2 Prject Mtivatin: FarSunder 3D frward lking snar prducts feature a Transducer Mdule that bth transmits acustic energy and listens fr returning eches ver an array f acustic sensrs. The received acustic signals are digitized and prcessed t prduce a three dimensinal representatin f navigatin hazards in frnt f the vessel. Because the receiving elements are within a package affixed t a flating vessel that is cnstantly in mtin, the psitin f the Transducer Mdule, in particular its rll and pitch, needs t be measured s that the prcessed data can be displayed with apprpriate ge reference. The sensr that is currently used t measure rll and pitch is large enugh t require a munting bracket with assciated hardware and cabling, and als requires manual cnfiguratin. New technlgies fr multi-axis mtin sensing have been cming t the market as single chip devices that run n a few milliamps and take up negligible circuit bard real-estate. FarSunder wuld like t take advantage f these new, less expensive, and physically-smaller devices by having them sldered directly t the data acquisitin circuit bard. Anticipated Best Outcme: The gal f this prject is t design and test a slid state device that can be included n the data acquisitin circuit bard within the existing Transducer Mdule hardware package. This device will be capable f measuring rll and pitch with sufficient accuracy, precisin, and speed t reflect the cnditins during which the received snar signals are sampled. Page 2 f 5

3 Prject Details: System Engineering tasks include: Use FarSunder s existing rll/pitch measurement slutin t develp cmpnent requirements in cllabratin with FarSunder Identify update rate f existing sensr Identify accuracy f existing sensr Identify precisin f existing sensr Identify if preliminary cmpnents identified by FarSunder meet these requirements Identify alternate cmpnents that meet these requirements Identify tests t verify perfrmance metrics Identify ways t maximize system perfrmance Hardware tasks include: Obtain evaluatin mdules f prpsed cmpnents Crdinate a means f reading the utput f the evaluatin mdules Identify requirements t interface cmpnents with FarSunder data acquisitin system Interface evaluatin mdule with FarSunder specified DSP Design and fabricate a PCB with the prpsed cmpnents that will interface with the FarSunder data acquisitin system Firmware tasks include: Familiarize with SPI and I2C prtcls Establish cmmunicatin between device and DSP Establish methd f cnfiguring and retrieving data frm device Develp methd f verifying perfrmance and acceptability f cmpnent Page 3 f 5

5 Anticipated Best Outcme s Impact n Cmpany s Business, and Ecnmic Impact By remving a legacy device and hardware assembly, FarSunder s cre prduct will be easier t assemble and service while saving apprximately $1,000 in materials cst per system. Additinally, by using a newer sensr prduct, the risk f cmpnent bslescence will be reduced. This new slutin is the first step in making it pssible t design new prducts that demand smaller physical sizes, ultimately leading t new market pprtunities. By lwering cst and reducing hardware size, FarSunder envisins a wider line f prducts with price/perfrmance pints suitable fr all vessels utilizing a radar. With existing prducts detecting navigatin hazards as far as 1,000 meters away, it is critical that the sensrs used have an accurate reference n which t base the data.
