2 Main Topics Standardization of OSLR Where are we at? What are we dealing with? The IETF. The future of OLSR Standards and Concepts.
3 Example: MANET WG (Mobile Ad hoc NETworks Working Group), is the WG in which OLSR standardization is taking place The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) The technical organization in charge of developing and maintaining Internet protocol standards Internet Drafts, RFC (Request for comments) Divided in different Working Groups (WG) specialized in various areas
4 The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) WGs are coordinated by a set of higher instances the WGs are grouped into Areas (like Routing) with ADs (Area Directors) that form the IESG (Internet Engineering Steering Group) the IAB (Internet Architecture Board) the IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) RFCs have to go through these instances
5 MANET WG Outcomes Dealt with a lot of proposals and techniques: proactive -- reactive -- hybrid -- OLSR, TBRPF AODV, DSR ZRP It seems the two prominent solutions are AODV (RFC 3561), and OLSR (RFC 3626) Each one solving the same specific problem: routing on ad-hoc networks
6 MANET WG Outcomes The IETF s higher instances mainly have 2 comments Why have different RFCs that solve the exact same problem? More generally, wouldn t it be possible to have a generic IP solution for seamless wired/wireless IP networks? The IETF/industry always prefers generic solutions
7 Envisioned Future Directions for MANET and OLSR Following these comments, the future efforts in the IETF will most likely be twofold: Convergence between AODV and OLSR to form a unique ad-hoc routing solution (inside MANET) Convergence between ad-hoc routing and usual wired routing to form a unique routing solution
8 MPRs would be used as a base on which both proactive and reactive approaches can build Convergence between AODV and OLSR Discussions have been going on for a while in view of such a convergence Talks about a protocol with common base and 2 modes vs further merge between the 2 approaches Most agreed on is the use of MPRs
9 Convergence between ad hoc OSPF & OLSR : both proactive, link state +OSPF designed for heterogeneous networks +OSPF scales with hierarchical routing +OSPF : arguably the most widely used IGP routing and usual routing Recently, efforts made in another direction merging ad-hoc routing and classical routing with OSPF and OLSR OLSR is noticeably very close to the classic routing protocol OSPF

11 OSPF on MANETs : problems If OSPF & OLSR are so close, why not simply use OSPF on MANETs? Main specific issues with OSPFv2 on MANETs Designated Router fails (hidden node problem) ACKs are a threat to functionality and performance with CSMA Area mobility: nodes with different configuration won t be neighbors Misc. other problems (DB Exchange, metrics)
12 MANET specific constraints ired network vs MANET Higher topology change rate Lower bandwidth Lower security Lower transmission quality (reliability, visibility) Energy constraints in addition for mobile nodes Even more problems with scaling
13 OSPF on MANETs : problems In general: OSPF overhead is too big Mathematical max. manageable number of neighbors we computed: 12 with OSPF 50 with OLSR (before saturation due to signaling on its own)
14 Wireless OSPF - ideas Use OLSR techniques to help OSPF span over MANETs too New OSPF extension : OSPF wireless interface main features: DR would be replaced by MPR New ACK mechanisms (span from none to some )
15 MPR vs DR Minimized flooding bandwidth cost (use of MPR) Minimized topology description (only MPR set) DR can be seen as a special case of MPR (except for DB Exchange)

Baker (Cisco Systems) proposed an Area Hand-Off for OSPFv3 Metrics - need for adapted metric on wireless links Security - still an issue on ad-hoc networks
17 Wireless OSPF in the IETF IETF efforts involving OSPF WG and MANET WG wireless OSPF drafts by» Boeing/INRIA» Cisco Both use MPRs Need for convergence to build a unique solution Available Implementations Implementation of the Boeing/INRIA draft
18 Conclusions OLSR has been standardized (RFC 3626) but it s not the end of OLSR derived standards The big winner concept as for now is the MPR technique that gained very big momentum along with OLSR A convergence between AODV and OLSR would be based on OLSR s MPR technique
19 Conclusions With a new extension designed for mobile adhoc networks and based on OLSR concepts including MPRs, OSPF has the potential to seamlessly unify wired & wireless IP networking under a unique routing solution OLSR and its derived standards and concepts are very well positioned with the continuous growth of industrial interest in mobile Internet, WiFi (802.11), and the developing of WiMax (802.16) and
