] by Kassie Kessinger Today's game marks the 34th renewal of the Clemson-Citadel series which began 75 years ago (1 909). The Tigers hold a commanding advantage, including a string of 12 consecutive wins that dates back to The 1931 Bulldog club is the last Citadel crew to lay claim to a Tiger victory winning 6-0 in Florence, SC. Eight seasons have lapsed since the Bulldogs and Tigers clashed, as Clemson romped to a 58-3 triumph in its first game of that '78 campaign. A milestone was reached that day as Clemson clinched its 100th victory in Memorial Stadium. That '78 club went on to compile a worksheet and capture a Gator Bowl Championship. The 58-point outburst by the Tigers remains the second highest point total by a Clemson team in the last 30 years. Four coaches in today's game, including Clemson's head coach Danny Ford and The Citadel's head mentor Tom Moore, were on the same sidelines in the 1978 contest as Ford was the offensive line coach, while Moore coached the Tiger receivers. Clemson's present running back coach Chuck Reedy and the Bulldogs defensive coordinator Danny Smith, also were along Clemson's sideline for the last meeting between these two clubs. Neither Ford nor Moore own a victory over the other's respective school as a head coach. Ford looks to add on to his nine-year Clemson record, while Moore seeks his 37th overall coaching win and 18th at The Citadel. Moore is in four years at The Citadel and in eight seasons as a head coach. The Clemson Tigers enter today's game with a 2-1 overall mark, 1-0 skein in the ACC. After suffering a disappointing season-opening loss at home to Virginia Tech, the Tigers have a two-game win streak after collecting a pair of road wins over No. 10 Georgia (31-28) and Notes of Interest The Citadel marks Clemson's first opponent for the month of October, and if the past is any indication of how Clemson will perform during this month, it could be a month of joy for the Tigers. Since Ford assumed control of the Tiger gridders they are 24-4 during the Halloween month. And over the last nine years the Tigers are 33-4 during this month as they went 9-0 before Ford took over. Clemson's offense has really come of age the last two weeks, and its recent Both head coaches in today's game were members of the successful Tiger staff of Georgia Tech (27-3) last week. Of the 18 seasons in which Clemson has had to play Georgia and Georgia Tech on the road, the Tigers have won both games with the Georgia schools just three times in this century. Clemson turned the trick in 1903 and 1977 and now Danny Ford has had one of his teams whip both Georgia and Georgia Tech on the road in the same season. Coach Ford seems to have little trouble in keeping his team from succumbing to a letdown after a big win. In fact. Ford's record in games that are played the week after Clemson has tied or defeated a top 20 team is The only blemish was at Georgia in after Clemson had knocked off fourth-ranked Nebraska in the Orange Bowl to claim the national championship. success can be attributed to the outstanding play up front. Cited as the Tigers' greatest question mark heading into the season, this brigade of youngsters (only one senior has played so far in one of the three games) has paved the way for Tiger running backs to gain yards per game and rush for six scores. Led upfront by AII-ACC candidate John Phillips at guard, Clemson has gained over 200 yards rushing in each of the last 11 games, setting a school record for consecutive games rushing for at least 200 yards. In fact, Clemson has had at least 200 yards rushing in every game Phillips has started at Clemson. In the previous 10 games to his insertion into the lineup (dating back to 1984), Clemson averaged just 176 yards per game on the ground. Phillips' performance over the last two games has been fantastic. Against Georgia he had a 90 percent grade including 10 knockdown blocks, and at Georgia Tech he graded out a 92 percent with 1 knockdowns and four pancakes. He did not start playing the guard position on a consistent basis until the fifth game in Tailback Terrence Flagler is having his best season as a Tiger. He paces the team in rushing with 220 yards and is a major reason Clemson is 12th in the nation in rushing offense. The native of Fernandina Beach, FL led Clemson to the win over Georgia with 90 yards rushing and 58 in pass receiving. He was the first Clemson player in 1 2 years to lead Clemson in rushing and reception yardage in the same game. Ken Callicutt turned the trick against South Carolina in Terrance Flagler has averaged over 7 yards per carry in the first three games. 2

