1 JAKKALS JAG BAKKIE RADIOS I thought to mention here what I use in my bakkie, in case some people want good radios etc, here you can read and see first hand the kind of reception I get, I want a convoy radio, farm radio and general talk radio on farms etc.. So, I legally licence my radios with Icasa, pay about R50, 00 a year and have a VHS system legally owned, - just what I need and 100% safe. I am happy to pay ICASA a fee to allow me to legally own my radio with channels I want, but am totally against some crap of having to first belong to one club and then this allows me to become a member of an association that allows me to apply for a licence to own a radio, no ways, I use this way of applying and I have a radio channel/s and am very happy to just support Icasa with no middle man at all Radio fitted next to gearlever out of the driver s way I had the radio installed by professionals, and it pays when you see the results achieved.

Most unrealistic, so this article will help you and give you a good idea as to true facts as I am not selling radios, just helping you get a good set that will work. Be careful what you decide to buy or get what I suggest and you will know it s a good choice first off. And buy from proper agents! 3 Speaking from this spot to that rear tree area is 6, 3 kilometres away, with two Motorola CP040 s we can talk and its crystal clear, you can also get roof aerials if needed. We used a set of these radios for general work on farms and they are very nice for general use, from the front of the farmhouse to the arrow at the back, is a set of trees, just behind the trees is a place the auction takes place for sheep etc, it is 6,3 kilometres away, and if I have a person standing at that auction, I can speak to him as clear as day as if he is standing next to me, it is that clear, with two hand held MOTOROLA CP040 s. This is a genuine report back as to range; with no major obstacles in the way and open country these radios can really gooi. This is a real genuine bit of feedback, and I have no reason to not tell the truth anyway, the Motorola CP040 is a good radio no doubt about it. MY PERSONAL BAKKIE SET / HUNTING SET UP I use this brand of radios, it is without a doubt one of the best makes of two way radio communication available today, and they are not badly priced and they can really gooi! The Kirisun brand of radio is the most popular brand in South Africa without a doubt. I use a Kirisun model PT8100 in my bakkie and two handhelds the PT3600 s are my hand held models. Price is about R1700 for the bakkie radio and R a piece for the hand held models, extra antenna is R I then have a roof mounted extra antenna for the portables if needed for better range, but I hardly have to use it, I use the radio as is just not inside the bakkie, hold it outside the window. Here at the end of the article are the general ranges I can achieve with my set up. Remember obstacles play a vital part of estimating range, if using two hand helds keep them outside the bakkie window or get roof aerials for them, but the best is always a base radio mounted in a bakkie and then handhelds for others that don t have radios, or better two bakkie mounted radios, however portables are always handy for all kinds of things.

4 Like camping - you can leave a hand set at the camp if you are driving on a farm etc and they can get hold of you at any time, portables have a place, and when no cell phone reception radios are tops!!. Here is the portable I use PT3600 Kirisun.

DONT buy radios overseas and bring into SA, it is illegal, all radios must have Icasa stickers. These radios are fantastic, reception over long range is great, simply stunning, the days of having to phone on cellphones from the farms are over, and not having to recharge or getting monthly bills is super cool!

6 Here is the portable radios magnetic antenna for the roof to give the portable even better range, this just screws in the antenna socket on the portable, quick and easy.

7 REMEMBER THIS!!!!! DON T go to a chommie and have him install your VHS radio sommer in his back yard to save money, it won t work.. Because.. when you have a two way VHS radio installed the technician has to tune your aerial in to correspond with the frequency of your channel/s and he on a metre slowly cuts down the aerial till the signal is at its best on your frequency, don t just have it installed in a chommies back yard, your reception wont be that good!!! Hope this article helps, it will help you decide on a good set of bakkie radios and I prefer a mounted bakkie radio and a hand held, so it can be given to a person to use in bush or in his bakkie and if he needs more range he simply puts the other extra aerial on the roof! Rather get a professional to fit that radio, don t go to some backyard mechanic!

