2 Company business has continued to expand and now includes: Engineering consulting on VHF, UHF mobile and SCADA systems Fibre Optic cable design, layout and termination Engineering consulting on light and heavy route microwave radio systems Engineering consulting on duplexers, multicouplers and other antenna filters. These devices allow use of a single antenna by several radio systems. Radio path design, signal level expectation. Path design uses the Pathloss 4.0 and Pathloss 5.0 computer programs Preparation and submission of Radio Licence applications to Industry Canada for land mobile and microwave radio Microwave frequency coordination with other users Acceptance testing of microwave radio antennas and wave-guide. Return loss sweeping and adjustment of tunable wave-guide connectors. Alignment of microwave antennas; peaked for maximum signal between radio sites. Acceptance testing of Cellular, PCS and SMR radio antennas. Return loss sweeping of cable and antennas. Tuning and alignment of most types of duplexers, multicouplers and other RF filter devices RF patch cords, jumper cables and antenna and duplexer phasing harnesses manufactured to customer specification Principal Products and Services Consulting Service Early in 1997, several customers approached the company for assistance with SCADA data collection radio systems. BH Electronics Ltd. has been designing, licencing and installing radio systems for communication in gas and oil gathering operations and pipeline systems since that time. Computer systems, commonly referred to as SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), monitor and control pipelines, gas gathering systems or well sites on a continuous basis. Expertise in radio path propagation, antenna selection, tower construction and project management have now become a significant part of the business. This includes VHF and UHF multipoint data collection systems, light and heavy route microwave radio systems (up to and including OC-3 capacity). It also includes spread spectrum radio systems, including the commonly used spread spectrum bands, 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz. Fibre Optic cable layout and design are now part of the expertise. This includes selection of connectors and termination panels. 2
3 In Canada, the following radio systems have been designed, licenced, installed and turned over to the customer. Spread Spectrum Radio Systems 10 Mbps Ethernet radio system connecting 3 offices for Midfield Supply in Brooks. 10 Mbps Ethernet radio system connecting the Recreation Centre Office to the Fire hall LAN network for the City of Airdrie. 10 Mbps Ethernet radio system connecting the main campus of Mount Royal College with a classroom building located 1.5 km north east of the College. 10 Mbps Ethernet radio system connecting the Forzani Group main office to a satellite office south of the main building. 10 Mbps radio system connecting approximately 25 schools together for Foothills School Division. Microwave Radio Systems Design, installation, system turn up and Project management of a microwave system for monitor and control of a 100 km pipeline for Talisman Energy, Inc. The pipeline is controlled remotely from Edson, Alberta. The microwave system required construction and installation of 8 new remote radio sites and used 900 MHz licenced microwave radio. Design, installation, system turn up and Project management of the upgrade of a microwave system for monitor and control of a 200 km pipeline for Talisman Energy, Inc. The pipeline is controlled remotely from Edson, Alberta. The microwave system required upgrading 5 radio sites and used 900 MHz licenced microwave radio. Design of a microwave system to upgrade capacity from Watson Lake to Dease Lake in Northern BC and the Yukon Territory. The microwave system used the upper 6 GHz microwave band and included several mountaintop radio sites and 2 passive repeaters. The main system backbone capacity was OC-3 (155 Mbps). Spur links operated at 16 DS1 (24 Mbps). Licencing of 3 heavy route microwave systems for NorthwesTel in the Yukon and Northwest Territory, all in the lower 6 GHz licenced microwave frequency band. Design and specification of radio and antenna equipment for an OC-3, licenced, 8 GHz microwave radio system for Thunder Bay Telephone. The microwave system provided backhaul facilities for cellular telephone traffic between Thunder Bay and Kenora, Ontario. Microwave Radio Antenna Testing and Acceptance Part of the acceptance procedures required during turn up of a microwave radio system is return loss sweeping of each antenna and wave guide. The company 3
4 purchased test equipment that measures antenna return loss and allows fine tuning adjustment of wave-guide connectors for microwave antennas. When tuning and adjustments are complete, return loss results can be printed for a permanent record that forms part of the acceptance record. The company has also purchased test equipment that allows alignment of microwave antennas between radio sites. Antennas are peaked from maximum receive signal from a distant microwave transmitter. Fibre Optic cable Design and Specification Design of a fibre optic ring network for a Gas Plant near Dawson Creek, BC. The fibre network connected gas processing equipment to a control room on the plant site. The network included 23 connection points for equipment monitor and control throughout the plant area. Design of a fibre optic cable system for a Gas Plant near Fort Nelson, BC. The fibre network consisted of a mixture of single and multimode fibre. The control room was located at a plant next door requiring use of single mode fibre. Design of a fibre optic cable system for a Gas and Oil Plant near Rocky Mountain House Alberta. Client requested all single mode fibre be used at this site. Cellular and PCS Radio Antenna Testing and Acceptance Part of the acceptance procedures required during turn up of a Cellular, PCS or SMR radio system is return loss sweeping of each antenna and feed line. The company purchased test equipment that measures and records return loss of antennas and coaxial feed line up to 3,300 MHz. SCADA Point to Multipoint Radio Systems Monitoring and control of a pipeline and gas gathering system south of Edson Alberta. Talisman Energy constructed a pipeline connecting a de hydration facility to the Edson Gas Plant. The pipeline had a total of 22 emergency shutdown block valves. At the south end of the pipeline, approximately 26 wells fed into a gas gathering system that fed the dehydrator. BH Electronics Ltd., under contract to Colt Engineering, designed, licenced, constructed and commissioned a 900 MHz licenced backbone radio system and 400 MHz licenced SCADA system for communication to all these control points. The microwave system required site selection and construction of 8 new radio towers and associated radio equipment. 4
5 A water pipeline monitoring and control system for the City of Regina. The system included 3 master stations and 22 outstations scattered around the city. An oil pipeline monitoring system near Moosomin Saskatchewan. This system included 1 master station, 1 data repeater station and 17 outstations. A pipeline monitoring system near Slave Lake, Alberta. The system included 1 master station and 11 outstations. An additional outstation was connected using a single radio repeater that replaced the expensive monthly charge of a dedicated satellite link between the ends of the pipeline. Several gas gathering systems near Lac La Biche, Alberta. These systems included 1 master station and 10 to 12 outstations. Duplexers, Multicouplers and RF Filters Another aspect of radio system design is the application of duplexers, filters and multicouplers to a multi user radio site. Filters offer 2 benefits to any radio site. They reduce potential intermodulation products that may disrupt communications They allow fewer antennas to serve several customers, reducing antenna loading on a radio tower. Proper design of filters, duplexers multicouplers reduces antenna quantity on a tower and resulting tower loading. Multicouplers also prevent interference between radio systems. Many radio sites suffer from significant intermodulation products that degrade service significantly. MSAT Magnetic Antenna Mount The MSAT mobile satellite telephone system provides equivalent to cellular telephone service throughout most of Canada. Many remote areas across Canada do not have cellular telephone service available. Users of this Mobile Telephone System often use rental or leased vehicles and do not want antennas permanently mounted to vehicles. BH Electronics supplies a magnetic mount for MSAT antennas so that they can be removed from a vehicle at any time. More than 3,000 of these antenna mounts have been supplied and demand continues to grow as users now look for this type of antenna mount when using an MSAT mobile telephone. Future 5

Radio path design, licencing, antenna and tower selection, installation and antenna and waveguide testing will continue to be the core business.
