla to satisfy my taste buds. I allowed the cream cheese to soften before I mixed the ingredients. You have to slow mix the filling or your bowl will fly across the room since the cream cheese is so thick. I then placed the filling on the cooled crust and then placed it in the fridge overnight. I then placed the "Fresh" fruit on the whole thing in the morning. I have found if you use frozen fruit then the fruit thaws and gets a little runny. PS: actually the pie tastes better the 3rd day for some reason I think the filling softens the crust with some time and makes it better. From Left to Right: Rachel Hayworth (chairperson); Second Place John Hayworth; First Place - Bruce Martin; Third Place - Ken Fanning. MANY THANKS TO RACHEL AND THE TASTING CREW FOR DOING THIS. NEWSLETTER ARTICLE CONTEST FOR 2012 During the year 2012 I am going to have a contest for those that send me the most articles that can be used in the monthly newsletter. The articles need to be on some aspect of metal detecting or treasure hunting such as tips on how to do something, tips on technique, new equipment you have tried, personal experience, finds that you think are pretty cool, comments about something relating to the subject. I will keep tabs on who sent what and at the end of the year a prize will be given to the top three donors that participated. The prizes will be: First Place a one ounce Silver Eagle. Second Place a silver half. Third Place a silver quarter. The deadline for December will be November 28th. If you don t make the deadline go ahead and issue it and I will put it in next month. The winners will be announced at the December Christmas Party. Contest results so far: Let s see your name on the list.. 6 6 I.T.T.H.C Treasure News Page 6 ITTHC Fall Hunt ITTHC (Members Only) Hunt It was great weather a bit windy but a fun hunt. Many thanks to Hunt Chairman Cody Reese and Co-Chairman Wally Dick along with Jim Nobles - Prize Chairman; Rachel Hayworth - Bobby Crocker Chairman and their judges; and Gary Young - Kid s Hunt Chairman. In this hunt the 33 members that signed up to hunt could share in the $300 in prizes purchased by the club, plus all the silver and club donated prizes. This year the Silent Auctions helped increase the amount of silver coins for the hunt by nearly $263. There were 58 hunt prizes and 375 dimes for all to find during the hunt. Just as a side note Bob Cook did very well. He found 22 Silver Dimes, 5 prize tokens, a left over Silver Walking Liberty Half Dollar, way to go Bob. Thanks to all who donated items to the auction. Terry Humphries said it best - The food was wonderful and there was plenty for everyone. The Deep Competition was enjoyed by five worthy opponents and the results are: 1st Place: Lloyd Coke : 9 Quarters & 0 Dimes for 9 points winning $ nd Place: John Hayworth : 3 Quarters & 1 Dime for 6 points winning $ rd Place: Wally Dick : 2 Quarters & 1 Dime for 5 points. 4th Place: Ken Fanning : 3 Quarters & 0 Dimes for 3 points. 5th Place: Mat Fortney : 1 Quarter & 0 Dimes for 1 point. The Kids hunt was ran by Gary Young There were 5 kids in this hunt and 30 prize tokens and a lot of change including some half dollars. All of the kids had a terrific time & thought it was a fabulous hunt! In fact, it took them going out three different times to gather up 29 of the 30 prizes. The 50/50 was ran by Jean Dick The winner of $61.00 was new member John Boomgaard Thanks to everyone for making this a great event! Cody Reese & Wally Dick
7 7 I.T.T.H.C Treasure News Page 7 MEMBER DONATED ARTICLES WANT TO SELL YOUR OLD GOLD JEWELRY FOR MELT VALUE? submitted by Lee Wierzchowski Here's a place that will pay you 92% of Spot Price. Check out the Web Site. I haven't been able to find a better value anywhere. ARA, American Recycling Associates down in Texas. *************************************************************************** Returning Lost Items ssubmitted by Lee Wierzchowski Here is a good thought offered by Andy Sabisch a few years ago. Have you ever returned a ring or some other item you recovered in your searches? Did you simply hand it to the person and leave with a sense of satisfaction? Well, most local newspapers are always looking for a good human interest story and a story of a lost valuable being returned years or decades after it was lost is a perfect storyline. If you have a something that you are able to return, call the local paper and coordinate returning it with the paper. A positive article showing you returning a ring to someone that thought they would never see it again will leave a positive image with scores of readers (including the lawmaker that may be approached in a year or two by those trying to close an area. **************************************************************************************** A WORD OF CAUTION submitted by Lee Wierzchowski Detectorists are understandably proud of what they find in the field. But when they make posts on the many treasure-hunting related forums about historically significant finds they have made, show photos of sites that are easily recognizable, or even mention that the finds came from public grounds that are in fact protected, is it any surprise that non-detectorists, such as archeologists and historians that frequent these forums as well, are willing and able to enact restrictions which further limit when and where we can search? Be careful what you say or show and where you post it.
8 8 I.T.T.H.C Treasure News Page 8 MEMBER DONATED ARTICLES cont d TUMBLE TIME submitted by Lee Wierzchowski Water hunting is about done for the season. So I went out to the garage and looked at the bags of dirty, corroded coins. It was time to do something with them. Here's part of an article from an old Western & Eastern Treasures magazine that mentions my cleaning method. I've tried many shortcuts in attempting to clean modern coins but none have worked as well as a rock tumbler. Before I go further, for the benefit of those new to the hobby, it bears repeating that you should never clean a coin that has possible collector value. If you have found coins minted prior to 1964, be sure to familiarize yourself with "key date" coins and don't attempt to do any cleaning on them whatsoever. Common date older coins with little collector value may be cleaned so they display nicely, but when in doubt, hold off cleaning any questionable coins. Though originally designed to tumble rocks for the lapidary hobby, rock tumblers do an excellent job cleaning coins. I own an older Lortone single barrel 3 lb. capacity tumbler, but there are many to choose from on the Internet. There are double-barrel tumblers and tumblers that hold up to 12 lbs. of material. There are also vibrating tumblers, but I have no experience with those. The larger capacity of the drum, the more coins can be cleaned at one time. A good unit will cost upwards of $50. *************************************************************************** USING A ROCK TUMBLER submitted by Lee Wierzchowski You got yourself a rock tumbler to clean your coins. Now, what do you do with it? First you'll need a medium with which to clean the coins. My favorite combo is dish soap, water, a level teaspoon of coffee grounds and aquarium gravel. Don't use any cleaners that effervesce. You could blow the lid off of your tumbler. You may want to separate pennies from the rest of the coins since the copper they contain will impart a pinkish hue to the clad coins when tumbled together. Don't overload the tumbler. If yours is a 3 lb. capacity like mine add about 100 coins, a cup of gravel, a few squirts of the dish soap, a teaspoon of coffee grounds and enough water to cover the mixture plus an inch or so. Then tumble the coins for 3 to 5 hours. Be sure to check periodically to make sure there are no leaks in the seal or you'll have a mess on your hands. If the tumbler isn't rotating smoothly, put a drop of oil on each of the bearings and make sure you haven't overfilled the drum or it may be too heavy and you'll need to remove some of the contents. After a couple of hours, you'll want to check the progress by inspecting some of the coins. If they look good to you, dump the contents into a strainer and rinse with water. Lay the coins
9 9 I.T.T.H.C Treasure News Page 9 MEMBER DONATED ARTICLES cont d out to air dry, pat the top with paper towels, and prepare to be amazed at how clean and new they look! Thanks to Amy Maruso of Western & Eastern Treasures for some of the points I've included. ***************************************************************************
