1 NatsNews Academy of Model Aeronautics International Aeromodeling Center, Muncie IN website: Copyright Academy of Model Aeronautics 2013 Editors: Ashley Rauen, Rachelle Haughn, Liz Helms The Kirdas turned the Indoor Nats into a family vacation and have been putting up great flights while having lots of fun. Sunday, August 11
2 Indoor Free Flight Day 4 Recap Day four was a virtual smorgasbord of Indoor selection. The day opened with the continuation of the Scale events. The crowd was also treated to a mass launch known as The Flying Hoard. This event is open to any Scale model that has not won an event. A target time is selected from the hat and the model that flies closest to the target time wins the event. A target time of 42 seconds was drawn and Tim Lavender landed at 44 seconds to win the event. It was great to see so many models in the air together. After Scale concluded the glider pilots were finally able to legally take the floor. The competition at the top has been fierce in Standard Catapult, with several of the usual players finishing in the range. They all still have flights for Sunday, so it is still anyone s game. Kurt Krempetz put up some fights near 80 seconds in Unlimited Catapult, which will likely hold up for the win. In Hand Launched Glider your faithful NatsNews reporter hoped to fly javelin style successfully against the trendier tip-launched models. So far, that strategy has proven flawed at best. Apparently you have to fly javelin more often than once every five years to stay in shape. Kurt Krempetz and John Yost are flying tip launched and sitting in first and second place. Everyone has flights left Sunday so be sure to tune in and see how it all ends up. Once the glider pilots were kicked off the floor the Mylar-covered cruisers again took center stage. On tap for today, and in flight in front of me as I hammer at the keyboard, are Pennyplane, Manhattan Cabin, and F1M. F1M is an international Pennyplane event of sorts, with an added restriction of a maximum rubber motor weight. Manhattan Cabin is going through a renaissance with an increase in participation. Don Slusarczyk currently leads, wait, stop the presses, Larry Loucka just did a 9:54 with an impressive split-s maneuver off of the chain hanging on the ceiling and currently leads the pack. Wait, stop the presses part two! After a broken motor destroyed Walt VanGorder s best model, he assembled another from a part in his box and pulled off an amazing lastminute flight of 9:59 to win Manhattan Cabin with an amazing effort! Today we have also been hosting two staff members from the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Model Aviation editor-in-chief Jay Smith and managing editor Liz Helms have enrolled in the Limited Pennyplane Pro-Am and have been getting guidance from Brett Sanborn and John Kagan. It has been fun to watch as the pros teach their program to the newcomers. Brett s program dubbed the tickle the chains approach of bombing the model into the girders and bouncing around is working to his advantage. John Kagan is teaching a more methodical, reserved approach. It appears that Brett and Jay are going to come away with the best time, but based on smiles it looks like everyone is winning. We are headed down the homestretch of the 2013 United States Indoor Championships/Indoor Nats. People are starting to organize their stuff to make an easy exit. On Sunday morning, the glider guys will have day two to settle the final standings. Also, the most popular event of the week will close the year in grand fashion with Limited Pennyplane.
