4 Project Description Chaos or Community is a collaborative theater project integrating historical knowledge of racial injustice explored in English class alongside producing visuals in our engineering course. The events of the summer of 2016 inpired this project. Most of the text in the play is taken directly from interviews conducted by students in class with community members, news stories, dispatch call recordings and court recordings. Students also wrote scenes from important historical moments. Purpose We hope that Chaos or Community, the play can inspire positive dialouge, open minds, and the desire to listen and hear all people s stories. We also hope to remind members of communities not to ignore the existence of racial discrimination and to spark discussions of what we can do as individuals to change the systems and institutions that allow racial injustice to exist within our communities. Essential Questions What helps people listen to one another? What happens when we listen well? What happens when we don t? How do members of a community create healing after conflict? How can we be agents of postive change? How can we as individuals help end racism?

5 History in the Classroom We followed current events, read news articles and Op-Ed pieces from all perspectives of this topic. We also read Dr. King s final publication: Chaos or Community, which was our inspiration for our play. We also read about the history about the Civil Rights Movement, drawing parallels to the Black Lives Matter Movement. Students also read books in literature circles. Literature Circle Books Coding in Engineering In Engineering we created interactive visuals that would specifically appear in a scene. The visuals are created by all the students divided in small groups. The codes had to provoke emotion towards people, but the most essential part was using the XBOX Kinect. The Kinect would create a debt field and capture the closest object to then create an average point that would control the object. Look forward to appearing in the play!

6 Getting Constructing this play was not something we could do in 1 week. As a class we worked together to make this play the best it could be. We put in lots of time inside and outside of school and made lots of critical decisions to bring to you this play. Below you could see some of the many things we did to create change in our community. Mariela & Ana having a thoughtful discussion about costumes on the play. Ms. Angie works with students to edit the scripts.

7 Ready... Mikyel working a verbatim transcription for the play. Students working on the transcriptions from their interviews. Directors making final touches to our script. Students rehearsing for our final play.