8 GENERAL For the normal hunter who wants privacy, get a good deal on a set of these radios, apply to Icasa for a licence, the supplier and fitter of your radios can do that (well most of them) and wait for the licence, pay about R50 a radio, and get a frequency designated to you, or get more channels as you wish. I wanted a GOOD radio system, one that allows me to have a top class radio system in the truck and legal, one that gives me super range and even in built up areas it still achieves great reception, open areas well that s a no brainer its top class, I wanted a unit that s also portable so I can stay in contact with another bakkie or car if we work two bakkies and using two radios all with extra antennas is great, but generally if you want to talk 5 kilometres even in built up areas the system bakkie to portable is great and you don t need an extra antenna. Remember power lines, bad weather all affect the range. Here below is a GENUINE and test conducted by me in Cape Town after I had the radios fitted, it is 100% accurate and not glorified at all. I can honestly say if you want good farm radios and quality buy this set up and you will not be sorry. READ THE FULL REPORT BELOW

PT8100 to the portable WITHOUT any extra roof aerial; 6, 7 kilos between buildings down the top of Blaauwberg Road near De Goede circle, down to the sea, along beach and up hill behind the flats. Not exactly line of sight.. 6, 7 kilos (EXACTLY). I never drove more; we turned around as we wanted to test it in a more built up area (See here). PT8100 to the portable WITH roof antenna, corner Jansen s road, down Blaauwberg road, past Caltex refinery, past Makro, along N7 over bridge over railways line over N1 into Goodwood all the way NOT line of sight at all, to Peninsula motors (12 kilometres) exactly and could speak clearly. We turned at this point. (Was overcast and rainy) Portable PT3600 without aerial on roof of car, only the aerial fitted on the radio, my family stood with radio in the kitchen with window open antenna outside, corner Janssen s road, I drove into Blaauwberg road, right past Caltex refinery, past Makro, to the Milnerton Medi clinic turn right, down to beach, (NOT LINE OF SIGHT AT ALL). Never at any stage did we lose a signal and never could we not hear the other person in a house at corner Janssen s road, the range to Medi clinic was about 7,2 kilometres, down to the robot, right at the Marine road intersection and past the vlei, alongside the sea, back to the house, the total distance was 14,7 kilometres, not once the entire trip was the signal bad, it was badly overcast ( ) and normally obstacles will play havoc with signals, but at no time on this trip did we have any problems. We never had any line of sight at all. PT8100 bakkie radio to portable PT3600 line of sight with roof antenna, 23 kilos over farm lands, I turned at this point, I still want to push the radios to the maximum line of sight with and without roof antennas on the portable. This I will get to do on my next attempt. GENERAL Clarity was awesome, and volume very good, for general work and convoy use these radios really rock, awesome stuff, and anyways, in a convoy how often will you talk more than 12 kilos away from each other in a built up place between buildings, mostly you will use it on the open road and imagine the range you can achieve then! These tests above got done in overcast conditions and at times it was raining.

But also weather, power lines, structures can affect frequency potential a lot and play havoc with your signal strength, like a cell phone next to portable or normal radio on in the car etc. Lastly I used two Motorola portables CP040 and with no extra aerials, line of sight we got easily 6, 3 kilometres over a farm in Free State, as said this was line of sight, flat ground to a cattle auction in the distance. Buy good radios, licence them and enjoy VHS crystal clear reception. Have professionals fit the radios, cut the aerials to the correct length to match the frequency and enjoy excellent reception, don t just take it to some backyard mechanic and install it net so, you will not get the same reception from your lovely equipment at all. I had mine installed by the same company I purchased my radios from in Cape Town, if you want details call me. As you can see, without line of sight and between buildings, houses, railway lines, Caltex refinery and other major obstacles this radio performs 100% one can only imagine on the open road and with another aerial if really needed how far you could talk, but generally an extra roof antenna isn t really needed at all for the portable radio.
