1 Peal Secretary s Report for 2003 The Association rang a total of 121 peals in 2003, a fall of 21 compared with the total of 142 in the Jubilee Year, There was only a single peal in hand. The number of ringers taking part in peals was correspondingly lower at 190 compared with 220 in 2002, although more in keeping with other years. Thomas Barlow once more rang the most peals for the Association (55) followed by John Keeler with 44 and Simon Davies with 41. John Keeler achieved his 22 nd year as leading conductor by calling 42 peals followed by the usual threesome of Richard Edwards (15), Stephen Wheeler (12) and Stanley Jenner (11). There were three new conductors in 2003 two of them members of the Marshall family. Christine Marshall achieved the notable feat of conducting the first peal she rang, and in 50 Spliced Doubles methods (no variations!). Congratulations to her! 15 members rang 20 or more peals, 30 rang 6-19 peals, while 86 rang in only one peal. 8 members rang their first peal in 2003 including three together at their first attempt in a peal at Biggin Hill. Dickon Love is to be congratulated on ringing his 1000 th peal and his 500 th for the Association. A brief list of some other significant personal ringing milestones achieved by members during the year is included as part of this report. The leading tower for peals was All Saints Maidstone (20 including the 400 th on the bells) followed by St Michael s Maidstone (14 including the 200 th peal in the tower) and East Farleigh (9). The Association rang the first peals on the new bells at Horton Kirby and on the augmented bells at Brabourne. In addition, although not rung for the Association, congratulations should be extended on the ringing of the first peal on the augmented ring of twelve at Benenden. Indeed, congratulations to all involved in these three exciting projects and in the peals. The Association rang six peals to the memory of Thomas Cullingworth, and there were many more rung by other friends and admirers of his. Tom was one of this county s most famous ringers (although a native of Yorkshire), a former Peal Secretary and Vice-President and almost certainly the Association s leading peal ringer at the time of his death in May at the age of 90 years. He will be sorely missed by all ringers in the county and many of us are proud to have called him a friend. May he Rest In Peace. In addition to peals rung for the Association, there were a further 48 peals in the county. Other than six peals rung Non-Association, the Oxford Diocesan Guild rang 12 and the Cumberland Youths 10. The remainder were shared between nine other societies. In total there were 163 peals in 75 towers in Kent in In 2003 the Association rang the first peals of Doubledigit Alliance, Tresta Alliance and Barming Heath Delight Royal. Methods not previously rung for the Association were Callington Surprise Major, Anglia Alliance and Glasgow Little Surprise Royal.
