This booklet contains the following panes printed by Cartor or ITVF in litho. The Machin pane has solid, non-gradated A phosphor bands as expected with a litho printing. All other panes are all over A phosphor [AOP]. Pane 1 5p brown x 4, NVI 1st (gold?) x 2, 76p rose x 2 Machins + KGV central label; A fluor; elliptical perfs C/L A Pane 2 NVI 1st x 2, 1.10 Aerial Post commemoratives A fluor; standard perfs AOP C/L A Pane 3 69p x 2, 1.00 Aerial Post commemoratives A fluor; standard perfs AOP C/L A Pane 4 50p Windsor Castle x 4 definitive (intaglio; rest of pane in litho); A fluor; standard perfs AOP ITVF/Int A Pane 1 is the first Machins pane printed by Cartor in litho, so all of the stamps are new. The phosphor bands on the 5p brown fluoresce bright red under UV, whilst the rest fluoresce bright whitish blue. All have elliptical perforations. The shade of the NVI 1st (gold) is closer to olive green than gold. see The 76p stamp is a new denomination. comments All stamps except the 5p have an iridescent overlay with embedded below MPIL M11L code. The overlay is very weak and hard to see. The commemorative stamps in Panes 2 & 3 appear in the M/S but, as is the practice with SG, are likely to be accorded separate catalogue status. Stamps from the PSB pane have white perf tips; those from the M/S are yellow. The 50p Windsor Castle stamp from Pane 4 has appeared previously in the 2005 Castles M/S. However, the one from the PSB is new having a bright buff tinted background (lemon?), whereas the 2005 stamp is on a pale tinted background. The gums from each source also vary in texture. The perforations are identical. New stamps from the booklet (premium priced): 5p, NVI 1st, 76p Machins 1st, 68p, 1.00, 1.10 Aerial Post commemoratives 50p Windsor Castle definitive

Given the enormity and colours of the Machin range, endless opportunities for a colourful and attractive sheetlet abounded. Alas, the opportunity is lost. The sheet contains a new stamp for the Machin specialist. 0. The iridescent over lay contains two codes: AMII located on the second top row to the left of the Queen's diadem. The second code is MMIL also located on the second top row but to the right of the Queen's diadem. This is a new code with the M indicating Mini-sheet, with the AM code possibly standing for Arnold Machin. Consequently, it is ironic that this item had to be separately ordered as Royal Mail regards it as a sheetlet -- not a M/S! Confused? Q4 11 DISPATCH GB Centenary of UK Aerial Post PSB - further comments It now transpires that Pane 4 was not wholly printed by Cartor, which does not have an intaglio press. The stamps were printed by the former French Government Printing Works at Perigeux known as ITVF [Imprimerie des timbres-poste et valeurs fiduciaires] in intaglio, and the rest of the pane by Cartor in litho. The yellow overprint to the stamps was also applied by Cartor as was the AOP. The die used for the prior corresponding M/S stamp was not used, but was re-engraved for the PSB. The tragedy for collectors is that they were available ONLY from the two machines at the show and not from any other source. This means they are not available from Tallents House. This is reminiscent of the corporate overprint M/S from last year. Why Royal Mail persists with this poor service standard in what is a highly competitive new issue market, is difficult to fathom International Year of Chemistry booklet (sa) NVI P International Year of Chemistry, ex booklet (sa) GB Retail Booklets (self adhesive) All booklets have the printers name removed from the back cover in line with Royal Mail's new policy. All are backstamped with the Forestry Stewardship Council logo [FSC] which indicates the product is produced from renewable forestry resources. The FSC is an independent non-goverment organization which promotes the responsible management of the world's forests. Given that we are not getting any younger regrettably it may not be the last. But let's hope it is. Post has now taken this one step further by issuing their own "special event" Picture Postage stamps. In the last two months of 2011, we have seen no less than four such issues, all unannounced, and all well above their face value of 59 per stamp. Whilst we can appreciate the extra cost of personalising such stamps for individuals, there is no justification for a premium for the CP stamps for what are essentially just normal printed issues. There is no personalisation. Furthermore, these stamps are only available in sheets of 21 for collectors and sheets of 40 for corporate customers. This means that we are left with an unsaleable surplus of premium priced issues. For example, the face of the Winnipeg Jets issue is 3 x 59 = $1.77. They were issued at $ over double face! What is even more alarming is the statement by the CP Director of Stamp Services that Picture Postage issues permit recognition of immediate events and milestones. In other words, expect more of the same -- many more!! This smacks of the France La Poste self adhesive issues which are only issued in sheets and aimed squarely at the corporate market. Philatelic quantities are not available. In addition, CP now seems bent on having at least one M/S for almost every issue, on top of sheet stamps, coils and booklet stamps. Consequently, CP has gone from a very modest issuance postal administration to one now dominated by quantity and philatelic avarice. Thus it is now on our new issues death list. We will no longer be buying above face issues and, from 2012, will supply only those issues supplied in quarterly packs. We will assess the situation towards the end of Q1-12 with a view to dropping new issues totally.