1. JUIIIIbUII, The Citadel will be looking to keep the ball out of senior Terrance Roulhac's hands on kickoff returns as he broke for 120 yards last week against the Yellow Jackets. His 81 -yard return of the opening kickoff was the longest such return since Hal Davis ran for 98 yards against Georgia during the 1962 season. However, Roulhac's return was the longest play of any type by Clemson since Chuck McSwain s scoring rush of 82 yards against Virginia in Roulhac's 120 return yardage moved him all the way from sixth place to third on Clemson's all-time kickoff return yardage chart. He is third in the nation in kickoff returns this week. Bandit end Terence Mack continues to shine defensively as he has topped the Tigers in tackles two of the three games. He came away with 1 1 stops at Georgia Tech to give him a season total of 25, which ties him with linebacker Norman Haynes in total stops. Mack also broke up two passes last weekend and made one tackle for a loss of two yards. He was the Tigers' leading tackier against Virginia Tech with nine. The Citadel Bulldogs bring a 2-2 mark into Clemson's Memorial Stadium. Their record includes victories over Northeastern (24-14) and Presbyterian (15-13) and losses to North Carolina (45-1 4) and last Saturday's loss at Appalachian State (33-10). Coach Moore, who has led the Bulldogs to back-to-back non-losing seasons, welcomed back 13 starters and 35 lettermen from last year's squad. Prior to the loss at Appalachian State, the Bulldogs' 2-1 start was their best out of the gates since the 1982 season and represented the best start by a Tom Moorecoached team at The Citadel. A major reason for The Citadel's fast start prior to the Appalachian State loss was due in part to the Bulldogs' ability to hold on to the ball. The Bulldogs had gone 210 consecutive offensive plays without a fumble, however, the Mountaineers forced the Bulldogs into four fumbles, three of which ASU recovered. The Citadel is led offensively by senior quarterback Kip Allen, who is on the verge of breaking every passing record in Citadel history. This year he has completed 66 of 129 passes for 705 yards (176.3 yards per game) and thrown five touchdown strikes. He needs just 324 yards to move into second place on The Citadel's all-time passing chart. He already owns individual game and season records for most attempts and most completions. A definite threat in both rushing and receiving is versatile running back Warren McGrier. The pound senior native of Ware Shoals, SC. tops the Bulldogs in rushing with 210 yards on 56 carries, two of which have gone for scores. Now that the Dogs' top receiver, Eric Reddish, is out for the year with an ankle injury, McGrier is Allen's top receiving target. And he has caught 14 Allen passes for 127 yards, including two scoring strikes. McGrier has started and played in all 26 games over the last three seasons. The Citadel's lone 1985 first-team All- Southern Conference performer is back in tackle Scott Thompson. The 6-5, 260- pounder is a pre-season All-America candidate, according to The Sporting News. So far this season he is leading the Bulldogs defense with 70 tackles, just five less than he made all of last season. He has three tackles for loss and has caused 1986 Clemson Statistics (2-1 Overall, 1-0 ACC) 1 nusniny Atl Yds Avg TD R Plianlor ridyicl, TR ID OU Flowers, TB / ID urittin, Id Rod Williams, QB CLEMSON Opponents Passing Alt Comp Int Yds Pet TD Rod Williams Anderson CLEMSON Opponents Receiving Rec Yds Avg TD LG Roulhac, WR Flagler, TB Ray Williams. 