Chapter 1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Marine Wireless Navigation Server. You ve taken the first step towards being able to access your navigation information from anywhere on your boat!

3 Chapter 1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Marine Wireless Navigation Server. You ve taken the first step towards being able to access your navigation information from anywhere on your boat! This manual will give you detailed information on how to install and operate the Marine Wireless Navigation Server. We hope you have many successful voyages and enjoy the benefits of wireless navigation. We are always interested to hear about our customers experiences, so please send your stories or feedback to us via the support page on our website: Getting to Know Your Navigation Server Antenna Connections: Connect the included antenna (shown below) to Ant 1. You can use Ant 2 to extend the range (if necessary) with a secondary antenna. 2

4 Power LED: This light indicates when the Server is turned on. Error LED: This light flashes 3 times approximately 1 minute and 45 seconds after the unit is powered on, indicating it is fully operational. This light also indicates when there is an error, such as when your navigation software attempts to send navigation data at a rate faster than the NMEA data rate (usually 4800bps). Ethernet Connections: If you have a DSL or other internet connection when your boat is at the dock, you can plug it into Eth 0 to make your internet connection available wirelessly. Note: the internet connection must support DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) so that the Navigation Server can obtain an IP address. Eth 1 is reserved for customized Marine Wireless servers and is generally not used. Serial Connection: Connect your single NMEA device or multiplexer to the Server using a serial cable. Power Connection: Use the supplied connector to plug the Navigation Server into your boat s 12 or 24V electrical system. How It All Works The diagram below shows how the Navigation Server makes your navigation data available to your notebook, PDA, or other wireless device. Most autopilot, GPS, speed, and other navigation instruments support NMEA (NMEA stands for National Marine Electronics Association. You can find out more about NMEA at An NMEA multiplexer lets the Navigation Server get data input from multiple devices. The multiplexer is connected to the Navigation Server using a serial cable. The Navigation Server then broadcasts your navigation information wirelessly to your notebooks and handhelds. You may have multiple devices simultaneously receiving navigation data; however, you must insure that one (and only one) wireless device is sending data (such as controlling the autopilot). 3

7 Chapter 3 Basic Operation This chapter contains information to help you power, boot and connect to the Navigation Server. Installing the Server On your vessel, find a place to locate the Server that is secure, dry, and within 10 feet of your NMEA multiplexer. You can attach the Server using adhesive angle brackets, bungee cord, or some other means to keep it secure while underway. The Server can be mounted either horizontal or vertically on a bulkhead, shelf, or inside a cabinet. Powering the Server The navigation Server is designed to operate off of 12 or 24 volt DC power such as a boat battery. Note that the unit requires at least 11.2V DC to operate properly. If you have a bad or heavily discharged battery, the unit will begin to reboot sporadically once the voltage drops below 11.2V DC. If you have never done any marine or electrical wiring work, we recommend you find a marine electrician to help you wire the connector to the vessel s house batteries via the main electrical panel. Wire the included connector (shown below) into the boat s electrical system. Connect (solder with heat shrink tubing) the wire with the black tab to the boat s negative/ground (-) DC connection and the non-tabbed wire to the boat s positive (+) DC connection. Once you have the connector wired in, use a volt meter on the head of the connector to insure you have a clean connection without a noticeable voltage drop. If the Marine Wireless Server eventually begins rebooting sporadically, the most likely cause is corrosion in the wiring. We also recommend that you wire in a 2 Amp (e.g. AGC-2) fuse in the circuit. 6
