1 The Barbarian Tribes that Invaded the Roman Empire Chapter 1 Cut out the title page and the full booklet on the second page. Fold the book in with two folds, with the full front piece on top and the dotted line piece inside. Cut across the dotted lines and have your child write the names of the barbarian tribes that invaded Rome on each separate flap. If desired have your child narrate something to you and write it across the two blank inside pieces that remain. Glue the middle section to your lapbook. 3 Cut out this shape as ONE PIECE. Fold on each solid line. Use the first section for your title page and the last page for gluing as marked. You will have 4-6 spaces inside for writing. (Glue here) Have your child write the key words for each chapter on each shape, and draw a picture to go with them or have them narrate a brief definition of the word for you to write down. Glue the back of the last section to your lapbook. Words to use: Bards (a drawing of a music note or a person singing) Vortigern (a drawing of a crown or of a king) Anglo-Saxons (a number seven or a rough map of the divided land) Dark Ages or Middle Ages (a drawing of a book with a X through it to show no written records) The Story of Craith (with a drawing of feet, eyes, and ears to show the warrior s gifts) Barbarians (drawings of blue painted swirls or of a Celtic barbarian) Things from Early Britain Chapter 2 Chapter 2. 5 Cut out the eight rectangles as ONE SHAPE. Follow the directions for folding and cutting a Hot Dog Book (found here). Cut out the cover of the book and glue on to the front. A Book about Monks Chapter 3 Have your child make a book about monks. Have them decorate their book with gold pens. Glue the element into the lapbook. Have them add 6 of the following points to the pages of the hot dog book: They worked as furniture makers. They made books. They were teachers. They worked with medicine. They lived in a monastery. They spent time praying. They spent time studying the Bible. They didn t get married. Chapter 2. Susan Wise Bauer or

6 Cut out the T-shape as one piece. Fold left side in. Fold right side in. Fold top down. Cut out the cover of the book and glue on to the front. Have your child fill in the variety of things found in Constantinople, there will be room for 6. Shops, churches, palaces, people in togas, roads, schools. 7 Ajanta Caves Chapter 5 The caves are known as the Ajanta caves. A fresco is a painting made on wet plaster. The monks of India followed the teachings of Buddha. The decorated the caves with sculptures out of stone and painted frescos on the walls. Chapter 5. Susan Wise Bauer or

8 Some of the monks lived in caves. They cracked cliffs with swollen logs to dig caves in them. Two soldiers hunting tigers rediscovered the Ajanta caves. Cut out shapes. Have your child write in the five pillars of Islam: Believe that Allah is the one true God, Pray to Allah five times a day, Give away part of your money every year to the needy, Do not eat or drink in the day time during Ramadan, Try to go to Mecca at least once in your life. 12 Cut out the large rectangle and fold on the dotted line. Cut out the three matchstick books separately. World Religions from the Middle Ages Chapter 7 The name of the religion goes on the front page of the matchbook. The name of the place goes on the top inside page and the name of the person goes on the bottom inside page. Answers: Buddhism, India, Buddha Islam, Mecca (Arabian desert), Muhammad Christianity, Israel (Jerusalem), Jesus There are four cover sections to cut out, three for the matchbooks which will be pasted inside the larger book and one for the large book. Your child needs to supply the following information: the three major religions that have been covered so far in volume two, the country or city that the religious originated from and the founding figure from that religion. 19 The Golden Age of China Chapter 8 Cut pocket out. Fold back flap up and wrap side flaps around the back and glue down. Glue the back of your pocket into your lapbook. Cut out cover square and glue to the front of your pocket. Cut out the eight shapes to go inside the pocket. You can use the blank ones and have your child write on them the list that follows OR use the pre printed ones and have your child simply cut them out and slide them in. 22 You may want to print each page on a different color of paper; it will make your layered book fun and interesting! Cut out the rectangle on each page. Stack together with the smallest on top and the largest on the bottom. Staple at the top. On each page have your child fill in one (or more) fact about each country from chapter nine. Have your child illustrate the fact if desired. For example: Korea is a peninsula, surrounded by water on three sides Japan is made up of four large islands. Open up the matchbooks and glue a continent to the top inside of each book. Have your child write the name of the continent on the inside bottom portion. Fold the pocket up and glue into lapbook. 29 What empire did Tariq belong to? When Spain was under Islamic rule what did the Spanish followers of Islam become known as? What was the rock that Tariq stood on when he watched his ships come in called? He belonged to the Islamic Empire and was a Muslim commander. The sons of the dead king of the Visigoths invited him to help them drive out Rodrigo who had taken over the throne. It was called Jabal Tariq and now we call it the rock of Gibraltar. The Islamic Empire in Spain Chapter 12 What did Tariq order his armies to do when they arrived in Spain? Who invited Tariq to Spain? They were called Moors. He told them to burn their boats because they would take over the land or die trying. Cut out large shape and fold like a W (fold like a fan so the end makes a W outline). Glue the inside section together (the dotted lines will be glued back to back). Cut along the dotted lines. Cut out the individual rectangles with the questions and answers. Glue the questions to the front flaps; glue the answers to the back flaps. Glue the large back section of the element to the inside of your lap book. Glue back of element to the lapbook. Write the six facts about Charlemagne on the inside of the six flaps He had more copies of the scriptures made. He built new roads and bridges. Cut dotted lines. Fold outside flaps in. There will be four different sections to write on. Cut out the title and glue to one of the outside squares. Glue to lapbook. Have your child write in the words or a sentence that matches each inside title sentence/title using the key on the left. Add pictures to outside. Chapter 13. Fold each book in half on the dotted line (three small books and one large book) so that the picture and title are on the outside. 34 On the inside of each mini book have your child write (or narrate) something about each group of people. For example: Kings gave land to the knights that fought for them. Knights gave land to the serfs so they would farm for them. Knights lived in castles and ate fancy meals. Serfs lived in villages in small houses and ate simple food. Feudalism Chapter 16 Chapter 16. 35 Cut out the large shape in one piece. Fold the left side in, fold the right side in. Cut along the two horizontal lines, separating the Christians/Muslims and Muslims/Jews. On the back of the flaps help your child write why Jerusalem was important to each group of people, using the text below as a guide. Cut out the cover piece and glue to the front. Glue the back of the middle panel to your lap book. The flaps are enclosed in the middle of the book. Jerusalem was important to the. Christians because that is where Christ was crucified. Muslims because that is where Muhammad ascended from a rock inside the city. The Crusades Jews because that it was the city of David and it was where the holy temple ruins were.