8 said don't caught " thought had " " came " by Tim Match mmw^en senior wide receiver Ter- WW ranee Roulhac was a youngster, he remembers the only sport that interested him was basketball. But, one day he was urged to play a game of touch football in front of his house. The other competitors knew Terrance had blazing speed so they encouraged him just to run deep in his very first game. "They threw one long to me and I it," Roulhac said. "And from there on every day I just wanted to play wide receiver." The Tigers have established a tradition of outstanding wide receivers (i.e., Perry Tuttle currently fifth in the CFL in receptions with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Jerry Butler presently with the Buffalo Bills and the San Francisco 49er's Dwight Clark). Roulhac is continuing that tradition at the position he loves. Clemson kept its promise in giving him a shot at the big play position. "I chose Clemson because a lot of schools wanted me to play defensive back," said Roulhac, who was named defensive Player-of-the-Year in Florida his senior season. "At that time I didn't want to play defensive back. Clemson gave me a chance to play the position I wanted to play, and if it didn't work out, then I could have gone to defensive back. Just as Roulhac was in his younger days he is still blessed with lightning speed, as he runs the 40 in 4,47, fourth best on the team. The high school all-state award-winner in track noted, "It's not really raw speed, it's knowing when to make your move and trying to work yourself open. You have to work hard to get open... go for broke every time you come off the ball.' Roulhac utilized his speed and experience during the opening game against Virginia Tech as Clemson quarterback Rodney Williams said he wasn't looking to throw to Roulhac in particular, but he found Terrance for four pass receptions for 56 yards. "I just try to throw to who is " open, Williams. "Roulhac has a good knack for finding the open spot. I think that's the mam reason I find him a lot. He's been out there so long, he knows how to sneak into that open area. It helps me out because if the receiver is not covered. I have to read as much coverage. Roulhac exhibits another aspect of his versatility and speed as an athlete when he lines up at the goal line to receive the OVER FEATUR opposing team's kickoff. Currently, he lists as the Tiger's number-three kickoff return leader of all-time. Roulhac holds a 23-yard return average including a 81- yarder to open the Georgia Tech game last week. It was the longest kickoff return for Clemson since October 1 3, when Hal Davis ran one back 98 yards against Georgia, the last time Clemson has run one back for a TD. Roulhac noted, "We (he and Ray Williams) are aware of that situation. I I one against Terrance Roulhac is approaching the Clemson touchdown reception record. 5 Going Deep Terrance Roulhac has been a big play man since his first game of touch football. Georgia Tech, but we will get one by the end of the season. We've come too close too many times. Roulhac's accomplishments throughout his collegiate career are outstanding. He currently ranks sixth in the Clemson career receptions; fifth in career reception yardage: third in touchdown receptions; fifth in career yards per reception; 18th in career scoring and third in career kickoff return yardage. His career fulfillments earned him pre-season Sporting News All-America honors for Coach Woody McCorvey feels the 1986 season will determine Roulhac's pro future. "I think Terrance is definitely a pro prospect. He ran a 4.47 for the scouts this spring, which is good. But he needs to keep his concentration on this season with Clemson. In order to have a good pro career, he has to play well for us here. But, before graduating from Clemson, Terrance plans to break some of the records set by the past Clemson greats. "It would be nice, exciting and a milestone for " me to break someone's record, said Roulhac. "I've always wanted to break a collegiate record." With any luck at all Roulhac should have that opportunity. His best shot IS with the career touchdown reception mark as he has caught 15 touchdown passes, which places him only three back from Glen Smith's ( ) record of 18. When Roulhac was a star at Raines High School five years ago he caught the eye of many a collegiate scout. Former Clemson receiver coach Lawson Holland remembers his first glance at Roulhac. "I went down to see him when he was at Raines (High School in Jacksonville, FL) and the very first play they lined him up at tight end. I'm sitting in the stands, saying what did Chuck Reedy (who scouts the Florida area) send me down here to see, a 175-pound tight end'' They ran a sweep, then came back and ran a throwback to him out of that two tight-end set and I mean, he just took off! I back and told Chuck that, by golly, the way that kid runs, he can play. It IS fortunate that Roulhac was given the opportunity to play football back in his younger days due to his speed. He went deep in his first game and he s still following the same pattern.

