WWII was flown in three rounds, and it looked as though it would be Jack McGillivray s P-51 against Richard Miller s P-51. In a show of dominance, Jack s Peanut model flew about twice as long as everyone else in round two, but the guiding forces of Mass Launch are fickle, and Jack broke a motor that took out the front of his model while winding for round three. Suddenly Jeff Runnels F6F Hellcat found itself called to duty. The resulting battle was intense, with Miller s model lower but descending just slightly more slowly. In the end, the F6F s motor pooped out and the P-51 came in on top by mere seconds. Great action! The Coconut Mass Launch featured a slew of gigantic models, thanks in large part to the Smyrna crowd. At the CD s call they simultaneously rose from a rolling takeoff and took to the air. This is a hazardous moment as the Coconuts rise past noggin level (well, hazardous for the models anyway they won t really do too much damage to a person s head). After a few close calls and quick ducks, the game was afoot. Wayne Anderson s airplane was wound for bear, with much more torque than normal. It unfortunately torqued into the ground on launch, but then took to the air again apparently unaware that it was no longer in the contest. Intent on stealing the show, it brushed the scoreboard, climbed all the way to the ceiling, and then made a beeline for the nosebleed seats high on the side. Once all that was done, attention refocused on the remaining airplanes, with Tim Lavender challenging Richard Miller. Miller s Cessna Agro has enjoyed a long winning streak, but his reign looks to be under increasingly serious threat. Tim has been inching closer every year, and this year he missed Miller by less than a minute. Richard celebrated his win, but you could see that he s getting nervous! Several Science Olympiad kids were able to get away during finals week to enjoy the immense expanse of the Mini-Dome. They flew both the rubber-powered and balloonlaunched events, and with unlimited flight attempts there was a lot of flight time logged. Catherine Pilachowski took top honors in the rubber-powered event with a very impressive 4:08. Catherine had set the challenging goal for herself before the event began and worked diligently until she reached it. Tor Voorhees was close behind with 4:01. 2 rounded out the field with flights pushing three minutes. Stuart Hall won the balloon-launch category with a great 2:42. Tor Voorhees was just two seconds back in second place, and Mary Katherine Snow was third with 2:06. The afternoon light stuff gets slightly heavier with the 3.1-gram Pennyplanes and 4-gram Manhattans. Jim Richmond put up an early 17:12 with his recordholding Pennyplane that wound up good enough to hold on for the win, leaving the rest of the field to battle it out for the remaining trophy spots. The next four places were within half a minute of each other. On final tally, Indoor Town USA (aka Colorado Springs) representative Bill Leppard secured second place and Robert Warmann took third with a model sporting color tip plates. After finishing Pennyplane so early Richmond passed the time with his Helicopter, sticking it on the center louvers for 11:11. He got stuck once and, while attempting to retrieve, exploded his balloon right next to the model. Instead of blasting the helicopter to fragments, the shock wave apparently gently nudged it off its perch. Jim has a bit more luck than the rest of us. John Diebolt took second with 7:35. A6 is getting super popular, with 16 entrants this year. The general level of expertise is increasing, too, with the top five finishers breaking the 9-minute mark. Bill Gowen worked his way up to a 9:30 for the win, and Tom Sova got second by just two seconds. This was definitely the year for close finishes. Tem Johnson was third with 9:19, and Emil Schutzel and Brett Sanborn finished with 9:10, leaving Brett in fourth place by virtue of his second-best flight.
