3 1 Features and application Custobloc - flow switches/ -guards were developed to monitor material flow in pneumatic conveying. Custobloc - flow switches/ -guards reliably detect a stop of the flow and supply information about start and stop of transportation processes, plugging and blow-by. The system can be customized to different applications with a great degree of flexibility. The user can carry out adjustments to the specific conveyance situation by setting parameters for: Amplification and Reaction time ( fast / slow response of the switch) (For adaption to particular conveying conditions and applications also the parameters threshold and number of impulses can be modified with assistance of the manufacturer.) Parameterization is carried out in discrete steps. By this method a set of parameters can easily be copied to other Custobloc - flow switches/ -guards in the same installation. The flow/stop information is available by means of a double throw dry contact. The relay s direction of action can be chosen depending on application specific requirements (see page 11 for details). 4 2 Installation of the devices Flange dimensions Custobloc - standard devices are build to be fitted in a conveying line between two recessed flanges according to DIN/EN 1092/1 Form F. With an optional adapter ring the use of spigot type counter flanges is also possible. 5 Installation position in the conveying line Custobloc flow switches/ -guards are designed for installation in vertical or horizontal segments of the line. Restrictions for vertical installation: When installing in a vertical segment of the line it is mandatory to choose a position close to the upper end of the vertical segment for installation. This can be the location directly below a transition from a segment of vertical pipe to a segment of horizontal pipe (of sufficient length). Only compliance with these rules can ensure that there is no nuisance trigger from material dropping back after a stop of conveying. Otherwise material dropping down in vertical lines with excessive vertical segment above the flow switch can delay or even render the switch impossible to detect a stop. The label on the measuring tube indicates the mounting orientation (not the direction of flow): arrow must always point upward Page 5

6 Electrical wiring Supply voltage for Custobloc flow switches/ -guards is 24VDC (±10%). Maximum power consumption is 4 Watts. The supply voltage is isolated from the device ground. Connections between the supply voltage ground and other ground potentials may only exist at the power supply. When installing several flow switches the supply voltage must be routed to the different flow switches individually, using a two conductor cable for each. Additional ground connections along the route from the power supply to the flow switch (e.g. inside electrical cabinets or wiring boxes) are not allowed. The conductor size of the supply cable must be chosen according to its length to prevent a higher than allowed voltage drop. 8 3 Control elements Operating controls of the Custobloc processing unit Parameterization of the Custobloc - processing unit is performed primarily by means of the two rotary switches equipped with red knobs. The relay s direction of action is selected with the DIP switch. Details of the different indicators and controls are described on the following pages. Page 8

9 4 Indicators at the processing unit LED Operation After startup the green Operation LED will flash three times and then remain lit continuously. A malfunction of the device can be easily detected by the Operation LED: In case of a problem it will go dark intermittently or stay dark permanently during operation. Level indicator Conveying generates a characteristic input signal in the Custobloc - flow switch/ -guard. The strength of this signal depends on transported material and other characteristics of conveying. The Level indicator (LED array with 5 LEDs) visualizes the current signal strength of the input signal after amplification. LED Trigger The yellow Trigger LED indicates a crossing of the threshold b y the input signal. The Trigger LED stays lit as long as the threshold is crossed continuously. LED Relay The yellow Relay LED indicates the relay status. The LED lights up whenever the relay is activated. This behavior is independent on the relay s chosen direction of action. Therefore the LED indicates either conveyance or stop of flow dependent on the adjusted operation mode (see also p.11). Page 9

10 5 Parameterization There are four multiple position switches (each with positions 0 to 9) and a DIP switch on the board. By means of these five switches the behaviour of the measuring electronics can be configurated. Amplification With the Amplification switch the amplification of the signal can be adjusted. The signal strength is visualized by the 5 LEDs of the level indicator. switch position amplification Page 10

11 Reaction time The minimal period of time the flow guard remains in one state (stop/ conveyance) is set by the switch Reaction time. Reaction time switch settings: Reaction time switch time period in seconds position 0 0, Relay s direction of action By the DIP switch can be selected whether the relay is energized or de-energized during conveying. This is configured with DIP switch 1. The yellow Relay LED always indicates when the relay is energized. The second DIP switch is unassigned and reserved for future expansions. 12 Threshold and number of impulses Flow detection is conducted by counting impulses. Each time the input signal crosses the threshold from below to above generates an impulse. Only when a certain number of impulses is exceeded within the selected time period the criterion for flow is met and the relay is actuated according to the selected direction of action. For standard switches the parameters Threshold and Impulses are preset to fixed values (Threshold switch to 3, Impulses switch to 4) As the user is not intended to make autonomous changes of these parameters there are no knobs installed on the corresponding switches. However, for particular applications a change of these parameters is possible after consulting the manufacturer. Page 12

13 6 Adjustment of the Custobloc - system to the conveying situation To adjust the Custobloc - system to different conveying situations the following steps have to be executed: Basic setting Check if all DIP - Switches are in position Off. If not, switch them to Off. Set the Reaction time switch to position 1. Adjustment of signal level Set Amplification switch during conveying to the position where 3 to 4 LEDs of the Level Indicator are lit permanently. Check of the threshold while conveying Watch the Trigger LED When the chosen amplification is sufficient the Trigger LED will light up continuously now Please notice that the Trigger LED always reacts immediately regardless of the selected reaction time for the relay! If conveying can not be interrupted due to operational reasons the next step can be skipped and the proper function of the Custobloc system should be checked later at the next stop of Page 13

14 Check of the threshold during stop of flow Now check if the Trigger LED stays dark when conveying stops. If not it may be necessary to set the amplification to next smaller value by means of the Amplification switch Restart conveying. Time response / Damping Adjust the Reaction time switch to the desired value. (refer to table on page 11) Relay s direction of action With the DIP switch 1 the direction of action for the relay can be set up. It can be selected whether the relay should be energized or deenergized during conveying. With this setting the failsafe-behavior in case of a power loss can be controlled. (refer to table on page 11) Page 14