" Spiers " Spiers kick had " ".. and " he " Spiers know Sports feature On, August 21 by Annabelle Vaughan 1 986, a small article in the back of the sports section of The Greenville News read like this: Clemson coach Danny Ford was in search of a punter after his team's double practice session Wednesday. Budget Recruiting Danny Ford recruited his punter through a newspaper story. "We are concerned about our punting situation," said Ford. "I think we need to put an ad in the school paper. If there is a student reading this who can punt, please call me at the office. We aren't looking for any (Dale) Hatchers, just somone who can average about 40 yards v/ith a four-second hang time. Some members of the Clemson baseball team living in an on-campus apartment, saw the article and laughed about it. But one of these baseball players, the shortstop, couldn't seem to get it out of his mind. He thought that he might be able to fulfill Ford's requirements, but knowing that he had to concentrate on baseball, he tried to forget abut it. Finally, the baseball player yards in each of his last two years. Spiers has found out there is much more to punting in college football. " All eyes are on me when I go out to punt, Spiers said. "Each time I is like starting over. It doesn't matter how well I did last time, this kick is the one that matters. My performance can affect the outcome " of the entire game. Spiers found out early in his college punting career that his position is often not a glorious one. His debut came in the Tigers' season opener against Virginia Tech. "I was pretty nervous all week before the game, Spiers remembered. " "But first game jitters come in any sport, I to think about all the times I tried played baseball in front of large crowds and that calmed me down some." After a respectable first punt of 41 yards. Spiers suddenly found himself forced to kick from deep in his own endzone. The Hokies rushed hard, batting the ball down and leveling the Clemson punter. "I know some people might blame me " for the blocked punt, said. "But it's the same as making an error in baseball. If I dwell never succeed. only on the bad things, I'll Spiers said it feels good to be back in football pads. Baseball is still his first love, but after playing for Clemson last spring and in a summer league, he is ready for a break. He hopes to work out a schedule so he can start practicing baseball while continuing to play football. Clemson baseball coach Bill Wilhelm certainly wants Spiers to find some time to work on his hitting. Spiers is a key to the 1987 Clemson baseball team as he is a.345 career hitter and owns the Clemson record for runs scored and stolen bases in a season. He hit.443 over the last 29 games of Since the shortstop became a punter, I he has gotten all kinds of publicity. Tm " not letting it go to my head, reflected. "I try to take it all in stride. I can always get better. I'm never satisfied. There won't be much time for Bill Spiers to go home to Cameron, SC, this year. As soon as football season is over, he'll have to start concentrating on baseball. But Spiers doesn't mind the extra work. "It's a dream come true, said. "I never thought I would get a chance to run down the hill. Now my dream is to go to a bowl game with the football team and to the College World Series with the baseball team. win both! Spiers certainly helped move Clemson in that direction the last two weeks. He had two pressure punts in the Georgia game, then had a 41.3-yard net average at Georgia Tech. He also had two punts inside the 10-yard line, something that had not been accomplished since the days of Dale Hatcher. Perhaps Ford has found another Hatcher. talked to some of his friends on the football team and they convinced him to give it a shot. The next time the football team scrimmaged, the baseball player was one of 26 hopefuls showing Coach Ford how well they could kick. Two days later, he was one of five potential punters. The next day. Coach Ford told him to put on pads and the baseball player became a football player. Clemson shortstop Bill Spiers became Clemson punter Bill Spiers. Spiers had not punted since his high school days at Wade Hampton Academy in Orangeburg. He was the quarterback of his high school team and punted as a sideline. Both years he played football, his team was state champions, so he wasn't called on to punt very often. "In high school, nobody really concentrated on punting," Spiers said. "Somebody would run out there and kick the ball. There was nothing to it. was an outstanding quarterback, throwing for over 2,000 Spiers is a veteran.345 career hitter for the Tiger baseball team, but a rookie on the gridiron. 7

" " Clemson President MAX LENNON Max Lennon, former vice president for agricultural administration at Ohio State University, became President of Clemson University on October 14, The University board of trustees announced the unanimous decision at a board meeting at Clemson on that day. Dr. Lennon is a native of Columbus County, NC and earned his bachelor's degree in animal science from N. C. State in He also earned a doctorate in animal science from the same institution He had been at Ohio State for two years where he had also served as executive dean for agriculture, home economics and natural resources. Lennon was also on the Ohio State Faculty Senate and was co-chairman of the Governor s commission on agriculture. Previously, in he had served as dean of the College of Agriculture and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Missouri and as associate dean and director of research in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Texas Tech University. Lennon, who has also served as an assistant professor at Texas Tech and an associate and full professor at Texas Tech and Missouri, spent two years with the international agri-business firm Central Soya of Illinois. He also has participated in many national and international conferences concerning new technologies in agriculture. The 45-year-old Lennon was chosen from about 200 candidates for the presidency at Clemson. 