Model ATS-350 Operation Manual Page 4 of 13 Introduction & Equipment Description The TCI Model ATS-350 is designed to functionally test and display the output of Altitude Reporting Equipment, which conform to the ICAO Standard for SSR Pressure Altitude Transmission. In accordance with the U.S. National Standards for I.F.F. Mark X (SIF)/Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System SIF/ATCRBS. Devices conforming to these standards are generally approved and conform to FAA TSO-C88a and EASA ETSO-C88a. Also reference SAE AS8003. The ATS-350 utilizes an advanced RISC microprocessor to decode and display the output of these devices in both numeric and binary forms, with an input altitude data range of 1100 to +62,700 feet. Numeric altitude data is displayed on bright seven-segment LED displays while the individual ICAO binary data bit status is displayed on individual LED displays. The ATS-350 input is diode isolated to prevent the test set from interfering with other systems connected to the Altitude encoder. The ATS-350 incorporates a relay output triggered at either 100-foot or 1000-foot altitude code transitions. This output trigger point may be controlled via the front panel slide switch labeled RELAY. Both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) relay contacts are provided via the front panel mini-din connector. In addition to the altitude signal relay, an audible signal may be triggered at each 1000-foot or 100-foot transition point. This signal may be controlled via the front panel switch labeled Horn. 5 Trans-Cal Industries, Inc. Model ATS-350 Operation Manual Page 5 of 13 Section 2.0 Operation The ATS-350 may be utilized in the aircraft or on the bench to test ICAO pressure altitude encoders. The ATS-350 is not designed for wet locations and liquids entering the device will damage the unit. 2.1 Testing an Existing Altitude Encoder in the Aircraft 1. Verify the power supplied to the transponder and altitude encoder is off. 2. Connect a pressure controller or equivalent to the altitude encoder s static port. 3. The ATS-350 will consume another 100mA from the encoder power circuit in the aircraft. Verify that the fuse or circuit breaker will allow the additional current prior to using the ATS Slide the ATS-350 PWR switch to the O off position. 5. Disconnect the Altitude Encoder s electrical harness and connect it into the ATS-350 XSPONDER/POWER connector. Caution: Verify the pin assignments listed in 3.0 match the encoder/transponder wiring harness. CAUTION! VERIFY THAT POWER IS APPLIED TO THE CORRECT ALTITUDE ENCODER CONNECTOR PIN! FAILURE TO DO SO MAY DAMAGE THE ALTITUDE ENCODER! 6. Connect the Altitude Encoder wiring harness (TCI P/N: ) between the Altitude Encoder and ALT. ENCODER connector of the ATS-350. The connector pin assignments are listed in Verify the ATS-350 STROBE switch is in the l on position. 8. Apply power to the Transponder and Altitude Encoder. 9. Slide the ATS-350 PWR switch to the I on position. After applying power, the ICAO altitude data should be presented on the blue LED displays while the numeric equivalent is presented on the sevensegment numeric displays. 10. Apply vacuum or pressure as required to verify the operation of the unit under test, and observe the Altitude Encoder s output on the ATS-350.

6 Trans-Cal Industries, Inc. Model ATS-350 Operation Manual Page 6 of Testing an Altitude Encoder on the Bench 1. Turn the ATS-350 Power switch to the O off position. 2. Verify the power is in the off condition; connect TCI ATS-350 Power Supply (P/N:110205) to an AC wall outlet and the D-Sub connector to the XSPONDER/POWER connector. The TCI power supply is capable of providing 400mA of dc current. Verify the altitude encoder does not exceed the rated dc current. Alternatively, you may connect a +12 to +28Vdc power source to the XSPONDER/POWER connector on the ATS-350. This power supply should be capable of providing 100mA above the encoder dc current requirement. Use the connector data in 3.0 to construct a wiring harness. 3. Connect a pressure controller or equal to the static port of the Altitude encoder under test. 4. Connect the altitude encoder to the ALT. ENCODER connector on the ATS-350 using wiring harness TCI P/N: or equal. CAUTION! VERIFY THAT POWER IS APPLIED TO THE CORRECT ALTITUDE ENCODER CONNECTOR PIN! FAILURE TO DO SO MAY DAMAGE THE ALTITUDE ENCODER! 5. Apply power to the ATS-350 and Altitude Encoder. Slide the ATS- 350 PWR switch to the l on position. 6. After applying power, the ICAO altitude data should be presented on the blue LED displays while the numeric equivalent is presented on the seven-segment numeric displays. 7. Apply vacuum or pressure as required to verify the operation of the unit under test.

Model ATS-350 Operation Manual Page 7 of Relay Signal Operation The ATS-350 will trigger a relay and audible signal when either ascending or descending at every thousand-foot or every 100-foot ICAO code transition throughout the operating range. Both normally open (NO) and normally closed (NC) relay contacts are provided. This function is controlled via the front panel slide switch, and the operating characteristics are described below. Relay 100 When the relay front panel switch is in the 100 position the ATS-350 will trigger the relay on and the horn will sound for 250ms every time the ICAO altitude input changes. Relay 1K When the relay front panel switch is in the 1K position the ATS-350 will trigger and hold the relay in the on position as long as the input ICAO altitude code remains on that 1000-foot increment. It will trigger off when the input ICAO altitude code changes from that increment. Figure 1 The ICAO altitude code provides pressure altitude in 100-foot increments. The Nominal Transition Point of the ICAO altitude code is 50 feet prior to each 100-foot increment. e.g. The nominal transition point when ascending from 900 to 1000-feet is at 950-feet.This is the point at which the altitude encoder should transition from 900 to 1000-feet. The nominal transition point when descending from 1100 to 1000-feet is at 1050-feet.

8 Trans-Cal Industries, Inc. Model ATS-350 Operation Manual Page 8 of Strobe or Signal Common Test In normal operation the strobe switch should be in the On I position. The Strobe, sometimes labeled signal common, is simply an electrical connection to ground that is broken when the switch is moved to the O position. To test this function on the encoder move the strobe switch from I to O, the ATS-350 display will read feet. If the encoder display does not change then some fault in the wiring harness or the encoder is to be suspected. Most ICAO altitude outputs are uncommitted collectors of a transistor array. The emitters of these transistors are typically all tied together at the strobe pin. (Pin 6 on TCI encoders.) When ground is removed, the ICAO outputs will go to an Off state equal to the applied pull-up voltage.

This supply operates on VAC 50-60Hz and will supply up to 15Vdc at 400mA. The mating 15-Pin D-Subminiature connector should be connected to the Xsponder/Power connector. Should replacement or repair of the mating connector or power supply be required, connect as per the following table. Do NOT send this unit to a distributor or retailer for repair. Contact the factory directly if you experience problems (818) This warranty applies to the original purchaser of the instrument. Trans-Cal s obligation under this warranty is limited to repairing or replacing any unit returned to Trans-Cal during the life of this warranty provided: (1) The defective unit is returned to Trans-Cal, transportation pre-paid. (2) Prior approval is obtained from Trans-Cal. (3) The unit has not been damaged by misuse, neglect, improper operation, accident, alteration or improper installation. Trans-Cal DOES NOT reimburse labor costs on warranty repairs. Trans-Cal Industries will be the sole judge as to the cause of the malfunction and wherein the responsibility lies.
