MONTHLY REPORT SILVER, LEAD AND ZINC PRODUCTION IN CANADA, MAY, SILVER - The Dominion Bureau of Statistics at Ottaia reporta that Canada produced 1,352,58 ounces of silver in May as compared with 1,488,350 ounces In April and 1,419,146 ounces in May, Production during the first five months of 1937 totalled 7,212,785 ounces; this represented an advance of 6.2 per cent over the output In the corresponding period of the preceding year. Silver averaged cents per ounce on the New York market (Handy & Harman),in Canadian funds, during May; the April average price was cents per ounce. Based on these prices the Canadian output during the two months was worth 608,133 and $675,666, respectively. Canada exported 1,296,771 ounces of silver bullion in May as against 947,879 ounces in April. The May exports consisted of 606,246 ounces shipped to Great Britain, 472,580 ounces to the United States, and 219,945 ounces to British India. Silver in ore, concentrates, etc., exported from Canada in May amounted to 247,907 ounces; in Aoril, 100,123 ounces were exported. Imports of silver bullion into Canada in May totalled 216,368 ounces of which Great Britain supplied 130,090 ounces and the United States, 86,278 ounces. In April, 83,539 ounces were imported. The American Bureau of Metal Statistics estimates the world output of silver in May at 21,545,000 ounces as compared with 20,505,000 ounces in April. The United States production in hy was 2.8 per cent lower at 5,280,000 ounces. Mexico produced 6,543,000 ounces or 14.2 per cent above the April total. During the period January to May, 1937, Canada's lead output advanced 9.8 per cent to 167,162,552 pounds from the total for the corresponding months of Lead quotations on the London market averaged cents per pound in Canadian funds, at which price the Canadian production during the month was worth 1,803,156. The April average price was cents per pound and the value of the month's output was 1,918,403. Pig lead exports from Canada in May totalled 36,292,700 pounds; during the preceding month, 21,859,100 pounjs were exoorted. Exports of lead in ore, concentrates, etc., from Canada in May were recorded at 1,459,700 pounds as against 256,300 pounds in the previous month. The world output of refined lead in May reached a total of 157,930 tons as compared with 153,977 tons in April. The United States output in May declined 3,716 tons to 40,192 tons. This falling-off together with a slight increase in deliveries resulted in a decline of 12,619 tons in surplus stocks during May to a total of 115,843 tons. Refined lead stocks in the United States have recorded a steady decline since July, 1936, when 231,031 tons were on hand. Mexico produced 20,235 tons in May or 6.1 per cent below the April total. An advance of 18.9 per cent was recorded in the Australian output during the month when 22,324 tons were produced as against 18,779 tons in Anril. ZINC - Canada produced 31,649,474 pounds of zinc in May; during April, 33,121,107 pounds were produced while in May, 1936, the output was 29,629,858 pounds. During the first five months of 1.37 the Canadian production totalled 136,537,593 pounds or 6.9 per cent above the output a year ago. The average price of zinc on the London market in May was cents per pound, in Canadian funds, at which price the Canadian output during the month was worth 1,604,533. The April average price was cents per pound and the value of the month's output was l,903,139. Exports of zinc spelter from Canada in May advanced to 27,676,700 pounds from the April total of 12,850,900 pounds. Zinc in ore, concentrates, etc., exported in May amounted to 6,548,200 pounds; in the preceding month none was exported. The world production of zinc in May rose to 163,006 tons from the April total of 157,001 tons. Output in the Onited States totalled 55,012 tons as compared with 52,009 tons In April. The Belgium and Netherlands production amounted to 23,500 tons; In the preceding month, 22,900 tons were produced. The United States stoccs of zinc on May 31st were recorded at 13,774 tons; this represented a decrease of 189 tons during the month. Business on the books of United States producers at the end of May totalled 67,143 tons as compared with unfilled orders of 81,448 tons on April 30th. The official warehouses of the London Metal Exchange contained 20,928 tons of zinc on May 29th as compared with 20,287 tons at the beginning of the month.
