3 1 DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT 1.1 INTRODUCTION This manual provides general and detailed information on the installation and operation of the F272xB Audio Fiber optic Modem. Section 1 provides a general description of the equipment. Section 2 provides installation instructions. Section 3 provides operating instructions. Section 4 provides the theory of operation. Section 5 provides maintenance and troubleshooting information. Figure 1 provides a front panel view of the F272xB Modems. Figure 2 provides a rear view of the modem. F2725B 4-wire Analog Telephone 1 or Audio 2, single mode, 1310nm, LC optics, distances to 20km. 1 F272xB supports two 4-wire analog telephone lines 2 F272xB supports stereo audio 1.2 DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT The F272XB is a telephone modem providing two 4-wire telephone circuits, or stereo audio channels. It can be used to provide an intercom link, PA system, or other 4-wire analog service. It can also be used for two channels of mono audio. Simply, F272XB modems can accommodate two audio channels Functional Characteristics The F272XB converts two audio signals into equivalent digital signals. The aggregate signal, which includes both digitized analog signals is used to turn a light source on and off, generating a series of light pulses, which are sent through the fiber optic cable to the remote end. At the local unit the audio is filtered and sampled by an ADC then sent to the multiplexer optics. At the remote end the light pulses are recovered and the aggregate signal is demultiplexed. On the F272XB modem, the received signals are sent through a DAC and filtered Physical Characteristics The F272XB modem is shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2. There are three connectors for user input and output (See Figure 2). The DB9 connector (J4) for 4-wire Telephone input and 4

5 output or 1/8 TRS connectors (J6 & J7) for audio operation. Alternatively, the DB9 can be used to connect differential 1 audio signals. All input audio signals should be line-level. There are two connectors for power that are wired in parallel: Modular jack (J3) is used when the modem is in the standalone configuration; 12-pin connector (P1) is used when the modem is placed in the VERSITRON FOM II 20-slot chassis Model HF-20A or when used in the VERSITRON Versimux II 20 slot chassis Model VMX20. Chassis mounting options are shown in Table 1. 6 2 INSTALLATION 2.1 GENERAL This section contains detailed information on the installation and initial checkout of the F272xB Modem. Section 2.2 contains general information on site selection and mounting. Section 2.3 contains the description for selecting different options on the Modem. Sections 2.3 and 2.5 contain detailed instructions for connecting Model F272xB products to your system. Section 2.6 contains initial checkout procedures. 2.2 SITE SELECTION AND MOUNTING The Model F272xB products are designed to be used as an interface extender for 4-wire analog telephone lines, or stereo audio. When connecting the F272xB, the copper and fiber optic cable should be securely installed so as to prevent accidental disconnection. Care should be taken to ensure that the copper and fiber optic cables are not mechanically separated from the Modem during operation. When installed in either desktop chassis or in the dual-card rack-mount chassis, space for the power transformer must also be provided. When placed in a rack-mount configuration (HF-20A or VMX20) extra rack space must be provided for the AC300WR power supply/system monitor. 2.3 SWITCH AND JUMPER SETTINGS There is one switch and two jumpers provided for configuration of selectable options. Switch and jumper locations are shown in Figure Modem Configuration Settings There are no user selectable switch settings. 6

7 Figure 3: F272xB Switch and Jumper Locations 2.4 POWER REQUIREMENTS The F272xB products are designed to operate from an AC to DC power transformer or a DC power source in the range of +5 to +15 VDC Installation with AC Power Before inserting the VERSITRON power transformer, PSAC08 (US) or PSAC09 (EUR), into an AC power source, the plug should be connected to the Modem. There are no special tools required Installation with DC Power DC power may be used instead of a power transformer. This requires a 2.5 mm plug, J3 (location shown in Figure 2 and Figure 3) with the positive voltage on the center and the common on the concentric supplying 12VDC at 1.0A as shown below (Figure 4): 2.5 INTERFACE WIRING Figure 4: DC Power Supply Connection 7

