5 To the Reader This book is about Man s natural longing to find the way to the Fountain of Creativity and his desire to become his own true self. I undertake this journey together with the reader. I endeavor to show how this desire takes form in our everyday life and our human relationships, and how an active contact with this Fountain of Creativity invigorates and changes Man and his life in the course of time. In this I follow the ideas of the Austrian psychiatrist Jacob Levy Moreno ( ) and his views on Man s action and creativity, and those of the Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung and his foundations of analytical psychology. With their help I strive for a larger understanding of Man s psyche and the powers of creativity, knowing that all theories and concepts are but compassionate attempts at understanding the greater mystery of life. Personal experiences and changes in life have left me pondering time and again, for what reason something is happening in my life just now, what purpose it serves. Such pondering also relates to my work as psychologist and psychotherapist as I contemplate such questions regarding the circumstances of my clients lives. As a trainer for group leadership, action and psychodrama methods I encounter such questions in the lives of my students and last not least in psychodrama itself. What purpose does an event on stage serve, what is the practical use of psychodrama in that moment, and how aware am I of the ongoing process? My book is borne out of these questions and reflections, and I strive to share the answers I found. In Finland J. L Moreno s psychodrama and analytical psychology are generally seen from the vantage point of psychotherapy. Yet action methods based on the theory and practice of psychodrama are widely used in rehabilitation, pastoral care, consultation and supervision as well as in professional education and performing arts. They are also used by volunteers in mental health work. My aim therefore is to present Moreno s and Jung s concepts in a way that the tools supplied by them will be useful in the above contexts. Towards this goal I will be sharing experiences from my own work in the fields of rehabilitation, supervision, occupational healthcare and education. Such examples are a condensation of experiences with different groups in different settings, naturally anonymized to protect privacy. Examples depicting individual action are also generally a condensation based on a number of similar individual events. This will hopefully make it easier for readers less acquainted with psychodrama to gain an understanding of the ideas behind action methods and the processes in psychodrama. In addition I am using fairytales and myths as travelogues as well as introduction to theoretical concepts. The reader will be able to use all these as a mirror for his own experiences and events of life so as to get access to his own Fountain of Creativity. 5

6 The book s first chapter introduces the reader to my vision of MoreJung, namely that Man as Cosmic Man can share in and relate to the entirety of his original self and the greater whole of creation. I strive to show how to this day man in his limitations has been seeking answers as to his individuality and true being, and how this is mirrored in the ways and means of psychology. Chapter two through four form an entity based on the stages of life-long individuation. As such it follows the model of analytical psychology on man s development in life towards a whole human being consciously accepting his strengths and weaknesses. To me these stages of individuation are an expression of creativity, the Journey to the Fountain of Creativity. Chapter five focuses on psychodrama itself. It shows how the studies of analytical psychology have influenced my perception of psychodrama and its ways. In this I am aided by two gods well known from Greek mythology: Dionysus, the god of winemaking and wine, fertility, theatre and religious ecstasy, and Hermes, the patron of travelers, messenger of the gods and intercessor between the mortal and divine. Together they form a whole providing strength in my role as psychodrama director, but they also lend spiritual support in my work as psychologist and psychotherapist. In addition chapter five deals with central issues of psychodrama methods, namely role reversal and the place of action, the psychodramatic stage, as seen from the vantage point of analytical psychology. In the face of the wide specter of Moreno s and Jung s theories and methods and their life work, I am humbly aware that this book can only offer a glimpse of the vast scope of their thoughts. Yet I hope that even such glimpse will rouse the reader to embark on the journey to his own creativity and to explore the fascinating worlds of psychodrama and analytical psychology. This book is in a way the sum of my personal and professional experiences with Moreno and Jung, a journey that began in the 1980s and has not ended yet. In my author s chapel
