2 The 2018 Rocklyn Merino Stud ram sale auction will be conducted by Elders MAKES MORE POSSIBLE Different experts working as a team to support your farming business. MIKE MARCHANT BRANCH/ MERCHANDISE MANAGER AARON SEAMAN LIVESTOCK MANAGER JASEN BENNETT MERCHANDISE SALES NICK MCNAMARA WOOL ROWAN DALEY REAL ESTATE BOOROWA STREET, YOUNG NSW Rocklyn Merino Stud is proud to be affiliated with the NSW Stud Merino Breeders Association, MerinoLink Ltd and Sheep Genetics MERINOSELECT. Disclaimer All reasonable care has been taken to ensure the information provided in this catalogue is correct at the time of printing however, neither Rocklyn Pty Ltd nor Elders accept any responsibility for the accuracy, interpretation or repeatability of the information included.
3 WELCOME to the 2018 Rocklyn ram sale While seasonal conditions across the state are poor, wool and lamb markets are on all-time highs. We hope our clients have not been too severely impacted by the drought to capitalise on the current market situation. This year, Rocklyn Merino Stud turns 80! I haven t been around for quite that long but things have certainly changed in that time. Our Stud has moved from producing sheep with more development and a stronger micron to developing plainer bodied, dual purpose sheep with finemedium wool, that have high fertility and good early growth rates. Having done this through careful selections over a long period of time means that we have not compromised our heavy wool cutters in the process. Classing concentrates on long stapled, bright, soft handling wool that is well nourished with good crimp definition. In 2018 we are embracing the exciting and progressive step of DNA sampling and genomic testing and we look forward to how this will fast-track our genetic progress. Australian Sheep Breeding Values () and selection indexes have again been included in the sale catalogue to assist buyers with their selections. I would like to welcome returning clients and new buyers to the 2018 Rocklyn Merino Stud ram sale. Please join us for lunch and refreshments at the sale. Ralph Diprose Health status Rocklyn is a brucellosis accredited free flock, has been Gudair vaccinated since 2002 and has owner declared footrot free status. Selling system Normal auction conditions with a buyer number system will apply. Please register with Elders on the day of the sale, before the sale begins. Rebate A 2% rebate applies to outside agents settling within 7 days of the sale. Delivery Please make arrangements for delivery/ pick up of rams on the sale day. 3

6 Explanation of terms When selecting rams, it is important to take these factors into consideration and combine this information with a visual assessment of the rams. Further data is available upon request. Measured performance data Australian sheep breeding values () Selection indexes A selection index combines for several traits to give a single value. This reflects the performance of the sheep relative to the breeding objective of the particular index. 6 Sire MP+ DP+ Sire of the ram - see sire summary on page 5 for further information FD Fibre diameter - the mean fibre diameter in microns of all fibres measured (6 August 2018) SD Standard deviation of the fibre diameter (6 August 2018) CV Coefficient of variation of the fibre diameter (6 August 2018) CF Comfort factor - percentage of fibres under 30 micron (6 August 2018) BWT Body weight in kilograms (6 August 2018) YCFW YFD YFDCV YSL YWT YFAT YEMD Yearling clean fleece weight (kg) - rams with higher YCFW produce progeny that will cut more wool. Yearling fibre diameter (μm) - rams with more negative YFD produce progeny which are finer. Yearling fibre diameter coefficient of variation (%) - rams with lower YFDCV will produce progeny with lower variation in fibre diameter. Yearling staple length (mm) - rams with more positive YSL will produce progeny with longer staple length. Yearling weight (kg) - rams with more positive YWT produce progeny that grow quicker and are heavier at a certain age. Yearling fat depth (mm) - rams with more positive YFAT will produce progeny that have more subcutaneous fat, which improves reproduction rate and meat quality. Yearling eye muscle depth (mm) - rams with more positive YEMD will produce progeny that have more muscle, independent of weight, and a higher lean meat yield. Merino Production Plus Index - ranks animals on their ability to produce progeny for a fine wool operation that has significant surplus sheep sales. The index is aimed at producers whose sheep income is a balance of both wool and surplus sheep sales. It is for selfreplacing merino flocks who do not keep their wethers to produce wool. Dual Purpose Plus Index - ranks animals on their ability to produce merinos for dual purpose operations. The index is aimed at producers whose majority of sheep income comes from sheep sales. It is for self-replacing merino flocks that do not keep their wethers and also join a portion of their ewes to terminal sires for lamb production.