'You have the unwavering support of the entire Board of Trustees to carry out your duties as President of this university, said Louis Batson, chairman of the board of trustees. "We will stick to our role as maker of policy and we want you to carry out our policies without any interference from us." Lennon commented on his philosophies and goals for Clemson in his opening press conference. "I am extremely delighted to be chosen as the leader of this great institution. We're at an extremely important time in our lives, not because of circumstances but because of where we are in history. We need landgrant institutions in a way that is almost unique... so we can continue to be competitive in a world market. "We at Clemson University must make our own priorities to lead us into the 21st century. We must begin by making ourselves visible in the state, then we must focus on the global perspective of the university and what we can accomplish in that arena. Batson declared that the long selection process had discovered a man who knows what he wants. "Max Lennon is a good planner, a deep thinker, and a man ready for the challenge. He is restless without being impatient." Lennon said the early part of his administration will consist of familiarizing himself more closely with Clemson's programs. "It would be presumptuous of me " to come in here with a set of priorities, he said. "In the academic community you build on the strengths of the institution, and my first business will be learning about those strengths. I ll be calling for help from the students, faculty, administrators, alumni and the rest of the Clemson family to make sure our priorities are in order. Lennon began his teaching career at N. C. State in 1966 when he served as a graduate assistant professor. In 1970 he moved to Lubbock, TX, where he served as an assistant professor of animal science at Texas Tech University. He remained at the Texas institution as an assistant dean and associate dean in the College of Agriculture until On the first day of this decade he became the chairperson in the department of animal husbandry at the University of Missouri. He served as Dean of the College of Agriculture at Missouri until 1983, when he moved to Ohio State as vice president for Agricultural Administration. Lennon is married to Ruth Carter Lennon and they have two children, Daniel (23) and Robin (21). Max Lennon is in his first full academic year as Clemson president. 9

" said " Athletic Director BOBBY ROBINSON A total sports program. That's the goal of the Clemson University Athletic Department, and under the leadership of Athletic Director Bobby Robinson, Clemson is headed solidly in that direction. The road to the athletic director s position has been a steady, successful progression through athletic and administrative opportunities for Robinson. He v^/as born in Columbia and attended A. C. Flora High School. During his high school career, he was a point guard for the basketball team and a third baseman in baseball. He also played golf competitively, and was a scratch golfer at one time. Robinson did not play any high school sports as a senior because of a heat stroke suffered in the summer of He graduated from A. C. Flora in 1964 and then enrolled in Furman University. Robinson graduated from Furman with a B.S. degree in business and political science in He was president of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter at Furman. After he was graduated from Furman, Robinson worked in his family's laundry and dry-cleaning business for two years. Robinson came to Clemson in 1970, not in athletics, but in the housing office. After three years, he moved across campus to serve as an administrative assistant in the athletic department. "I started at Clemson in the housing office, but I came to Clemson with the intention of working in athletics, Robinson. "No opening existed at the time, so I had to wait until there was one.' After serving the athletic department in various capacities, he became business manager in Two years later he was named assistant athletic director and in 1980 he became associate AD. He held that title four years, but his area of responsibility was primarily football and basketball. While serving his administrative duties, Robinson found time to coach the Clemson golf team between 1975 and During his time as the head coach, Clemson won its only ACC title in golf and three times the Tigers participated in the NCAA tournament. In 1983, his final season as the head coach, he guided Clemson to a number-five national finish. Clarence Rose was one of three All-Amencans to play for the Tigers during his tenure and is now has been a head coach, and he has handled the budgetary aspects needed to run a $12 million program. Bobby Robinson's philosophy of athletics is very simple. "We want to be the very best in competition, m academics, in facilities. We have made the commitment to provide our coaches and athletes the tools necessary to compete on the conference and national level. In competition, Robinson led the Tigers to one of their best years ever. Football and men's basketball were involved in