2 EMBLEM SIGNIFICANCE MOTTO NICKNAME CALL SIGN OPERATIONS The 312th FS Squadron aircraft were marked with the 302nd Wing tail stripes and the 27th ATG white circle. Additionally, the 312th had its own squadron insignia, which featured a caricature of a pilot, dressed in black, riding a yellow "Gooney Bird," superimposed on a white disc with a red border. This insignia was carried on the nose of their C-47s. The 312th also used an aircraft code, with "P" as the first letter, and the individual aircraft having its own letter as the second letter. Photographs have surfaced of "PX," "PW," and "PZ." This code appears behind the cockpit and under the nose, and is in yellow with black shadowing. These aircraft also had the last three numbers of the serial number, painted in white, between the circle and the aircraft code under the nose. To top it off, the front half of the cowlings were painted black, with the back half painted yellow.gooney Birds & Ferry Tales The rear portion of aircraft "PW" of the 312th FS. Note the last three numbers of the serial number have been over painted in white. Also visible are the yellow-black-yellow stripes and the 27th ATG white circle. C-47 "PZ," #250, of the 312th FS, can be seen over the heads of the men of the 312th. Note the name "BABS, " appears on the rear portion of the Gooney Bird in the squadron insignia. C-47 "PW," #474, of the 312th FS. The squadron insignia, yellow with black shad owed lettering, aircraft number in white, and black and yellow cowling bands can all be seen in this photograph. Note on the squadron insignia, on the rear portion of the Gooney Bird, the name "STELLA " is written. 312th, C-47 "PX." The squadron insignia, code letters, white circle, and cowling bands are all visible in this photograph. The aircraft number is not painted on the nose of this bird, as it was on "PZ" (#250) and "PW" (#474). Dillard Hyden, of the 311th Squadron, was assigned to this plane when he became a flight engineer. Radio call letters were "Precious X-Ray."
