Important Information Dates for activities 11 May May 2018 Activity Stations 6 Aim of Program 2018 Highlighting the diverse culture of Japan, the six activity stations will guide students through six cities in Japan. At each station, students will have the opportunity to learn an interesting fact about each city before engaging in a relevant craft activity. After completing the activity, children will gain a stamp for their bag (which will also be their cultural passport). At the table for Saiki, children will learn of our sister city connection and its great significance! 3
(Activity 1) Saiki Sumo Wrestler Craft Activity Rationale: Similar to Gladstone, Saiki City loves its sport! There is a famous sumo wrestler from Saiki City called Yoshikaze. He is our inspiration for this activity. Activity Steps: 1. Children will receive two large round pieces of felt (body) and a small round piece of felt (head) 2. Draw the face of the wrestler on a small round piece of felt 3. Insert pipe cleaners into the arm and leg holes of the sumo wrestler (one piece of pipe cleaner can be threaded through to create both arms and another piece for both legs) 4. Fold them into arms and legs 5. Glue the back felt piece of the sumo wrestler to the front 6. Cut a small triangle of tissue 7. Glue the tissue to the wrestler to create his Mawashi. Activity Courtesy of: Busy Bee Craft, 2012, 4
(Activity 2) Hiroshima Origami Heart/Crane Activity Rationale: Hiroshima is now a centre for peace in Japan. Inspired by the story of Sadako Sasaki, each year, thousands of paper origami cranes are left at the Hiroshima Children s Peace Monument. Other: As cranes are quite difficult to make, there will be two options at this station a crane for the older kids who might have experienced origami before, and a simple heart for the younger children. Steps: Outlined in the examples below. Activity Courtesy of: Martha Stewart Weddings, 2016, 5

(Activity 3) Osaka Cotton Ball Sushi Activity Rationale: Osaka once served as the center for rice trade during the Edo period. It is now known as Tenka no Daidokoro (the nation s kitchen). Steps: 1. Each child receives 1-2 cotton balls 2. Cut different shapes from a selection of different coloured felt (images of different kinds of sushi will be available for inspiration) 3. Glue felt to cotton ball secure cotton ball by wrapping it in a piece of black masking tape. Activity Courtesy of: Marylea, 2017, 7
(Activity 4) Kumamoto Kimono Dress-up Activity Rationale: Kumamoto is fast becoming the fashion capital of Japan. It has recently overtaken Tokyo as the center for fashion. This activity has proven to be very popular and is now a staple for our Children s Day. Image: Children try on Kimonos at Saiki Children s Day 2017, O Connell Gallery, 2017, Photograph: Photopia. 8
(Activity 5) Tokyo Pokémon Card Design Activity Rationale: The birthplace of Pokémon, Tokyo is also the centre for all things popular culture in Japan. In this activity, children have the opportunity to create their own Pokémon and decide its powers, strengths and weaknesses. Steps: 1. Children will receive a blank Pokémon card to fill out 2. In the top section they can draw what their Pokémon would look like 3. Below, they can list the powers, strengths and weaknesses. Activity Courtesy of: Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum This activity was withheld from 2017 to be used in
(Activity 6) Kyoto Ema Votive Tablets Activity Rationale: Kyoto is famous for its many Shinto Shrines. Ema Votive Tablets allow visitors to write down their dreams and wishes and leave them at the shrine. In this activity children can keep their tablets and take them home. The tablets will be made from a foam core sheet and can be decorated with stamps, pens and Japanese paper. Image Courtesy of: 10
