2 The Secretary s Report General Meeting - May 7th, 2002 of the Three Forks Treasure Hunters Club The meeting started at 7:30pm with 33 people in attendance. We had four visitors at the meeting this month. Two of them were friends of Brent Edmonds they were Anthony Brogdon and Stephanie Taylor. One was a guest with Rochelle Starr his name was Donald Nunn. And next was Randall Vogt from Muskogee who heard about the club from our national hunt ad in the Eastern/Western Magazine he is also our new member - welcome to the club. President Nancy Coffey started the meeting off by telling what a nice National Hunt we had even though attendance was off from last year we still had 240 entries and a very good time this year. She remarked what a very good job Gary Young had done with the kids hunt. She also had a very nice award for Randy Smith of Treasure Electronics for donating to the club again the detector for the national hunt drawing. Next she called Ken Dotson to the front and presented him with a lifetime membership award for all the time he has put in to help our club thru the years. He is moving to Colorado in the near future and will be missed much at our meetings we hope he will be able to visit us back here often. Next Treasurer Carol Cooper read the treasurers report saying we have a total of $4, in the clubs funds with in the general fund, 2, in the national hunt fund. The top sellers for the Detector Drawing were Red Cawvey and Jerry Harlin receiving gold coin prizes. Then the President turned the meeting over to Francis Tracy for the amateurs find of the month awards which had six entries this month. FOR ALL WATER HUNTERS AND ANYONE ELSE DETECTING ON OUR LAND MANAGED BY THE ARMY CORP OF ENGINEERS Below is some good advice from Keith Wills our Treasurer of the FMDAC South Central Chapter. I have printed a copy of The regulations on the next page of this Newsletter. The SOUTH CENTRAL Chapter Forum Do you have your copy of the Corps permission and Posted By: K. Wills <mailto:kwills@worldnet.att.net?subject=do you have your copy of the Corps permission and> Date: Wednesday, 8 May 2002, at 1:19 a.m. If you have not received a copy of the rules and permission for hunting designated areas of Corps of Engineers properties yet, then go to my website at: or me to mail you a copy at no cost. This should be in your truck, car or motor home wherever you go if you hunt swimming beaches and swimming areas of Corps property. Too many times has the Corps hire temporary rangers for the summer and these rangers are not informed of the national policy of metal detecting of public use areas of the park. It is also known that many of these temporary rangers have been taught to dislike detectorist by the archeology classes they have taken in school. Thus a simple copy of the permission and rules will save you from having a bad day instead of a great day. Happy hunting and let's all follow the rules, please. Keith

9 The FMDAC Round Table Forum Images (long) Posted By: Larry Armstrong Date: Tuesday, 30 April 2002, at 11:58 a.m. I wish I knew how much money the archaeologists spend on their image - and perhaps how much of that money goes towards tainting the image of detectorists. Have you ever wondered how the media always seems to be able to get its hands on plenty of bad press about detecting on public (and even private) lands? It occurs to me that someone else is painting MY image - not me. I don't think I like that. Archaeologists certainly have no shortage of stories showing a one-sided view of detectorists use of "public" (and private) lands. Archaeologists seem to be able to come up with plenty of fodder that taints the image of detectorists. We detectorists are portrayed in a bad light. But how on earth do they manage to convince a large segment of the public to believe this garbage when only a few "Bad Apples" are guilty? How can they be so manipulated into believing that these detectorists who are shown abusing the rights of the public represent the actions of all members of the hobby? The simple answer is that only one side of the coin is shown. I suggest thinking of your image the same way you think of your reputation or your integrity. Most all of us will go to extremes to protect our reputation, credibility, integrity, and honor. Well, our "image" should get equal protection. It's time to find ways to enhance (and protect) our image. I can see several steps we (all of us) need to take. Self-policing...That's the first step. Don't allow someone to violate the rules. Stop them. Correct the situation on the spot. If they have jumped the fence and are hunting a restricted area, call the appropriate officials and turn them in. Education is the second step. Share your knowledge of responsible use and how to protect the land that we hunt upon. If you need to know more, take the effort to learn more. Become informed so that you can inform others. The third step is improving our image. Groups, clubs, organizations and individuals need to spend sometime on enhancing our image. Send pictures of someone returning found rings and other items to the newspaper. Write a rebuttal every time that you see a derogatory story about detectorists in the news. Make sure that your club had a committee to assist the police when needed and be sure that the press is aware of it. There are only a few ideas. You can think of many more. Being proactive is the forth step. If we spent only ¼ of the time developing image-building ideas as we do planning a planted hunt, we'd probably be light years ahead. We may have to get "outside the box" and think along different lines. I suggest we get ahead of the curve and develop ways to enhance our image, so as not to always be reactionary. We also need to work with manufacturers who put ads in magazines and help them be proactive with us. We need manufacturers putting brochures into the package of each new unit sent out. We need dealers hammering the proper methods of retrieval and where to and not to hunt to every customer. I feel my honor, my integrity, and my reputation are on the line when someone portrays my image as "bad." Our image is who we are to most people. Perception becomes a reality. I'm tired of someone else telling me what my image is. It's time we took control.
