Non-isolated Transmitter Even though these oints are connected to earth ground, they may have slightly different relative voltage levels. This allows current to flow between the grounds by way of the rocess loo causing erratic readings, drifting, or errors when a certain device is added to the system. The solution lies in the use of signal isolators. These devices break the galvanic ath (DC continuity) between grounds while allowing the analog signal to continue throughout the loo. An isolator also can eliminate the electrical noise of AC continuity (common mode voltage). The best signal isolators rovide three-way isolation (inut, outut, and ower) to eliminate any ossibility of a ground loo. Inuts and oututs can either sink current or source current. A 2-wire transmitter is a assive device and thus sinks current. A 4-wire transmitter oerates on an external ower source and thus sources or rovides ower to the circuit. Only one device can ower a 4-20 ma current loo. Note that sinking-sourcing and sourcing-sinking airing is always used, and never sourcing-sourcing or sinking-sinking. Single-Ended Inuts Tyically used with two-wire transmitters, one wire is connected to a ower source and each signal wire is connected to a PLC inut channel. Ground variations can create reading errors that generally increase as distance between earth grounds increase and also from nearby electrical interference. Differential Inuts Two signal wires run from each signal source to the PLC inut. Each inut signal is measured in reference to its own ground, eliminating ground differential errors. Noise immunity is imroved since the air of wires ick u interference equally. EXTSUP (External Suly) Otion The API EXTSUP otion rovides a sinking or unowered current outut. The API 3200 G controls the osition of the valve by comaring the 4-20 ma inut to that of the valve's osition feedback otentiometer or slidewire. An SPDT relay rovides bidirectional signals to drive the valve motor oen or close. When the valve osition, as indicated by the feedback signal, becomes equal to the osition as reresented by the control inut, the relay will go to the neutral osition and the valve motor will halt. The deadband control allows recise ositioning of the motor to eliminate hunting or oscillation. An auto/manual switch, oen/close buttons and an inut LooTracker LED allow easy setu and diagnostics.
