(4) G/F A/B Ex Lot 591 2/6d both shades, 5/- both shades, 10/- to 2 (creased) & 3 (diagonal pencil line) SG 195a & bb, 196a & ab, 197a-200a & 202a, some minor blemishes, all postally used, the 10/- 1 2 & 3 all with 'WALLAROO' squared-circle, undercatalogued at [Gibbons' "used" prices are for CTO stamps from presentation sets. Postally used examples of the higher values are much scarcer, most of them being from ore sample parcels from the Wallaroo Copper Mines. 3 Page:3 Website: Jun 29, C A- Lot large-part linen parcel tag endorsed "Without letter/from" & oval 'WALLAROO SMELTING WORK 27DEC00/SA' cachet in violet on the face, to "Royal Mint/Melbourne" with exceptional franking of 1 blue x2 & 2 horizontal pair (!) - the only multiple known to us - plus 5d 1/- & 2/- all tied to the reverse by 'WALLAROO' squared-circles, 'R'-in-circle h/s & light Melbourne arrival d/s, minor blemishes/creasing. A wonderful item proving postal usage of the 1 & 2 and, in our opinion, the best item in the collection. [NB: Gibbons don't provide an "on cover" pricing factor for any denominations in the 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' series...even the 2/6d is extremely rare on postal article] This is also an important rates item. The maximum weight the Post Office would accept at concessional parcel rates was 11 pounds. In excess of that weight, the letter rate applied to the entire weight. In this case, the postage of 6/3/5d represented the inter-colonial letter rate of 2d per ½oz x739 for a parcel weighing 23 pounds 1½oz = 10.4kgs approximately. 4,000

[These were the only denominations prepared in this fashion] (5) V A B1 Lot WITH "DUMB" QUARTER-CIRCLE: 2 Venetian red SG 200a, Cat 500. In 1903, all mint remainders of the 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' series were sent to the Commonwealth Stamp Printer (JB Cooke) in Melbourne. In 1905, small numbers of the 2 to 20 were cancelled with the 'MELBOURNE' CTO datestamp that had no inscription at the base, & from which the dateslugs were removed, for inclusion in presentation sets. The fact that no examples of the lower values being so-treated have been recorded suggests that only values from 2 were actually sent to Melbourne. 400 Lot V A+ B1-50/- brownish red SG 201a, full o.g., Cat 650. [NB: Gibbons states that all values were originally issued on However, this sheet indicates the 2/6d & 5/- were both issued earlier, on Gibbons also states that the 5 brown was issued in 1896, but on this sheet the date of issue is given as "May 1895" in manuscript] 1,000
