We used to wake up and go to school on the radio's voice everywhere. There were certain programmes we listened to regularly. One of those programmes we loved most at our childhood and in our youth was a programme presented by respectable lady Inas Gohar. The radio is one of the things I always feel attached to, respect and love. The idea that you use your ears generates a feeling completely different from that feeling generated when you look at something. The screen portrays people, and thus it limits imagination. On the contrary, the radio helps you imagine the persons who are talking. You wonder where they sit and how they look. The radio is the basic means of mass communication. Another thing is that I love it for the memories I have. I'm pleased with the developments that have lately taken place, and wish radio restores its place in our life. I hope this development continues and wish the radio all success". 1

He says: "I'm not young anymore, but I remember when I was young I used to listen to the Middle East Radio station on my way to school. I used to wake up to the sound of the radio at home, broadcasting different programmes, including "Fantastic', Child programmes, as well as religious programmes. I still remember listening to many good programmes for a long time. Wed used to listen to a radio drama broadcast after sunset in the fasting month of Ramadan. Thos habits were observed for a long time. This means that the radio was very important at our home." 2

When I listen to a radio drama, such as Patience in el- Malahat starring late actress FatenHamama, I imagine all the locations. It is like when you read a novel you imagine the places and the events. I have a conditional relationship with the Radio. It has something to do with nostalgia. I used to listen to the Radio at times which I cannot forget. This happened during the high school final exams. I have a lot of memories with the radio. When I was young, I used to wake up in the morning to find my father listening to the Middle East Radio Station. On Fridays used to listen to the radio. Emotional relationship was established between us and the Middle East Radio during the month of Ramadan. As we were brought up on listening to thosevoices, it is very difficult to forget them. When we listen to them we smile and shrug. We wish that those days come back. 4

Children wonder where those voices come from! and wonder what that tale leads to! To me the radio was like Arabian Nights. It was fueling the imagination of a young boy who listens to the radio. He wonders where that man s voice comes from. He doesn t know where to find him. We were really brought up on listening to the radio, and we used to sit down together around it. The radio was very important to me during the war of I was a big boy at that time. I was 14 years old. So, we used to listen to the news on the radio to know what our soldiers have done. The Youth and Sport Radio is my favorite Radio. I started to talk to the people through it. I started to comment on football matches through this radio. This was one of my dreams. This comment made my famous, and my voice became familiar to listeners. This step was very effective in my life. When I talk to someone, he recognizes my voice even before I introduce myself. Certainly this success goes to the Youth and Sport Radio, my favorite Radio station. It is also the favorite radio for all sportsmen. 5

We were introduced to the works of literature through the radio. We listened to the Arabic language on the radio. We listened to the best melodies on the Radio. We listened to the best songs on the radio. Our life was shaped by the radio. In the past, my radio was on for 24 hours a day. I used to listen to it even when I was asleep. I m talking about the radio programmes in the past. They were teaching English, French and Arabic. One could listen to the European Service, and to the plays of Shakespeare and others. You could imagine people acting those plays. This was very useful in building up ideas and culture. 6

I did not imagine that, someday, my voice would be aired on the radio. I was surprised when I was summoned for a voice test. I was excited to think that I would act before the microphone just like great artists. Nevertheless, I went to the Radio building and passed the exam. Mr. Mohammed Mahmud Shaaban (nicknamed Papa Sharo) congratulated me and said I would be starring the new Operetta named "The Spring Virgin" which is sometimes broadcast on the radio at the present day. I owe a lot to the radio. I became famous thanks to the radio drama series named "Samara". During the tripartite aggression against Egypt, the Egyptian soldiers used to listen to me on the radio, while I was reading the messages sent to them every day. The radio played a very important role in my life. I had also played several roles on radio drama." 9
