3 1 For your safety 1 For your safety 1.1 Authorised personnel All operations described in this operating instructions manual must be carried out only by trained specialist personnel authorised by the plant operator. During work on and with the device the required personal protective equipment must always be worn. 1.2 Appropriate use The antenna covers can be retrofitted to the radar sensors VE- GAPULS 68. They prevent from dust accumulating on the antenna system. 1.3 Warning about incorrect use Inappropriate or incorrect use of the instrument can give rise to application-specific hazards, e.g. vessel overfill or damage to system components through incorrect mounting or adjustment. 1.4 General safety instructions The safety information in the operating instructions manual of the respective sensor must be noted. 1.5 Safety instructions for Ex areas Please note the Ex-specific safety information for installation and operation in Ex areas. These safety instructions are part of the operating instructions manual and come with the Ex-approved instruments. 3

4 2 Product description 2 Product description Versions Antenna cover of plastic PP 2.1 Configuration The antenna covers are available in the following versions: Plastic (PP, PTFE) Textile (PTFE) The antenna cover of PP is a solid cap. It is mounted to the horn antenna by means of a tension band. Fig. 1: Antenna cover of PP for horn antenna Antenna cover of plastic PTFE The antenna cover of PTFE is a solid cap. It is screwed to the horn antenna by means of a retaining ring. These are retrofit parts for applications where no instrument with rinsing air connection can be used or where no rinsing air is available.

7 2 Product description An existing rinsing air connection can still be used because the PTFE textile is air permeable. Depending on the application, small air pulses are sufficient to remove the dust from the cover. Antenna cover of plastic PP Antenna cover of PTFE Antenna cover of PTFE textile The antenna cover of plastic PP is suitable for applications with extreme dust generation. The antenna cover of PTFE is particularly suitable for applications with strong buildup or condensation inside the horn antenna. Penetration of liquid or humidity into the inside of the antenna is prevented by two seals. Electrostatic charges are prevented by a contact ring between horn antenna and antenna cover. The antenna cover of PTFE textile is particularly suitable for applications with strong dust generation. Air movement during pneumatic filling and the flexible textile make the dust readily drop off. The silicone ring prevents dust from getting inside the antenna. 7

8 3 Mounting 3 Mounting 3.1 Mounting preparations The following tools are required for mounting, depending on the version: Hexagon socket wrench, size 4 Screwdriver 6 mm Sharp knife Version with plastic PP 3.2 Mounting steps, solid covers Proceed as follows: 1. Tighten tension band Version with plastic PTFE Proceed as follows: 1. Loosen the screws on the antenna base and remove antenna from the sensor 2. Slip O-ring seal, contact ring and retaining ring onto the antenna cone 8

Mount antenna cover onto the antenna opening and align the holes with the retaining ring 4. Tighten the screws crosswise until the antenna cover and retaining ring fit tightly together. 5. Insert flat seal between antenna and antenna base 6. Affix the antenna with the screws at the antenna base; torque max. 2.5 Nm (1.844 lbf ft) Antenna cover of PTFE textile with silicone ring 3.3 Mounting steps, flexible covers Proceed as follows: 1. Bend open the form seal and push it over the neck of the horn antenna 2. Push form seal up to the antenna flange 9

Pull the antenna cover over the antenna horn 4. Align the seam of the antenna cover 90 to the polarisation marking 5. Fold the antenna cover around the silicone ring 6. Open the tension band and pull it over the antenna cover on the silicone ring 7. Tighten the screw of the tension band until the antenna cover and the silicone ring fit together tightly Antenna cover of PTFE textile for flange Proceed as follows: 1. Pull the antenna cover over the antenna horn 2. 11 3 Mounting 3. Insert sensor with the antenna cover into the socket, the cover must encircle the vessel flange, the flange holes must align 4. Using a permanent marker, mark the openings in the flange collar of the antenna cover 5. Dismount the sensor, detach antenna cover and cut out the marked openings with a sharp knife 6. Insert the sensor with cover into the socket again, the cover must completely encircle the socket flange, the flange holes must align 7. Tighten the flange Antenna cover of PTFE textile, parabolic antenna Proceed as follows: 1. Pull the antenna cover over the silicone ring 3. Pull the tension band over the antenna cover 4. Tighten the screw of the tension band until the antenna cover and the silicone form seal fit together tightly 11

12 4 Setup 4 Setup Setup is carried out according to the operating instructions of VE- GAPULS 68. Keep in mind that the mounted antenna cover generates a small false echo in the close-up range. Information: For that reason we recommend (with all antenna covers) carrying out a false signal suppression in the close-up range up to 2 m or extending the existing false signal suppression. The procedure is described in the operating instructions manual of VEGAPULS