post-season play and no less than 1 teams participated in NCAA post-season competition. Seven of these teams were ranked in the top 20 in the country. In the Knoxville Journal's All-Sports Poll Clemson ranked 1 8th in women's sports and 22nd in men's sports, Clemson s first top 25 rating in both areas in the same year. In academics, Clemson student-athletes had an outstanding year. Over 90 athletes had 3.0 or better grade point ratios either semester, with the football team having five players named to the Academic All-Conference Team, the most in the ACC. In the area of facilities, Robinson continues his philosophy. Recent renovations have included the Strength Training Center, one of the finest in the country; Tiger Field, home of the Clemson Tiger baseball team; and the West End Zone locker room complex in Memorial Stadium. New facilities now underway include a new activities room in Death Valley, an indoor tennis facility, and a new permanent soccer stadium on Riggs Field. In addition to all of this, a continuing maintenance program for all facilities and practice areas has been established. From a university perspective, Robinson envisions the athletic department as being one of 49 departments on campus, equal to English, accounting, admissions, and the others. "We believe the athletic department is a viable, important part of the mission of Clemson University," says Robinson, "as athletic competition provides a common bond for students, faculty, staff, and friends." Under Robinson the athletic department has continued support of the university. Band uniforms and travel, the educational enhancement fund, and the athletic-academic endowment fund (coordinated with the Athletic Council) are some of the areas that have been developed. Robinson has confidence in his staff, his coaches, his athletes, and the facilities at Clemson University. "We have a solid base to work from, but if we are not moving forward, we are losing ground. We will work within university guidelines and expand our horizons We want to be as good as we can be as a vital part of the university and the State of South Carolina. a successful member of the pro tour. Thus, it IS easy to see why Bobby Robinson is most qualified for the position of athletic director at Clemson University he has done it all He has been an administrator at all levels, he has worked in other areas in the University, he Bobby Robinson guided Clemson to a top 25 finish in both men's and women's sports last year. 11

Clemson University: THE SECOND CENTURY Clemson Looks to the Future Clemson University approaches its 100th birthday In 1989 with an aggressive plan to begin Its second century of service to the state, region and country. "Clemson University: The Second Century" names five major areas for emphasis. Its aim is to forge a partnership for economic progress among the university, the state and the private sector. It will be used as a road map to seek external support and focus the University's research and public service efforts. The five areas are: AGRICULTURE By applying the most sophisticated of tomorrow s technologies, Clemson will be able to help the agriculture Industry become more efficient and profitable. 18 coach I Danny Ford Clemson head coach Danny Ford is not an opera buff, he's not even close. And, it is likely that Wolfgang Mozart never saw a college football game. But. these two giants in their fields have something in common success at a very early stage of their careers. Mozart became famous for his ability to compose symphonies by the time he was five years old. Danny Ford was not coaching college football teams at age five, he was barely holding a football. But, a look at past national champions indicates that the current Clemson mentor is the youngest coach in the history of the college game to win the Associated Press National Championship. It puts him ahead of all the heavyweights of the game in the modern era (since 1938) of college football. Ford took Clemson to the national title in 1981 at the age of 33 and now is the winningest coach in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference on a percentage basis. Additionally, Ford is already seventh in total wins among ACC coaches. Not bad for someone who is still two years away from his 40th birthday. And, the success has come against top competition. Ford has already gained more wins over AP top 20 teams and top 10 teams than any other Clemson coach in history and is the only coach in ACC history (eight years experience) to have a winning record against top 20 teams (top 20 when playing against Clemson). Clemson fans are certainly happy Ford entered the profession because he has brought a solid program to among the finest in the nation. Now in his eighth full season at Clemson, his record of (.728) is the seventh best winning percentage in college football among active coaches. Between 1981 and 1984 Clemson had a ledger, the fourth best winning percentage in America. The class of 84 was the third winningest in ACC history in terms of winning percentage, and no ACC YOUTHFUL CHAMPIONS (Youngest Coaches to win the AP National Championship) Name/School Year Record Age Danny Ford. Clemson Bud Wilkinson, Oklahonna Paul Brown, Ohio State Paul Dietzel, Louisiana State Barry Switzer, Oklahoma Danny Ford is America's seventh winningest active coach. class in the 33-year history of the league ever won more games in a four-year period. Ford has been a part of three ACC championship teams and one National Championship team at Clemson. In 1978 he was offensive coordinator for the team that won the Gator Bowl over