8 Table 2 through Table 5 list the interface wiring for F272xB Modems. A DB9 connector is used as shown in Table 2. The interface wiring for the 1/8 TRS jacks are described in Table 3 and Table 4. When the 1/8 TRS connections are used the corresponding inputs/outputs on the DB9 interface are by-passed. The modular connector (J3) is wired in parallel with the 12- pin connector (P1) for power. When installing the modem in a standalone or dual-card rack-mount chassis, a power transformer is plugged into modular jack (J3). When installing the audio Modem in a 20-card rack-mount chassis (HF20A or VMX20) with optional power supply (AC300WR) the 12-pin connector (P1) is used. Wiring for the 12-pin connector is shown in Table 5. Figure 2 and Figure 3 identify the locations for the 12-pin power connector (P1) and modular power jack (J3). 9 After the electrical and digital interface cables have been wired according to sections 2.4 and 2.5, if the fiber optic SFP has not already been installed, insert the SFP module into the SFP cage (Z1) and attach the fiber optic cable to it (see Figure 2 and Figure 3 for location of Z1). The SFP module slides into the RFI Cage label side up. There will be a slight click when it locks into place. After the SFP module is installed the fiber optic cable can be installed. The cable must be an LC type connection. The cable should be oriented with the thumb tab at the top. When completely inserted the tabs will click into place. 2.6 INITIAL CHECKOUT PROCEDURE F272xB Modems contain no power on/off switch. Once power is connected the modem will go through its power-up sequence. When the Power LED (see Figure 1) is lit the modem is ready for use. Before beginning system operation check the following to verify proper installation: 1. Verify that the power plug is seated fully into the modem or the modem is seated fully in the rack-mount enclosure (HF20A). 2. Verify that the fiber optic cable is connected on each end. 3. Verify that the Alarm LED (see Figure 1) is not lit when the fiber optic cable is connected and the units, both local and remote, are powered. 10 3 OPERATION 3.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter contains a description of the operating controls and indicators associated with the F272xB Modems. Since the F272xB is designed for continuous and uninterrupted operation, there are no setting requirements after the unit is operational. Once the Modem is powered up it should remain in service as long as required. 3.2 STATUS INDICATORS There are 4 indicators on the F272xB: Power Status (Power), Alarm, CLPL, and CLPR (see Table 6 for descriptions). 11 4 THEORY OF OPERATION 4.1 INTRODUCTION The F272xB is an analog audio modem with fiber optic LC connectors. F272xB modems are designed to work in pairs and interface with voice or audio signals coming from the user equipment. These units are housed in VERSITRON S FOM II chassis: HF-1, HF-2SS, HF- 20A, or VMX20. Chassis descriptions are found in section POWER SUPPLY AND ALARM CIRCUITRY Power Supply Circuit The power supply circuit used in the F272xB modems is a switching supply. This unit receives 12VDC power at the input (either J3 or P1) and converts it to the needed voltages for the unit's operation Alarm Circuit The alarm indicator is activated when there is no valid signal received through the fiber optic interface. 4.3 FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION The unit consists of the following circuits: Analog to Digital Conversion FPGA (Mux/De-mux) Fiber optic Transceiver Circuit Analog to Digital Conversion An analog buffer and filter circuit is used before the A/D circuit. This signal is then digitized and band-limited for the digital system. On the receive path the digital data stream is reconstructed to an analog signal through a D/A circuit. The sample rate on the voice signal is 96kHz to ensure a high quality audio signal FPGA (Mux/De-mux) An FPGA is used to perform the MUX/DEMUX of sampled data as well as data synchronization functions. The FPGA was designed by VERSITRON and the VHDL code is proprietary to VERSITRON Fiber optic Transceiver Circuit Fiber optic communications are handled by the SFP module. The power for this module is isolated from the other power circuits through filters. This helps reduce the supply noise being coupled into the SFP module. The SFP interfaces to the FPGA through an adapter card. 11

12 5 MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING 5.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter contains general information designed to isolate a malfunction in the Model F272xB to a replaceable unit. These units are not equipped with redundancy. Therefore, a failure in one of these units will interrupt service. 5.2 FAULT ISOLATION The steps in Table 7 should be taken to check a non-operating modem. Contact VERSITRON Customer Service for additional diagnostic assistance or to arrange for repair as necessary.
