4 Introduction All children love hands-on activities. It makes sense to carry that passion into our school days. What better way to introduce history, not only chronologically, but in a fashion that allows your child to be creative...in their own unique way, as God intended us to be. If your child has never scrapbooked, they will need to follow the Activity Ideas to help get their creative juices flowing! However, you ll be amazed at how quickly they ll catch on and come up with their own ideas. I bet they ll even begin to research additional facts on their own! It s always a joy to see my co-op students walk through the door with a big grin on their face, proudly announcing that they d found other events that happened during a specific time period! As homeschooling parents we tend to lean towards the traditional curriculum. It s time to think outside of the box and spark the interests of our children. Your homeschooling years will prove to be so much more joyful and rewarding. I always enjoy seeing the various works of art. 6 How to Use This Book I debated as to how I would approach the layout for this book. I wanted to make it as simple and user-friendly as possible. I m not one for reading page after page of instructions so I ve written what you need to know and the rest will fall into place. In addition to creating a scrapbook, activities other than scrapbooking are provided to further enhance the lessons. Most activities are intertwined with your scrapbooking content. Whether you choose to use all or just a few ideas is entirely up to you. The complete course is designed to fulfill a year s worth, if not several years worth of history. Each lesson covers two to three years, depending on the number of events. One lesson can take one or two weeks depending on your choice of activities. This allows ample time for researching and collecting items to include in your pages. Lessons are divided into five sections: Fast Facts & Inventions, Activity Ideas, Reproducible pages, & Layout Ideas. Please be sure to look ahead at lessons, as there will be some preparation on your part. Items in the Activity Ideas section that are red are items that you may need to purchase. Orange items are those that are included in your kit. Black bolded items are items that are located in the Consumables section. There is an Activity Planning Sheet provided at the end of each lesson. Use this to write out the activities you will do as well as any preparation notes you may need. All consumables are in black and white within each lesson. They are given to you as a reference to follow when using the color copies in the back. Each section begins with Fast Facts & Inventions, which provides a listing of historical events that I have chosen to use for this scrapbook. You can substitute at anytime; of course, all of the work has already been done for you! Please be aware that the Reproducible pages will contain most, if not all of the Fast Facts provided. It would be best to introduce and review all of the Fast Facts at the beginning of each lesson. Have your child make a Timeline of Inventions to help visualize the progress throughout history. (see Layout Ideas of the first lesson) The next section provides Activity Ideas for several grade levels. I didn t put specific levels on each only because many children can do advanced projects despite their grade level. Since you are the teacher, use your best judgment. Activities vary and may require Internet usage, researching & writing, art projects, listening to a selected piece, vocabulary, or performing an occasional experiment. As you can see, scrapbooking envelops many areas of study and can be beneficial to both the student and the teacher. All activities are planned to be included in your scrapbook. The Reproducible section provides worksheets that coincide with the lessons. (Not all lessons will contain reproducible activities) The Layout Ideas section provides sample layouts of each lesson. There are endless ways to create your pages. Please remember to let the child be creative, but also stress that neatness and accuracy is a must. I ve provided samples only to give you an idea of how the material can be displayed. You will notice that I haven t used every Fast Fact on my pages. Again, the content of your pages can include as many of the Fast Facts as you desire SharonCrooks
