Langley Model United Nations is incredibly excited to host you all at our Model UN conference, VIMUNC V, on March 2 nd - 3 rd, We hope to create a unique experience for each and every one of you this year. This year at VIMUNC V, our goal is to provide an incredible delegate experience through our wide variety of committees and incredible college chairs. Ranging from conventional General Assemblies to unconventional crisis simulations, we know that VIMUNC V will surely be unique! Through our fifteen committees General Assemblies, Specialized Agencies, and Crisis Simulations we are sure that each delegate will be challenged with tackling important issues. From resolving the Syrian Refugee Crisis to combatting eco-terrorism, it is our hope that our topics will stimulate your minds and creativity! Position papers are required in all committees for delegates to be eligible for awards. As it is our fifth annual conference at Langley High School, we are working hard to give all of you the best experience possible. In recent years, our club has expanded exponentially, and we are using our numbers to provide the best crisis staff, typing staff, and hospitality staff possible. Through our conference schedule, we have been able to observe successful conferences held by both high schools and colleges, which we strive to model VIMUNC after. 3 Star Wars the Cl one Wars 2018 Page 3 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Dear Delegates, I hope you're as excited for this committee as I am! I m a huge Star Wars nerd and look forward to watching you all take charge of the Galactic Republic. With that being said, I want to go over some expectations I will have in committee. First and foremost, it is important for each of you to consider the character you have received as a position. You should act as if you were in your character, for example, Obi- Wan would not fall to the dark side and betray the Republic. Before you take any action in committee, you should primarily consider if it fits your character s position. With that being said, I was careful to include several characters that should have different positions than the majority of the characters, in order to encourage more interesting debate. If your character believes that Clone Troopers are disposable and useless, you should bring that to committee, always remember your character s position. I will look favourably on different viewpoints being debated, so stay true to your character, and don t be afraid to voice a controversial opinion. Second, remember the goal of the committee, to achieve a Republic Victory over the Separatists in the Clone Wars. Your goal for the committee is to achieve a Republic Victory, while simultaneously consolidating power and improving your character s position. Finally, delegates should be well versed in all things Star Wars. If you haven't watched the Star Wars movies, A. where have you been and B. You should definitely watch them, or at least the prequels for this committee. I would also recommend watching the Clone Wars TV series, as several of the Characters in the committee originate in the show. 4 Star Wars the Cl one Wars 2018 Page 4 COMMITTEE GOAL: ACHIEVING VICTORY Topic History The Current Galactic Republic was found nearly a millennium ago, following the end of the Galactic Dark Ages, the defeat of the Sith, and the collapse of the Old Republic. Following a brief period of war, several systems across the galaxy banded together and founded the Modern Galactic Republic to replace the fallen Old Republic. The Galactic Senate was formed in order to ensure systems in the Republic had representation in the government, and the capital of the Republic was established on the urban world of Coruscant. The position of Supreme Chancellor was established to preside over the senate and serve as an executive of the Galactic Republic. The Ancient Jedi Order would join the republic in order to serve as peacekeepers and guardians of peace and freedom. The Galactic Republic expanded not through conquest, but instead through diplomatic maneuvering and the allure of trade and economic prosperity. For a Millennium, the galactic Republic would enjoy relative peace, but deep tensions between the wealthy Core Worlds, and the impoverished outer rim began to develop. The First Major conflict under the Galactic Republic was the blockade and subsequent invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation. The Trade Federation was motivated by the taxation of their business by the Galactic Republic, which they had long avoided by utilizing Free Trade Zones in the Galaxy. The Trade Federation utilized an army of B1 Battle Droids in order to surround and control Naboo s Capital of Theed. Two Jedi, Qui-gon Jinn and his Padawan apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi were dispatched to resolve the Blockade. All diplomatic negotiations would fail, and the Jedi fled the planet with Queen Amidala, hiding on the desert world of Tatooine, where they would discover a young Anakin Skywalker, who Qui-Gon Jinn believed to be the chosen one. Unable to find help from the Republic, Queen Amidala returned to Naboo and formed a coalition army with the Native Gungans. Together, alongside the Jedi, the army was able to repel the Trade Federation, but Qui-Gon Jinn perished fighting Darth Maul, a sith who resurfaced alongside the invasion

Due to his inadequacy in dealing with the Crisis, Supreme Chancellor Valorum was disposed by a vote of no confidence in the Galactic Senate and Senator Sheev Palpatine was voted into the office of Supreme Chancellor as his successor. The Galaxy was thrust into turmoil, as the Sith were thought to be extinct, and the invasion of Naboo would be a catalyst for the formation for the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and eventually the Galactic Civil War. Due to the Republic s lack of a formal standing army created problems for the republic as the Civil War raged on. The Jedi, who had served as the peacekeepers of the republic, were far and few between, unable to combat the insurrection of the Confederacy. As a result, a Military Creation act was introduced in the Senate, which would establish a formal standing army to protect the Republic. After an Attempt on now Senator Padme Amidala s Life, Obi-Wan Kenobi launched an investigation, attempting to find the perpetrators of the assassination. Kenobi s investigation lead him to the aquatic world of Kamino, where he discovered the Clone Army, commissioned by deceased Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, as he believed the republic needed proper defenses. Master Kenobi was soon captured by Count Dooku, the leader of the Confederacy, and taken to Geonosis, after following the bounty Hunter Jango Fett to the system. Count Dooku revealed he was behind the assassination attempt on Amidala s life, and Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala journey to Geonosis, and both were captured alongside Obi-Wan. The Senate voted to grant emergency powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, authorizing the use of the Clone Army in order to invade Geonosis in order to destroy the droid army production factories also located on Geonosis. An army of clones, lead by numerous Jedi, invaded Geonosis, rescuing Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Padme. The Invasion of Geonosis by the republic would be the spark that turned the clone wars hot, formally starting military campaigns by both the republic and confederacy. Although the Clone Wars are just starting to fire up, the imminent threat is dangerous. The Republic is the last bit of hope this galaxy has before falling to darkness. It is imperative that each and every single one of you plays your part if the galaxy is to be saved. The future of the Republic and the universe as we know it, is in your hands. May the Force be with you.

How can corruption within the Galactic Republic and its institutions be combated? 3. Which weaknesses might this committee be able to capitalize on to bring about the ultimate demise of the Confederacy? 4. How will the significantly larger droid army in the opposing forces be combated? 5. What specific powers can your character gain to help further the goals of the committee, while strategically pursuing your own interests? 6. What other issues facing with Republic internally might your character like to bring up?