Ohio State, The Gadsden, AL native was more than )ust the offensive coordinator in that game however, as he had become the head coach of the Tigers on December 1 after Charley Pell had already left to go to Florida. The 30-year-old Ford made quite a celebrated beginning to his head coaching career with that victory over the Woody Hayes-coached Buckeyes. The nationally televised Clemson victory helped put the Tigers on the national football map and it began Clemson s climb to among the elite of college football. A review of Ford's football past should help us understand why he has been so successful as a head coach. Another in a long line of former Bear Bryant players that have gone on to greatness in coaching, Ford played for the Bear between 1967 and He was Kenny Stabler s sophomore tight end as a starter in 1967, played that position in 1968 and moved to offensive tackle in Ford started all three years, was all-conference in 1969 and played on three teams that went to bowl games. In 1969 he was also a member of the All-SEC academic team, and served as the captain of the Alabama team. After Pat Dye's coaxing. Ford remained at Alabama as a graduate assistant for the 1970 and 1971 seasons. He had already earned his B.S. degree in industrial arts and earned his master's degree in special education in Ford became a fulltime aide for Bryant in 1972 and The Tide went to four bowl games while Ford was an assistant coach. Clemson's current head man then accepted a position as an assistant coach under Jimmy Sharpe at Virginia Tech. He remained in Blacksburg for three seasons ( ) before coming to Clemson as offensive line coach in And, just 23 games later he was named head coach of the Tigers at the age of 30, the youngest active Division I in the country. Nearly 40 years after hiring 31 -year-old Alabama graduate Frank Howard, Clemson had hired 30-year-old Alabama graduate Danny Ford. Now 38 years old, Danny Ford is running out of mountains to climb. He has been associated with 19 college football teams as a player or coach through the years and 18 have had winning regular season records and 1 2 have gone to bowl games. Additionally, those clubs have had a combined record of , a.729 winning percentage. 15

He coached tight ends his first three years and two seasons he coached the AII-ACC tight end. He IS in his first season as a wide receiver coach. He recruits in North Carolina and Florida. McCorvey came to Clemson from Alabama A&M where he was defensive coordinator for four years. The 1972 Alabama State graduate lettered four years in football at the school before earning his physical education degree. He then received a master's degree in health, leisure, and sports from the University of West Florida in Larry Van Der Heyden has coached Clemson's offensive line for the past seven years. In addition, he recruits in South Carolina, North Carolina, and western Pennsylvania. Van Der Heyden joined the Tiger coaching staff in January 1979, coming from Memphis State where he was offensive coordinator for three years. He also served stints at Iowa State, Drake, Indiana State, East Carolina, and Virginia. He earned his B.A. and master's degree at Iowa State and lettered three years in football and baseball. He is a member of the All-time Iowa State football team. Tom Harper became Clemson's assistant head coach in February Having served as defensive coordinator at North Carolina and Iowa State, his most recent stint in that same position was at Virginia Tech. He was also Wake Forest's head coach in Harper graduated from the University of Kentucky with his bachelor's degree in and received his master's degree from there in He is responsible for recruiting in South Carolina and New York. Six of the Clemson players he has coached have played pro football, including three who were NFL starters last year (William Perry, Dan Benish, and Jeff Bryant). Chuck Reedy has coached Clemson's running backs for the last eight years. He also has a heavy recruiting schedule covering South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and the New York- Long Island areas. The St. Augustine, FL, native earned two letters in football from Appalachian State where he was a 1971 graduate in health and physical education. He came to Clemson from Kentucky on July 5, Reedy is the main reason Clemson has signed the top player in Jacksonville five years in a row. He has coached three backs who have gone on to the NFL, including Kevin Mack, last year's AFC offensive rookie-of-the-year. Tommy West is in his fifth season coaching the Clemson defensive and bandit ends. He recruits for the Tigers in Florida and Georgia. Prior to coming to Clemson, West coached at Appalachian State until July, The Gainesville, GA, native earned his B.S. degree in health education from the University of Tennessee in 1975 after lettering three years in football and baseball. A fine all-around athlete. West was drafted out of high school by baseball's Chicago Cubs. Bill Oliver is in his first season at Clemson as the defensive secondary coach. He will also recruit for the Tigers in Florida, Alabama, and Georgia. A native of Livingston, AL, he began his collegiate coaching career as defensive secondary coach at Auburn, and five years later was hired by the late Paul "Bear " to fill the same position at Alabama. His most recent stint, however, was with the Memphis Showboats of the United States Football League where he served as senior defensive coordinator and secondary coach. Oliver was a member of the 1961 undefeated National Championship Alabama team and he received his bachelor's degree in
